Hoffmann (Dr. Heinrich). The English Struwwelpeter or, Pretty Stories and Funny Pictures for Little Children. After the sixth edition of the Celebrated German work of Dr. H. Hoffmann, 1st edition in English, Leipzig: Friedrich Volckmar, 1848, hand-coloured line illustrations throughout, occasional spotting and toning, original printed boards with faint round ink stamp to upper board, detached and spine torn with loss, light spotting, board edges rubbed and some wear, slim 4to This children's classic was first published in German in 1847, and editions translated into other languages soon followed. The first English edition is scarce and few copies have survived in their original printed board binding, on which the date of publication appears. (1)
Miniature book. Petit Souvenir Journalier 1870, Paris, [1870], almanack printed in blue, a number of leaves torn out, some manuscript notes in pencil at front and rear, mentioning Watersmeet and Lynton in Devon, burgundy moirÚ silk endpapers, incorporating pocket at front and pencil loop at rear, rear pastedown with gilt stamp of Auguste Klein, Rue des Capucines, original engraved brass-edged binding, lightly rubbed, front cover with silver-plated relief of a courting couple in 17th century dress, rear cover of brown morocco, brass clasp, 80 x 60mm (3.25 x 2.25ins) Auguste Klein of Vienna had a shop on the Boulevard des Capucines in Paris, one of the Grand Boulevards which formed the Golden Triangle with Boulevard des Italiens and Rue de la Paix. This area of Paris, with its hotels and shops, was at the centre of fashionable society, and people flocked to shops such as Klein's prestigious establishment with its extraordinary array of wares. Apparently, in 1868, the Boulevard des Capucines was traversed by 23,000 horses daily. Auguste Klein was part of the Aesthetic Movement, and his pieces are both uncommon and sought after. (1)

Three lavender bag dolls, circa 1900, three dolls composed of fabric and card, two in gauze dresses trimmed with ribbon and lace, with lavender in the bottom of the skirts, the other in a tail coat and bow tie, with lavender in the legs, dusty and some wear (card hand missing on one of the female dolls), together with a set of Russian wooden skittles, circa 1930s, seven (of 8?) plus king pin, painted predominantly in red and green, rubbed, king pin with ink stamp on base 'Made in Soviet Union', height 14cm/5.5ins (king pin 15.5cm/6ins), plus fifteen National Costume advertising figures, circa 1930s, colour-printed wooden figures, with six slotted wooden stands, each illustrating the national costume of a country (e.g. 'Rumania', 'Yugo-Slavia', 'Iceland', 'Czecho-Slovakia'), 'Germany' with costume illustration removed (during WWII?), printed on verso "Farmers' Glory" and with the country name and statistics, height 9cm (3.5ins) A collection of somewhat disparate but unusual juvenilia. The wooden figures were given away with Farmers' Glory Wheat Flakes, and there were apparently 36 to be collected in total. (3)

A collection of Oriental games, late 19th/early 20th century, comprising: The Game of "Hana-Awase" Japanese Cards, Tokyo, Japan: printed by the Seishi-Bunsha, 1892, numerous colour woodblock illustrations (some lightly offset), original wrappers, decorative colour front cover, 8vo; a wooden Chinese games box, subdivided into compartments, containing two smaller wooden boxes with sliding lids, one holding 'Go' stones, the other holding decorated and lettered bone counters, plus a set of six shallow baskets, and a pair of stacking wooden trays (one lidded), one holding two sets of Hanafuda cards, the other holding a set of cards for an unknown game, with additional folded cards and a text booklet; a lacquered box with decorative lid, containing approximately four sets of Hanafuda cards, with handwritten instructions and a typed sheet 'Rule for 1915'; a card box containing two Hanafuda sets, one unopened and with 'Nintendo Card Co.' stamp on base; another pair of probaby Hanafuda card sets, both unopened, with Japanese 10 sen stamp sealing each end of both packs, contained in wooden box; and a set of Chinese fortune sticks with instruction booklet, contained in cylindrical gilt-decorated case (6)

A young faun and a cat chasing two butterflies, 1917, black paper scissor cut silhouette, with the butterflies drawn in ink, mount card lightly toned, image size 9 x 16cm (3.5 x 6.25ins), sheet size 23.5 x 28cm (9.25 x 11ins), framed and glazed, together with Schonberg (Eva, early 20th century), A small girl being offered cherries by an older girl carrying a basket, black paper scissor cut silhouette, incorporating coloured fabrics, some light brown stains, and one or two breaks, artist's open scissor blind stamp lower right, sheet size 25 x 19cm (10 x 7.5ins), oval frame, glazed, plus another silhouette by Eva Schonberg similar, of a young girl with a parasol, holding a tiny dog on a lead, some small breaks, backing card toned, artist's open scissor blind stamp lower right just faintly visible, sheet size 26.5 x 20cm (10.5 x 7.75ins), framed and glazed, and Kaskeline (Friedrich, born 1863) A landscape with poplar tress and a figure on a bridge, black paper scissor cut oval silhouette, artist's blind stamp lower right, 26 x 20.5cm (10.25 x 8ins), framed and glazed, plus eight other black paper scissor cut silhouettes, various sizes, mostly of children and animals, two with signatures: 'B. Ulricksen' and 'H. Brenssong [19]36', all framed and glazed Danish artist Else Hasselriis illustrated a number of books with silhouette designs, including: Shen of the Sea, a Book for Children, by Arthur Bowie Chrisman, 1925; The Wind that Wouldn't Blow, by Arthur Bowie Chrisman, [1927]; 'H.C. Andersens Eventyr', 1929; and 'The Nutcracker of Nuremberg, by Alexandre Dumas, 1930. She is also known to have painted pottery. German artist Eva Schonberg was one of the most prolific cutwork artists working in Berlin in the 1920s and 30s. Friedrich Kaskeline studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under the history and portrait painter Christian Griepenkerl. He subsequently worked chiefly as an illustrator of magazines, journals and postcards, as well as working in commerce and producing propaganda graphics during the First World War. (11)

Hardy (Thomas). The Woodlanders, 3 volumes, 1st edition, London: Macmillan and Co., 1887, half-titles, without advertisements as issued, some spotting to half-titles and free endpapers, volume 1 front free endpaper with embossed W.H. Smith & Son library stamp, most hinges cracked, original dark green pebble-grained cloth (secondary binding), gilt blocked to spine and single-rule border with inner frame in black to upper boards, some light mottling, extremities worn, 8vo Purdy, pages 54-57. Originally published in monthly installments, Hardy sometimes mentioned The Woodlanders as being his favourite (and best) of his own novels. The first edition comprised 1000 copies, of which 860 were initially bound, with the remainder bound up in dark green pebbled cloth, blocked in black on the front and in blind on the back with a single-rule border and inner frame with square corners (as here). Purdy states that this secondary, less common, binding is never found on ex-library copies, making this a very unusual example. (3)
