The partially printed document being a certificate, bearing a large heading "Cardinalis Joachimus Pecci", given to Anselmus Anselmi. Signed by Leo XIII in his capacity as Archbishop of Perugia. Folded to the centre. With a blind embossed seal to the front left lower corner and two watermarks, one showing a bird. Showing to the verso a contemporary annotation alongside a Curia Citta di Castello ink stamp. Very small overall age wear, otherwise VG £150-200

Hesse states `I was pleased that you thought of me in Vienna, and that you sent me your nice and noteworthy novel. Thank you. I send you enclosed something new too, I think of you and your homeland..´. Bearing to the bottom left corner an Austrian ink stamp. Together with T.L., to a small 8vo card, bearing a printed landscape colour drawing by Hesse entitled “Dorf im Tessin” above the typed text `Mr. Hesse has been ill for a long time, he is at Baden right now, and will be back shortly.´ Post-stamped and postmarked to the verso, Zurich, April 1942. Main executive leader of the Directory regime 1795-99; François Louis Bourdon (1758-1798), known as Bourdon de l´Oise, French Procureur at the Parlment of Paris, arrested and deported to French Guiana; Jacques-Antoine Boudin (1756-1797); Louis-Alexandre Vardon (1751-1809); Stanislas Joseph Rovere (1748-1798) and Charles Jean-Baptiste Dobiche de Lomont (1748-1829). The partially printed document bears the printed heading of the National Convention, Committee of General Security, beneath a large ink stamp of same committee., stating that `The Committee has approved that citizen François Pierre Valentin who was arrested at the communal house of Caen, will be immediately released and that all seals affixed on his belongings and documents removed. The National agent of the Caen district will be in charge of executing the present order.´ The document bears a Committee of General Security paper seal affixed to the lower left corner. To the lower right corner bearing a small stamp of the Earl of Crawford collection. To the verso showing a list of the Convention members signing the present document, written in a collector´s hand. Very small overall minor age wear, otherwise G £250-350

[FARSISTAN - ISFAHAN]: Unusual original autograph document, one page, 4to, Yazd, dated 28th July 1298 according to Arabic calendar, [1881], in Arabic. The document, being a telegram and bearing an attractive lion with saber to the heading, is a medical report sent by the doctor of the town of Yazd, stating in part `Typhus increases or diminishes according to increases or decreases of temperature…Children´s diarrheas and conjunctivitis have reached the status of epidemic…´ further saying `Before yesterday, four children of four, five and six years old, who ate raisins which were since long stored at home and mixed with roots of a narcotic and poison plant, became mad, not keeping any kind of trace of their reason..´ Also bearing an ink stamp at the base of the text. Accompanied by a translation into French. Small hole to the centre fold, although repaired to the verso, otherwise about G £80-100

RUSHDIE SALMAN: (1947- ) British Indian Novelist & Essayist. An interesting A.L.S., Salman Rushdie, three pages, 8vo, Fernshaw Road, London (the premises of his literacy agency, Wylie, Aitken & Stone), 2nd November 1992, to Ernst Reinhard Piper. Rushdie thanks his correspondent for their help 'in Artikel 19 Verlag' and at the Frankfurt Bookfair and 'also for your expressions of solidarity and hope for the future', continuing 'As it turned out, it was probably a mistake to have moved to Kiepenheuer [& Witsch, the German publishing house] with The Satanic Verses; but that is what I was advised at the time, and there is no point in trying to rewrite the past'. Rushdie also apologises to Piper for his decision, realising that he was hurt by it, and remarks 'But, as of course you know, writers (and publishers) make such choices - good ones, bad ones - all the time'. The novelist concludes his letter writing 'At any rate, I am truly grateful for your selfless support, and hope we may meet again soon. In the meanwhile, the storm continues - now, as you may have seen, in Germany also. It is a long, tough fight, but it must be won'. With the publisher's ink received stamp dated 9th November 1992 to a clear area at the head of the first page. A letter of significant content. VG £1200-2000Ernst Reinhard Piper (1952- ) German Historian who joined his father's publishing house in 1982.The German edition of The Satanic Verses was published by Artikel 19 Verlag in 1989; the publishers created specifically to protect them from the fatwa issued against Rushdie, Article 19 relating to the freedom of expression included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.The 1981 Booker Prize winning Rushdie's work combines magical realism with historical fiction and much of his work is set on the Indian subcontinent. His fourth novel, The Satanic Verses, was the subject of a major controversy which resulted in the British government placing the author under police protection. In 2008 The Times ranked Rushdie thirteenth on its list of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945.

A.L.S., `Theodore Dreiser´, two pages, on separate sheets, small 4to, yellow paper, New York, 26th March 1919, on his personal stationery, 165 west 10 Street. Dreiser states in part `I have the feeling that they will not pay the 500$. In that case the book will be published in book form June 2nd and I shall be privileged to dispose of the dramatic rights as I may.´ The letter bears to the heading an “answered” ink stamp dated 29th March 1919. BAUDELAIRE CHARLES: (1821-1868) French Poet, a pioneering translator of Edgar Allan Poe. A.N.S., signed twice `Charles Baudelaire´ and `C.B´, one page, 4to, n.p. [Paris], 15th August 1858, in French. By this document Baudelaire authorizes M. Cousinet to `be paid on my behalf the sum of five hundred francs being the price of my articles for the "Revue Contemporaine"; This delegation is issued to be substituted by a bill of exchange to the bearer, for the same sum, and due date of 15th August 1858.´ Beneath his signature Baudelaire adds `Will have to be paid on top the charges and interest from 15th August 1858´ and signs with his initials `C.B´. One ink stamp validating the document to the upper left front. Together with D.S., two pages, 4to, the partially printed document being a citation for Baudelaire, calling him for a conciliation before justice, stating `To sentence the mentioned Mr. Charles Baudelaire to pay the amount of six hundred francs..´ Small overall age wear, mostly to edges and few pinholes not affecting the signatures. VG £2000-3000 Louis Cousinet was a Restaurateur at the Tour d´Argent in Paris. Baudelaire used to eat at his restaurant, often with friends and without money to pay his bills.

LORRAIN JEAN: (1855-1906) His real name being Paul Alexandre Duval. French Poet of the Belle Epoque, associated to the Symbolist school. Lorrain was openly gay and became known as “The Ambassador from Sodom”. A very good A.L.S., Jean Lorrain, four pages, 8vo, 19 Quai Voltraire, Paris, 29th October [1903], [to Jules Claretie], in French. Lorrain thanks his correspondent for the great evening at the theatre, stating in part `Les Affaires sont les Affaires is really the best playwright I have seen at the theatre for the last 10 years…´ further regretting that `..misunderstandings poisoned by colleagues have put distance between Octave Mirabeau and myself and are forbidding me to congratulate his fine work. I would be happy if he could learn the deep impression I had yesterday listening to him..´ and before concluding states `Mirabeau, in three acts, has given revenge to all of us against the ferocity of the capital and the rascality of businessmen.´ Bearing to the verso an ink stamp of Collection Debauve. Manet strongly wishes to collect back some sketches and explains to his correspondent `Although I do not care about my sketches more than what they deserve, I think it would be a polite gesture if these gentlemen return them to me the earliest..´ Bearing a Blémont Foundation collection ink stamp. RAINIER III OF MONACO: (1923-2005) Sovereign Prince of Monaco 1949-2005. An excellent A.L.S., Rainier Prince of Monaco, one page, 8vo, blue paper, Monaco, 24th April 1981, on his printed stationery, bearing a crowned Rs to the heading, in French. Rainier thanks his correspondent for his letter and congratulations and states in part `..the Princess and I were very touched by your thoughts on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of our marriage.´ further saying `The Princess and I were delighted to receive you at the Palace when you visited the Principality, and we hope you will come again in the near future. Monaco is not the end of the world, even if it is a little world apart, where people appreciate culture, the arts and joie de vivre!´ Accompanied by the original envelope bearing an ink stamp of the Prince´s private post. MAMONTOV SAVVA: (1841-1918) Russian Industrialist and Patron of the Arts. A good set of three A.L.S., `Sawa Manontoff´, two of four pages each and one of two pages, 8vo, October to December 1907, to Albert Carré, in French. The letters bear to the upper left corner an ink stamp saying “Sawa Mamontoff - Moscou´. Mamontoff responds to his correspondent´s questions, as per Rimsky-Korsakov´s recommendation, related to the mise en scene and costumes of Snegourochka (`The Snowmaiden´), 1882, and states in part `You want to make the Russian opera known in France, and you have chosen Snegourotschka of Rimsky Korsakoff. Also the Great opera Sadko. I have been honoured to take in charge the premiere of the two works at the private Opera theatre in Moscow. Considering the poetry and charm I prefer Snegourotschka because the text and topic is by our great poet Ostrowsky…´ Mamontov refers on multiple occasions to Rimsky-Korsakov, his operas and mises en scene on these lengthy and of very interesting content letters. Together with an A.L., in the hand of Rimsky-Korsakov´s secretary, two pages, 8vo, St. Petersburg, 17th October 1907, to Albert Carré, in French. Rimsky-Korsakov forwards Mamontoff´s address and recommends his correspondent to contact him regarding the mise en scene and costumes of his opera Snegourochka. Also including a set of four A.Ls.S., `Halperine´, three pages each, one 8vo and three 4to, St. Petersburg, November 1907, to Albert Carré, in French. The three letters report on Rimsky-Korsakov´s opera, and refer also to the Opera Comique of Paris, to Diaguileff who is in charge of the mise en scene proposal, etc… A full set of eight letters of very interesting musical content. VG £200-300 Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) Russian Composer, a member of the Five Group. Albert Carré (1852-1938) French Theatre and opera Director. For over 50 years Albert Carré was the most prominent figure in the theatrical and musical life of Paris.

LEONCAVALLO RUGGIERO: (1857-1919) Italian Composer. A good A.L.S., R.Leoncavallo, one page, small 8vo, Paris, 10th November 1908, to Mr. J. Croze, to a French Carte Pneumatique post letter, in French. Leoncavallo thanks his correspondent for the information forwarded and states in part `Monsieur, thank you for opening my eyes regarding the person referred to, who I will hasten to sack him tomorrow…I will wait for you at my hotel (Hotel Montana, 11 rue de l´echelle´ Addressed to the verso in Leoncavallo´s hand, bearing several ink stamps and a post-stamp. Folded. G £100-150

CESPEDES DEL CASTILLO CARLOS MANUEL: (1819-1874) Cuban Revolutionary. Known as the "Father of the Motherland", Cespedes is considered a Cuban hero who freed slaves and leaded the declaration of Cuban Independence in 1868. An attractive signed printed document, one page, folio, Bayamo, 27th December 1868, in Spanish. The document being a decree is entitled "Slavery Conditioned Abolition Decree - Carlos Manuel de Cespedes - Captain-General of the Liberator Army of Cuba and Leader of the Provisional Government", and bears a very attractive and large vignette to the heading. The decree contains nine articles, and starts stating `The Cuban Revolution, proclaiming the independence of the Homeland and with it all freedoms, cannot accept the inconsistency of restricting it to only one part of the country´s population. A free Cuba is incompatible with a proslavery Cuba..´ further saying in its first article `All slaves are declared free..´. Boldly signed by Cespedes at the base of the document `C. M Cespedes´. Bearing a large blind embossed seal to the head and an ink stamp of the "Ilustre Ayuntamiento Libre de Bayamo" at the base. The document grants freedom to `Nemesio, apprentice, 16 years old, black..´ Overall age wear, with edges slightly trimmed, tear and small areas of paper loss. F £400-600

LECLERC DE HAUTECLOCQUE PHILIPPE: (1902-1947) French General during WWII. Appointed Marshal of France posthumously. Leclerc was killed in an air crash in Algeria. In May 1945 he was given command of the French Far East Expeditionary Corps. He represented France at the surrender of Japan. T.L.S., `Le Clerc´, one page, 4to, Saigon, 14th November 1945, in French. Leclerc arrived in Saigon with a first contingent of French soldiers a month earlier, on 5th October 1945. The document bears the typed heading "Head Commandment of the French Troops in the Far East - The General Leclerc", and reports on Lieutenant Poydenot satisfactory services. Signed at the base by Leclerc over an attractive ink stamp stating "Le General - Corps Expeditionnaire Extreme Orient". Together with D.S., on behalf of General Leclerc, by Lieutenant Colonel, three pages, 4to, in French. The partially typed document being the memory of Lieutenant Poydenot, with lengthy written reports, stating in part `..despite the very hard war conditions he created an organization which has worked perfectly…wounded in September 1945, in Saigon..´ Small overall age wear. STALIN JOSEPH: (1878-1953) Soviet Dictator. Leader of the Soviet Union as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party 1922-52. Rare A.N.S., `No objection. I. St[alin]´, in red pencil, to the head of a T.L.S., `P. Moskatov´, in blue pencil and in Cyrillic, one page, 4to, Moscow, 11th April 1942, to `Tovarich Stalin I. V.´, in Cyrillic. The war-time document bears a red ink stamp to the head stating `Top Secret´, the printed monogramme with Soviet hammer and sickle, and the printed heading of “Workforce Accounting and Distribution Committee at the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR”. Moskatov states `According to the Resolution nº434, the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR allowed the Committee and the Executive Committee of Molotovsky region (tovarisch Goryunov), to mobilize, within two weeks, and for the period of wartime, 150 women from working-age inactive population in the Berezniky city, Molotovsky region, in order that they would work at the Berezovskaya thermoelectric plant..´ With two binder holes to the left border not affecting the text or signature. Very small overall creasing, otherwise VG £2500-3500Piotr G. Mostakov (1894-1969) Chief of labour reserves 1940-46 in the USSR Council, and Chairman of the auditing commission of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union 1952-60. Three times awarded with the Lenin Order.

CLERGUE LUCIEN: (1934-2015) French Photographer. Chairman of the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. An excellent original silver print 9.5 x 12 photograph, signed to the verso, the image showing a naked woman body. The photograph bears to the verso several annotations in Clergue´s hand, including the photograph title `Nu de la Foret, Les Lions (Var) 1973, tirage 1973, Lucien Clergue´, annotated in pencil in 1973, also signed above in bold black ink `Tirage d´époque - Lucien Clergue´, and a further signature confirming authenticity `2012 by Lucien Clergue´. To the verso, bearing also an ink stamp of Clergue´s photography studio “Photographie by Lucien Clergue - Arles”. Extremely small age wear traces to the upper edge. VG £500-800

LAKANAL JOSEPH: (1762-1845) French Politician. Member of the National Convention 1792-95. He voted for the execution of King Louis XVI. Lakanal is well remembered when, as President of the Education Committee, he introduced many important changes in the French educational system. Rare A.L.S., `Lakanal - from the Institut of France - Doctor in Sciences and Literature´, three pages, 4to, Magny, n.d., [1808], to Monsieur Le Rat de Magnetot, prefect of Andelys, Eure, in French. A lengthy and interesting letter full of complaints and reproaches to his correspondent´s behaviour, stating in part `..I am seated on the last step.. comfortably.. I have been assured that during your one before last trip to Paris, you have been intriguing talking to a half-god of the Jour, in order to leave me standing and uncomfortable…´ further saying that such comments do not match with his correspondent´s kind messages, making a parallelism with Cyrano-Bergerac, and stating `..It is easy to raise up your soul, high enough so such abject slanders cannot reach you.. Isn´t it useful that larvae exist? Nightingales eat them and sing even better: I do not sing, and have never crawled..´ With address leaf in Lakanal´s hand to the fourth page with a small area of paper loss due to the opening of the letter, also bearing an ink post stamp and remnants of a former red seal. Very small overall, minor age wear and creasing, otherwise G £600-900 In 1815, after the battle of Waterloo, Lakanal went into exile to the United States. He became a planter in Alabama, owning slaves, and was appointed president of the University of Luisiana which he reorganized, today know as Tulane University.

COCHON DE LAPPARENT CHARLES: (1750-1825) French Politician and Minister of Police. Member of the National Convention and of the Committee of Public Health. Cochon de Lapparent was one of the Commissars in charge of the King´s indictment, voting in favour of the King´s execution. An excellent and rare A.L.S., `Cochon´, four pages, 4to, Paris, 22nd October 1796, to General Hoche, in French. The document bears the printed heading, and an ink stamp, of the Minister of Police of the Republic. A very cleanly written lengthy letter, Cochon stating in part `I watch, my dear General, with same sadness as you, the direction that since a while the sense of Public spirit is taking, and am ready to prove with all my correspondence that I have done all I could with the power I hold to prevent the malicious trying to take advantage of the recent events…The government only wishes, and can´t do anything else but wishing, the consolidation of the Republic, and I support this as much as my poor capabilities allow me to do so. I am indignant reading about the horrors and the lies against the Republic that all these Royalist journals, paid with foreign gold, are vomiting. Best known for his victory over Royalist forces in Brittany. Minister of war.The Colonnes Mobiles, also called Colonnes Infernales (Infernal Columns) were operations led by the French revolutionary in the War in the Vendée. The National Convention approved laws allowing the extermination of anti-Republican terrorists in the Vendée. Army columns were formed and sent through the Vendée to exterminate the anti-republican population. The actions of these "Infernal Columns" continue to be a subject of heated debate in France.

STANISLAW II: (1732-1798) Stanislaw August Poniatowski. Last King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania 1764-95. Lover of Catherine the Great, he was a great patron of the arts, but still remains a controversial figure in Polish history. A good D.S., `Stanislaus Augustus Rex´, two pages, folio, Warsaw, 9th May 1783, to Antonio Onofrio de Olieci Oviecki, Bishop of Warsaw, in Latin. The King appoints Alexandre Smulikenoski as legitimate Treasurer of Pomerania. The Letter bears alongside the King´s signature a very attractive and large Royal seal. Also bearing an ink registry stamp to the upper right corner. Countersigned by Nicolas Siliorsli. Folded, with tears to the fold edges, and small tear to the seal, none affecting the signature. [EMPRESS ALEXANDRA FEODOROVNA & DAUGHTERS]: (1872-1918) Alix of Hesse. Empress Consort of Russia 1894-1917, wife of Tsar Nicholas II. The last Tsarina of Russia, known for her notorious friendship with the Russian mystic Rasputin. Assassinated. An excellent original 3.5 x 5.5 postcard photograph, unsigned, the attractive image showing the Empress standing outdoors alongside her four daughters, Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia, all in a full length pose. Circa 1915. Bearing a stamp to the verso, stating `Comité Anti-Bolcheviste´ and its Parisian address at Rue Lacepede. Small overall age wear. G £250-350 This photograph was issued by the Russian Imperial family through the Anti-Bolshevik fund. Only sixty were issued, and at that time they reached extremely expensive prices. Olga (1895-1918); Tatiana (1897-1918); Maria (1899-1918) and Anastasia (1901-1918) were the four daughters of Tsar Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. All of them were assassinated together with Aleksei, their only son, on 17th July 1918 by the Bolsheviks.

Accompanied by a T.L.S., by a secretary, one page, 4to, same place and date, on the President of the Reichstag printed stationery, to Walter Burry, in German. Also including the original envelope, post-stamped, bearing to the verso an attractive red paper stamp of the President of the Reichstag. G £250-350

BERIA LAVRENTIY: (1899-1953) Soviet Politician & Marshal, Chief of the Soviet secret police, NKVD, under Joseph Stalin during WWII. Executed. Beria was responsible of the Katyn massacre in Poland and of the expansion of the Gulag labor camps, overseeing the Great Purge. He attended the Yalta Conference with Stalin, who introduced him to U.S President Roosevelt as “our Himmler”. A good T.L.S., `L. Beria´, in bold pencil, three pages, on three separate sheets, 4to, Moscow, 1st of January 1940, on the NKVD printed letterhead, to Tovarisch Voroshilov Marshal of the Soviet Union, People´s Commissar for Defence of the USSR, in Cyrillic. The war-time document bears to the upper right corner a red ink stamp stating Top Secret. Also signed by Kliment Y. Voroshilov (1881-1969), `KV´, in blue pencil, to the upper left border. The document naming NKVD officers who should be removed, and saying `Department of Military Counterintelligence of Leningrad Military District informs:.. At the army headquarters regular and quick communication with the corps and divisions headquarters is still not established. Combat order of the army headquarters are received with delay. There are serious shortcomings in the ensuring of..´ Further detailing three reports to support such assertion, related to lack of rifles supply, to the death of an officer and two soldiers because of late order communication forwarded, etc.. and stating in part `On the opening lines there is a need for mortars. Nevertheless, Commander of the 90th Rifle Division Zaitsev agreed with regiment commanders that there is no need for mortars because nobody at the subunits knows how to use them..´ Signed by Beria in his capacity as People's Commissar for Internal Affairs of the URSS Two binder holes to the left border, not affecting the text or signatures. VG £250-350After Stalin's death in March 1953, Lavrentiy Beria became First Deputy Premier of the Soviet Union and head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He formed a troika alongside Malenkov and Molotov that briefly led the country in Stalin's place. However, in a coup d´état launched by Nikita Khrushchev with help from Marshal Zhukov on June 1953, Beria was removed from power, arrested on charges of 357 counts of rape and treason. He was sentenced to death and executed in December 1953.

PATTON GEORGE S.: (1885-1945) General of the United States Army, Commander of the U.S. Third Army following the Allied invasion of Normandy during WWII. T.L.S., `G.S Patton Jr.´, one page, 4to, 25th July 1945, on the printed letterhead of the Headquarters of the Third United States Army, Office of the Commanding General, to Mr. Gordon R. Cotton. The present letter is signed only two months after the surrender of Hitler´s Nazi army and six months before he passed away in an auto accident in Germany. Accompanied by the original Headquarters Third United States Army printed heading envelope, with the typed text above “General G. S. Patton, Jr.”, with an ink post stamp of the U.S Army Postal Service. Folded, otherwise in very fine condition. About EX £600-900

Best known for his autobiographical novel The Confession of a Child of the Century ("Confession d'un enfant du siècle" (1836), in part related to his love affair with George Sand. Rare and attractive ink drawing by Musset [c.1851], which relates to the coup d´etat of 2nd December 1851. The 9.5 x 6.5 light brown page showing three men running out from the "Conseil d´État" ("State Council"), struck down by the Law of Napoleon III. At the base of the drawing stating `The auditors chased from the Paradise on earth´. The drawing page has been affixed to a thicker card. Bearing a collection ink stamp to the verso, Artine Artinian (1907-2005) French literature professor at the Bard, NY University and collector. Creasing to the corners as a result of the affixing, and remnants of former affixing to the verso of the card. Small overall age wear and staining, otherwise G £1200-2000Alfred de Musset wrote about politicians and Ministers saying `Most Ministers are quacks, replacing each other, without changing anything to the sick´s health, and the worst craziness is to believe that revolutions can improve a nation prosperity.´

The partially printed document shows the heading of the war ministry, and Bernadotte requests `..the maximum order in the way we have control of the use of funds which will be given to us for the purchase of the equipments and goods for the military convoys..´ With blank address leaf, bearing an ink stamp of the Minister of war, and with very small area of paper loss due to the opening. Boldly signed in black ink at the foot by the Kaiser, a very large and good example signature. L.S., Le Duc D´Otrante, one page, folio, Paris, 7th April 1810, to the Minister of war, on the Police Générale printed stationery, in French. Fouché states in part `Monsieur the Duke, Sieur Walter Boyd, an English former Banker in Paris, requests a passport to travel to Norway, where he has important affairs to sort out. He has explained that having been deprived of his fortune because of war, and having spent all his patrimony, he cannot continue maintaining his family.´, further saying `I kindly ask your Excellence to give order to check if Sieur Boyd do not have to be considered any more as a war prisoner, and give me your opinion regarding the request of this foreigner.´ Also signed to the left border by General François Nicolas Fririon (1766-1840), Chief of Staff under Marshal Massena, acknowledging receipt on 10th of April and forwarding the Minister´s order. The document bears a red ink stamp to the heading and an attractive Pro Patria watermark. Folded, with very small overall minor age wear and left edge very slightly irregularly trimmed. One very small hole not affecting the text or signature, otherwise G £120-200
