TITANIC MEMORABILIA - A photographic autograph postcard after an original photograph taken by J.W. BARKER from R.M.S. Carpathia, depicting a lifeboat with survivors pulling alongside the ship, signed and insribed on verso: "S.S. Carpathia. Dear archie, here is a photo of a few of the survivors being picked up notice they are nearly all women and children and see how many more could have been put into that boat it could have taken 35 more if you notice they are all wearing life Belts they fit like gaskets on them this was the sixth boat we picked up will send you more photos later of the boats being picked up yours sincerely J. McQuair" (no stamp or date, no copyright print for J.W. Barker, some soiling, tear to head affecting top of the image but not the inscription on verso, corners bumped) Provenance: By direct descent Note: Mr. J.W. Barker was a passenger on Carpathia and took photographs from the deck as survivors were rescued from the Titanic lifeboats. The image appears identical to one printed in The Sphere newspaper, May 4th, 1912 and attributed to Barker. Carpathia was sailing from New York City to Rijeka on the night of Sunday, 14th April 1912. She was 60 miles away from the Titanic when it received the S.O.S. signal from the crew of the stricken ship. At 4 o'clock in the morning she arrived at the scene and was able to save 705 people.
