RENOIR PIERRE-AUGUSTE: (1841-1919) French Impressionist Artist. A good vintage signed 8.5 x 9.5 photograph, being a reproduction of one of the artist's studies of several nude females. Signed ('Renoir') in ink with his name alone to the lower border. Also signed by the Mayor of Cagnes beneath a short statement confirming the authenticity of Renoir's signature, dated 8th January 1911 (?). The lower border also features the Mayor's official purple rubber stamp. Neatly mounted to a page removed from a contemporary album. DICKENS CHARLES: (1812-1870) English Novelist. A good autograph envelope signed, Charles Dickens, addressed in his hand to Edwin Chadwick in Richmond, Surrey, and marked 'Private'. With a Penny Red postage stamp affixed and post marked 10th August 1857. Signed by Dickens to the lower left corner. Lacking the majority of the flap to the verso and with a couple of folds, not affecting the signature. About VG Edwin Chadwick (1800-1890) English Social Reformer, noted for his work to reform the Poor Laws and improve sanitary conditions and public health.
TROLLOPE ANTHONY: (1815-1882) English Novelist. D.S., Anthony Trollope, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p. (London?), 14th May 1864. The partially printed document is a Bill of Exchange for the sum of £36.9.2 completed at St. Thomas, Barbados, 26th April 1864, and drawn on Trollope in care of his publishers, Messrs. Chapman & Hall in London. Trollope has boldly signed his name across the document, adding the word 'Accepted' in his hand above his signature, and also adding the name and address of his bank, 'Union Bank of London, Princes Street, City' and the date, 14th May 1864, in his hand beneath his signature. The Bill is payable to the order of Messrs. John Newton & Co. and bears a Bank of England stamp. To the verso Newton & Co. have assigned the Bill to Geo. G. Sandeman Sons & Co., and is endorsed with their instruction and with a large Foreign Bill Six Pence fiscal revenue stamp affixed, again also bearing a Bank of England stamp. Very slightly irregularly torn to the left edge and with some light overall age wear and minor creasing, about VG
CHRISTIE AGATHA: (1890-1976) English Crime Writer. T.L.S., Agatha Christie Mallowan, one page, 8vo, Wallingford, Berkshire, 28th September 1968, to Mr. Nuttall. Christie states that she was most interested to see the article which her correspondent had sent her and continues 'I shall be very pleased to agree to the quotation and reference from my book The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding being used'. Christie also asks her correspondent to tell Councillor Thompson how interested she was in his account of Abney and that when it is printed and produced she would be very grateful to have a copy, further remarking 'Abney is a landmark in my life, and though I am now 78 years of age I still remember it, and my visits there, quite distinctly'. With several ink annotations in unidentified hands and a date stamp of Cheadle & Gatley Urban District Council at the head and two file holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature. Accompanied by a page removed from an Express newspaper of 20th July 1972 featuring an article with the headline Agatha Christie's childhood memories of Abney Hall'. About VG, 2 Christie's brother-in-law, James Watts, was the last private owner of Abney Hall, a large Victorian house situated in Cheadle. As the present letter illustrates, Christie frequently visited Abney Hall and wrote two stories from there, After the Funeral and the short story The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding. In her book, Agatha Christie: A Readers Companion (2004) Vanessa Wagstaff writes 'Abney became Agatha's greatest inspiration for country-house life, with all the servants and grandeur which have been woven into her plots'.
ADLER ALFRED: (1870-1937) Austrian Doctor, Psychotherapist, and the founder of the School of Individual Psychology. Adler's most famous concept is the inferiority complex. A.L.S., Dr Alf Adler, on two sides of a printed postcard with the title Internationale Zeitschrift fur Indiv[idualpsychologie; the remaining text obscured by scuffing caused by the removal of a postage stamp], Vienna, 27th June 1924, to Dr. Rene Allendy in Paris, in German. Adler states that he has sent his correspondent two of his books, following a request from Dr. E. Schlesinger, and adds that both books have already been translated into English and have become influential. He continues to add that he looks forward to Allendy's opinion of them and thanks his correspondent for his efforts in arranging a speech about Individual Psychology at the Sorbonne, further sending a new edition of the Zeitschrift fur Individualpsychologie as a gift. Several postal cancellations very slightly effect the text, but not the signature, and the card is neatly annotated in ink at the base of the verso of the postcard. BRANLY EDOUARD: (1844-1940) French Physicist & Inventor, recognised for his early involvement in wireless telegraphy. A.L.S., E Branly, one page, 8vo, n.p., 23rd January 1929, to [the architect Monsieur Claude?], in French. Branly informs his correspondent that he had sent his acceptation on the date indicated and continues 'I have just found the mislaid paper; I am putting my signature on it. This will be preferable for uniformity'. Together with an envelope (evidently not the original one which accompanied the present letter) hand addressed by Branly to Monsieur Claude in Paris and post marked 4th February 1925. Stamp torn away. Slightly irregularly torn to the left edge of the letter, not affecting the text or signature. About VG, 2
ANNE: (1665-1714) Queen of England, Scotland & Ireland 1702-07 and Queen of the Kingdom of Great Britain 1707-14. D.S., Anne R, as Queen, at the head, one page (vellum), oblong folio, Court at Windsor, 2nd August 1709. The manuscript document is a military commission appointing John Lloyd to be a Captain in the Regiment of Foot commanded by Archibald, Earl of Ilay. Countersigned at the foot by Henry Boyle (1669-1725) 1st Baron Carleton. Anglo-Irish Politician, Lord Treasurer of Ireland 1704-15 & Northern Secretary 1708-10. Lacking the seal although with the pale blue revenue stamp affixed in the left margin. Some light overall age wear and a few minor stains, G Archibald Campbell (1682-1761) 3rd Duke of Argyll, Earl of Ilay (from 1706). Scottish Nobleman, Politician & Soldier. One of the founders of the Royal Bank of Scotland.
GEORGE V: (1865-1936) King of the United Kingdom 1910-36. Large D.S., George R. I., as King, at the head, one page, large oblong folio, Court of Saint James, 7th January 1936. The partially printed document appoints Archibald Wallace Robertson to be Consul for Transylvania, the Romanian Banat, Oltenia, Muntenia (except the Gudete of Braila and Ramnicu-Sarat) and the Gudet of Durostor in the Dobrogea, and to reside at Bucharest, with effect as from 2nd December 1935. Countersigned at the foot by Anthony Eden (1897-1977) British Politician, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs 1935-38, 1940-45 and 1951-55, later Prime Minister 1955-57. With blind embossed seal and with a partially printed stamp to the upper right corner, in French, signed by a Romanian minister, certifying the appointment. NIXON RICHARD: (1913-1994) American President 1969-74. Vintage signed and inscribed colour 8 x 10 photograph of Nixon in a head and shoulders pose. The official White House photograph bears a credit stamp and date, 28th September 1969, to the verso. Signed, as President, in dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount and with a calligraphic inscription in another hand. MONTGOMERY B. L.: (1887-1976) British Field Marshal of World War II. Signed 6 x 8 photograph, the vintage image depicting Monty standing in a half length pose wearing his uniform and beret as he stirs a cup of tea which he holds in his hand. A Union Jack flag can be seen flying at high mast in the background. Photograph by the Photographic News Agencies Ltd (‘as passed by Censor, Press and Censorship Bureau’) and bearing their credit stamp to the verso. AUSCHWITZ: An A.L.S. by Jan Paszko, a Prisoner of War, two pages, 8vo (on the official printed folding stationery of Konzentrationslager Auschwitz), Block 20, Auschwitz, 30th November 1941, to his wife and children, in German. Paszko states that he has received his wife's letter and is pleased that she is taking some advice, remarking that she is due some money as long as the mill is running and advising her 'Go and take the allocation document to the insurance company, take it Szereb and he will tell you whether you can get the money, and, if so, how'. Accompanied by the front panel of the original partially printed Konzentrationslager Auschwitz envelope, hand addressed by Paszko (extensive age wear and numerous small tears etc at the edges, only P). With an official Auschwitz stamp. Some light age wear and a few small, neat splits at the edges of the folds, about VG
CHAMBERLAIN NEVILLE: (1869-1940) British Prime Minister 1937-40. T.L.S., N. Chamberlain, one page, 4to, 11 Downing Street, Whitehall, 23rd June 1937, to J. W. Robertson Scott. Chamberlain states 'Sometime ago you wrote to me to ask whether I would give you an occasional note for “The Countryman”.' and continues 'If you think the enclosed of sufficient interest for publication, you are welcome to put it in, but I shall quite understand if you consider it too trivial'. In a holograph postscript Chamberlain remarks 'In any case, I don't want any payment for this note'. With a received date stamp at the head and some light staining and creasing, not affecting the text or signature. Together with Arthur James Balfour (1848-1930) British Prime Minister 1902-05. Vintage signed postcard photograph of Balfour in a half length pose. Signed ('Arthur James Balfour') in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to the lower white border. JOHNSON AMY: (1903-1941) English Pioneer Aviatrix. An interesting A.L.S., Amy Johnson, two pages, 8vo, Salzburg, 4th February n.y., to the philatelists Francis J. Field Ltd ('Dear Sirs'). Johnson apologises for the delay in responding to her correspondent's letter and continues 'I am very interested to hear that you have seen one of my air-mail covers & should like to know under what circumstances you saw it, if you can disclose them to me. I am interested because I took only ten such “covers” with me, of which I have given five or six away (one was sold at the Johannesburg Exhibition) & I am wondering if any of these are now in circulation'. Johnson further states 'Unfortunately I have only four left, of which I wish to keep two or three. This means that the number for sale is very limited' and concludes 'Would you let me know what is your idea of value of these covers. If you wished to borrow one to examine or photograph you can do so….Unfortunately they are not yet signed but I expect to be back in the middle of next week'. With a couple of pencil annotations to the margin, including '£5 each offered'. Some light creasing, age wear and a couple of small tears to the lower edge of each page, only very slightly affecting the text and signature. About VG Francis J. JOHNSON AMY: (1903-1941) English Pioneer Aviatrix. T.L.S., Amy Johnson, one page, 4to, Seine-et-Oise, 26th August 1937, to the philatelists Francis J. Field ('Dear Sirs'). Johnson states that her correspondent's letter has been forwarded to her whilst on holiday and continues 'I am afraid that the airmail cover you ask for is in England, but I expect to be over there within the next day or so and I will send it on to you immediately. Will you please express my regret to your client for this inevitable delay'. Some light staining to the central fold and some minor age wear to the edges, only very slightly affecting a few words of text but not the signature, G Francis J. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph by both Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier individually, the image depicting the couple standing and seated together in half length poses. Photograph by Vivienne of London and bearing her credit stamp to the verso. Signed ('Vivien Leigh') by Leigh in bold blue fountain pen ink and signed ('L Olivier') by Olivier in blue fountain pen ink, both with their names alone to the lower border. Four small tape stains to the corners, one only very slightly affecting Olivier's signature. Together with a vintage signed postcard photograph by Laurence Olivier, the early image depicting the actor kneeling in a three quarter length pose in costume as King Henry V. HOPPE E. O.: (1878-1972) German-born British Portrait Photographer. T.L.S., E. O. Hoppe, one page, 4to, South Kensington, London, 30th July 1929, to G. H. Grubb. Hoppe announces 'To work with St. John Adcock is always a deep pleasure and, to my mind, he himself is a "Glory of Grub Street"' and continues 'I am sorry that I cannot send you a G.[eorge] B.[ernard] S.[haw] signature. - I have mislaid those which I had, but could you not obtain one of his numerous and famous postcards?'. Together with an original vintage unsigned 4 x 6 photograph of George Bernard Shaw by Hoppe, the image depicting Shaw seated in a half length pose resting his head on one arm. With Hoppe's credit stamp to the verso. Also including an original vintage unsigned 5.5 x 6.5 photograph of Anatole France by Hoppe, the image depicting France in a semi-profile head and shoulders pose.
