Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Lord Hugh Caswall Dowding and Hawker Hurricane" Original Watercolor on paper painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 17p Lord Dowding/Hurrican stamp issued September 16, 1986. As a member of Great Britain's Air Council, Lord Hugh Caswall Dowding urged decisions which eventually turned the course of history toward freedom in World War II. He did this through his insistence that the Royal Air Force (RAF) use metal rather than wood construction for its planes. In 1936, Dowding was appointed the first Commander-in-Chief, RAF Fighter Command, responsible for the air defense of the entire United Kingdom. In this position, he worked feverishly to perfect radar and the fighter aircraft Hurricane. History would show that Dowding's foresight in developing both these defenses contributed much to the RAF's victory in the Battle of Britain in 1940. The Hawker Hurricane was the first fighter aircraft in the world to have eight machine-guns. First deliveries of the aircraft were made in late 1937 and by 1939 the RAF had nineteen Hurricane squadrons. The Hurricane was astonishingly versatile and rugged. Its armament was progressively increased and augmented by bombs and rockets. Best remembered for its amazing feats in the Battle of Britain, the Hurricane in 1940 shot down more enemy aircraft than all other home defense elements combined. It fought in France, Russia, North Africa and Burma. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 14.25 x 18.5 in. Unframed. (B10536)

Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "H.M.S. Resolution Near Alaska" Signed lower left. Oil on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 13c Captain James Cook stamp issued in 1978. Cook's instruction on the third voyage was to seek a trade route to China and the East, one which would save European traders the long and dangerous trip around the Cape of Good Hope. The search for the Northwest Passage occupied most of 1778 and took Cook along the hazardous Alaskan coast. As his ships the H.M.S. Resolution and H.M.S. Discovery sailed farther and farther north, it became evident that the chances for discovering a navigable sea passage were very remote. Soon they were carefully threading their way around jagged ice floes. "We were at this time in 20 fathoms of water," wrote Cook in his journal in August, "... close to the edge of the ice which was as compact as a wall and seemed to be ten or twelve feet high at least. The Discovery being about a mile astern and to leeward found less water than we did and was obliged to tack for it. Our situation was now more and more critical, we were in shoald water upon a lee shore and the main body of the ice in sight to wind ward and driving down upon us." By his expert seamanship, Cook was able to sail free from danger. He was beaten by the ice. But, he was convinced, only for the time being. "My attention was now directed toward finding out some place where we could obtain wood and water, and in the considering of how I should spend the winter so as to return to the north in the ensuing summer." He chose Hawaii for winter quarters. A fateful decision, for there Cook met an untimely death in an incident with the natives. Image Size: 18.25 x 19.75 in. Overall Size: 21 x 23 in. Unframed. Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Battle of the Bulge" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.S. 29c Battle of the Bulge stamp issued June 6, 1994. On the morning of December 16, 1944, secretly massed German artillery opened fire on the thinly spread American defenders in the Ardennes. Operation WATCH ON THE RHINE, the Third Reich's last desperate gamble to save itself by forcing the Western Allies to make peace had begun. When the four-hour bombardment ended, German infantry and tanks, led by SS General Josef Dietrich, began advancing through the woods and hills of the Ardennes to seize bridges across the Meuse river between Lige and Namur. The German advance against the badly outnumbered Americans, fighting in mud, snow and bitter cold, was rapid at first. By late December, a 50-mile "bulge" had been created in the Allied lines. With St. Vith taken and Bastogne surrounded, it looked like Hitler's final gamble might pay off. Capturing Bastogne would give the Germans access to many roads leading in all directions, allowing them to move almost at will. But the men of the 101st Airborne Division, under Brigadier General Anthony C. McAuliffe, fought back doggedly. McAuliffe's famous response to the German commander demanding his surrender was "Nuts!" Helped out by General George S. Patton's tanks and infantry, Bastogne held and McAuliffe was later awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. By early January the fight had turned against the Germans. By the end of that month German forces had been all but destroyed and the "bulge" squeezed out. Image Size: 16.75 x 13 in. Overall Size: 23.25 x 18.5 in. Unframed. (B14763)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Robert E. Lee" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.S. 32c Jefferson Davis stamp issued June 29, 1995. Graduate of West Point, hero of the Mexican War, U.S. senator and U.S. secretary of war, Jefferson Davis believed fervently that the federal government should respect the right of property in slaves. Any interference, he felt, was unconstitutional and a threat to state sovereignty. On January 5, 1861, declaring that the Union was composed of independent states, voluntarily confederated and free to resume their sovereignty, he joined fellow senators in urging Southern states to secede and organize a Confederacy. Secession was not revolution to Davis, but a legal remedy. After his home state of Mississippi seceded, he resigned from the Senate and returned home to accept the rank of major general and command of the state's military forces. When the Provisional Congress selected him as president of the Confederacy, however, he reluctantly took office on February 18, 1861. Confident that law and right were on his side, President Davis was equally convinced that might was on the side of the North. The lightly-industrialized South had about nine million people, compared to the heavily-industrialized North's 22 million. After the war, accused of treason and of taking part in Lincoln's assassination, Davis was imprisoned. Held in leg chains and treated harshly, he was twice indicted, but never brought to trial. He was released on May 13, 1867, to become a symbol of the Confederacy second only to Robert E. Lee. Never requesting or receiving a pardon, he died on December 6, 1889. Image Size: 15.5 x 12.75 in. Overall Size: 23.25 x 18.25 in. Unframed. (B15023)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Oriental Sweetlips" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Federated States of Micronesia 75c Oriental Sweetlips stamp issued August 5, 1994. Coral reefs are home to myriad species of fish. In fact, reefs offer one of the most diverse habitats on Earth, attracting more different species than any land habitats. The Oriental Sweetlips is a distinctive inhabitant of Micronesian waters. It undergoes a remarkable change in appearance as it matures, transforming from mostly dark brown with a few cream blotches, to dramatically striped as an adult. Image Size: 11.25 x 15.75 in. Overall Size: 14.5 x 22 in. Unframed. (B14813)

David K Stone (Oregon, 1922 - 2001) "District of Columbia circa 1800" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 29c District of Columbia stamp issued September 7, 1991. After the Revolutionary War, Congress decided that the federal government needed a permanent home. Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton suggested that the capital be built on federal land, and in 1791 President George Washington selected territory along the Potomac River -- ceded from both Maryland and Virginia. In 1800 the federal government took up residence in Washington City, in the newly-established District of Columbia. The city -- initially governed by Congress and later by Congressionally-appointed commissioners -- underwent massive changes during the next one hundred years. The British set fire to the city in 1814, burning both the Capitol and President's Residence. Enormous growth following the Civil War and both World Wars expanded the city's population base, and local clamors for equal political participation were finally heard in 1964 -- when District residents cast their first Presidential election ballots. Image Size: 17.75 x 24.75 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 27 in. Unframed. (B13236)

David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "New York Statehood" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22c New York Statehood stamp issued July 26, 1988. In the state of New York, the Anti-Federalists had done a good job of organizing and, but for the timing of their convention, they might have won the vote and kept New York out of the new United States. Thanks to machinery set in motion by the powerful Governor George Clinton and his associates, the Anti-Federalists found a receptiveness to their point of view in New York. There, articles appeared in newspapers against, as well as for, the Constitution, and the opinions and viewpoints of "Cato," "Brutus," "Sidney," and "A Republican" were immortalized in print. In February, a committee of seven Anti-Federalists organized in Albany to help manage the elections of delegates to the state convention. They corresponded with other New York Anti-Federalists, wrote articles for the newspapers, and distributed pamphlets. When the convention convened in Poughkeepsie in the summer of 1788, the vast majority of delegates were opposed to ratification. But soon the news arrived that New Hampshire and Virginia had ratified, and the delegates realized that a failure to ratify now would leave New York outside of an already-existing Union. Aaron Burr put it succinctly, stating that, "after the adoption by ten states, I think it became both politic and necessary that we should also adopt it (the Constitution)." New York ratified the Constitution on July 26, 1788, the eleventh state to do so. Image Size: 20.75 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 26.75 x 24 in. Unframed. (B11656)

David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "United States Senate" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c United States Senate stamp issued April 6, 1989. The stamp on this First Day Cover was released by the Post Office in honor of the Two Hundredth Anniversary of the first meeting of the Senate. Though the idea for the Senate originated during the Constitutional Convention in 1787, it actually began work in 1789 after ratification of the Constitution. Made up of two Senators from each state, the first Senate convened with only twenty-two members, as two of the original thirteen states had yet to ratify the Constitution. The Constitution provides that a Senator must be thirty years of age, have been a citizen of the United States for at least nine years, and be a resident of the state from which he or she is elected. Traditionally, a Senator is also from a wealthy background, is well educated, likely to be a lawyer, and even more likely a veteran. His or her position in the government, coupled with the structure of the Senate itself, provides a Senator considerable power. The Senate has a complex organizational makeup, relying on committees and subcommittees to process legislation. Each Senator may serve on various committees and virtually every Senator is chairman of at least a subcommittee. Thus, a Senator is likely to influence the decisions made in a number of different committees and subcommittees. This affords him or her the opportunity to be a spokesperson for the Senate as a whole on issues handled in his or her committees. Image Size: 17.75 x 21 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 27 in. Unframed. (B11952)

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Blue Jay" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Wildlife of the 50 States 22c Blue Jay/North Carolina stamp issued June 13, 1987. One of the most commonly found birds of the eastern United States, the Blue Jay is distinguished from other woodland birds by its piercing jay-jay-jay. Known for mimicking the harsh cries of hawks, the Blue Jay nevertheless occasionally sings its own soft, low song and imitates the musical sounds of other songbirds. An inhabitant of forests, suburban gardens and parks, this friendly bird is often found in close proximity to humans. The Blue Jay's curious nature excites birdwatchers who enjoy observing its theatrical antics. A blue-winged bird with white on its wings and tail, the Blue Jay displays a prominent blue crest and black necklace. Black barrings appear on its wings and tail, while its breast and face are white. Though the Blue Jay is easily spotted by its vivid coloring, it is a master of camouflage, able to hide among tree branches even during winter months. An active, noisy bird, the Blue Jay often travels in small parties and enjoys eating nuts, seeds, fruits and insects. During migration, this boisterous bird travels in loose flocks of five to 50 and is a fall and winter visitor to Oregon and California. The Blue Jay's nest is usually located in the fork of a tree or on a branch, and is made of moss, twigs and leaves, which both the male and female gather as a team. The female lays three to six eggs which hatch within 16 to 18 days. Young birds leave the nest in about three weeks. Image Size: 14 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 16.5 in. Unframed. (B10731)

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Osprey" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Wildlife of the 50 States 22c Osprey/Indiana stamp issued June 13, 1987. On wings that may span a full six feet, the Osprey hovers above the water, scanning its mirror-like surface for the slightest movement beneath. Then, plunging downward, feet forward, he vanishes in a spray of foam, rising in triumph with the catch, held in the pincer-like grip of his talons. Heading for home, the Osprey creates a grand silhouette against the sky. A large bird, he sports a gleaming white underside with feathers above of dark brown. A kink in his massive wings allows him to glide in a seemingly effortless maneuver, or to smoothly flap away. The Osprey's is an intricate nest of sticks and twigs, often high in trees or among telephone poles. There, three eggs are generally tended, ranging in color from white to cinnamon, with spots of chocolate brown. Once hatched, the chicks eagerly await the return of their hunter-father. The mother determines proper portions, then each takes its turn eating. In five or six weeks, the young look like their parents and begin exercising wings that will take them to flight. By mid-summer, they cruise ever-gracefully above the river's edge and along the island shores. Image Size: 13.5 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 14 x 17 in. Unframed. (B10796)

Ed Little (American, B. 1957) "South Dakota Scenes" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 25c South Dakota Statehood stamp issued May 23, 1989. South Dakota sits halfway between the nation's coasts, and halfway between the North Pole and the equator. However, the state is located to the north of America's main travel arteries, and South Dakota is regarded by the many people who don't know it as a mysterious, rugged, frontier state unchanged from the romantic and sometimes bloody ways of days past. A youthful state, South Dakota lacks the long history of the eastern states, the four-hundred-year-old Spanish traditions of the southwestern states, and the well-established Native American culture of other parts of the country -- even South Dakota's Sioux tribes are relative newcomers to the Northern Plains. The first Sioux and the French explorers arrived in the area during the eighteenth century. The nineteenth century brought the Lewis and Clark expedition, fur trade, the gold rush to the Black Hills, Indian uprisings, and the birth of the cattle industry. It also brought heavier settlement around the turn of the century, primarily by German and Scandinavian immigrants, the official end of Indian resistance, and statehood. South Dakota was admitted to the Union as the fortieth state on November 2, 1889, and since then has seen continued population growth, agricultural development, and an expansion of education, culture and the arts. These changes have ushered the South Dakota of the old West into modern times and made it a contemporary western state -- and an integral part of one of the most powerful nations in the world. Image Size: 17.25 x 15 in. Overall Size: 20 x 17 in. Unframed. (B11980)

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Love You Dad" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22c Love You Dad! stamp issued April 20, 1987. Whether he taught you how to hammer a nail without hitting your thumb, throw a football in the backyard, or told you your very first bedtime story, it is only with the fondest of memories that we think of our fathers. Once we thought he was the biggest, strongest man alive, and that he could solve every problem that ever came along. As children, winning his attention was worth the effort. And, as we grew older, earning his respect -- though more of a job -- was a triumph in itself. The man we affectionately call Dad gave us more than life. He gave us a sense of who we are, and how we should act with dignity and honesty. We are ever grateful for his attention and patience as a teacher; his concern and love as a parent, and his helpfulness as a friend. Each Father's Day, we want him to know how much we care, but we should also remember and honor him the rest of the year as well. This artwork presents a colorful and bold rendition of the "Love You, Dad" theme, and forms a loving tribute to fathers everywhere. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. George Sottung (American, 1927 - 1999) "Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll - "Able" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32+8c "Able" stamp issued July 1, 1996. On July 1, 1946, the first of many nuclear tests was performed at Bikini Atoll. Codenamed "Able," this atomic explosion was comparable to those that occurred at Hiroshima and Nagasaki a year earlier. A B-29 -- Dave's Dream -- piloted by Major Woodrow P. Swancutt, was to drop the bomb over the battleship Nevada, moored in the center of the target array. Deployed at 9:00 a.m., the bomb exploded at the correct altitude of 500 feet, but it was off-target by about 2,000 feet and detonated above the attack transport Gilliam. The explosion sank five large vessels and damaged a number of others. The incredible blast generated extremely hot temperatures and created a shock wave that traveled with an initial velocity of more than a mile a second. A gaseous ball of fire rose, creating a mushroom cloud that reached a height of more than 8,000 feet in only 30 seconds. As the cloud cooled, condensed water that had been absorbed into the cloud or vaporized by the explosion created a light, radioactive rain over Bikini. Image Size: 12.5 x 16.75 in. Overall Size: 16.5 x 20.75 in. Unframed. (B15406)

Gordon Beningfield (British, 1936 - 1998) "California Poppy" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c California Poppy stamp issued July 24, 1992. An appropriate state flower for the "Golden State," the California poppy's brilliant orange-gold flowers conjure visions of sunshine and the lure of gold. Early Spanish explorers found California poppies growing abundantly on hillsides, in valleys, and along ocean shores. Dazzled by this splendor, they christened the poppy copa de oro or "cup of gold." The genus name, Eschscholzia, honors Johann Fredrich Eschscholtz, a German physician and zoologist who accompanied Russian expeditions to the Pacific Coast in the early 1800s. Although its native range extends only from southern California to southern Oregon, California poppies have been planted widely in the Pacific Northwest and other parts of the country. Well-loved for its bright displays, the California poppy is a favorite of gardeners. Forming a mounded clump about a foot tall, the feathery, blue-green foliage contrasts strikingly with the vivid flowers. The California poppy prefers well-drained, sandy soils in full sun. Image Size: 7 x 6 in. Overall Size: 12 x 11 in. Unframed. (B12813)

Jack Fellows (American, B. 1941) "Northrop B-2 "Spirit" Stealth Bomber" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the First Day Cover for the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c Northrop B-2 "Spirit" Stealth Bomber stamp issued July 19, 1997. The B-2 Spirit is a technologically-advanced aircraft more commonly known as the "Stealth bomber." Lacking a conventional tail, the B-2 relies on computers for control. It's unique flying wing design and use of composite radar-absorbing materials in construction make it virtually invisible to early warning defense systems. First Flight Date: July 17, 1989 Image Size: 16.5 x 14.25 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15.25 in. Unframed. (B15660)

This painting is the original which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c F9F-2 Panther stamp issued November 10, 1995. America's F9F-2 Panther was the first U.S. Navy jet to see combat in Korea, downing a North Korean Yak-9 on its initial mission in 1950. Image Size: 16.25 x 14 in. Overall Size: 18.25 x 15.75 in. Jim Butcher (American, B. 1944) "Southwestern Windmill" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 15c Southwestern Windmill stamp issued February 7, 1980. The prairie flower's slender stem reaches skyward while the steel-petaled blossom revolves in the wind. As the endless Texas plain recedes into the distance, this floral species becomes recognizable as an American windmill. Invented around 1860 and used widely throughout the United States, this windmill displays a greater number of blades than its European predecessor. Originally made of wood, but now made of metal, American wind-catchers are not as pretty, nor as graceful as European windmills; but, they have done their jobs for over a century. These scrawny mills have drawn water from the ground that is so valuable to the arid west that it transformed the Great American Desert into the Great Plains. The railroads used the windmills to pump running water into their depot tanks, and ranchers used them to irrigate their land. Windmills supplied water to salt mines in Texas and volunteer fire departments throughout the west. At the end of a hot, dusty day on the trail, sweating cowboys chased their four-footed rivals from the barnyard tank and cooled off in the water the windmills provided. Prairie preachers dunked repentant sinners into water tanks to sanctify them. And, the windmills filled the waiting tanks with water that washed clothes and cooled food. Today, the western prairies are still alive with these whirling windmills, as Americans meet an ancient challenge to capture the restless wind. Image Size: 22.5 x 17.5 in. John Benson (American, B. 1949) "U.S. Flag with Fireworks" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22c Flag with Fireworks stamp issued November 30, 1987. The American flag ... a symbol of freedom and democracy throughout the world ... flies today as magnificently as it did nearly two hundred years ago. Its bright colors, its bold design, its strong message of pride and honor stir the heart and mind of every American citizen. The flag began as a simple sign of solidarity during the Revolutionary War. To unify those believing in the cause, the Continental Colors were chosen and used in open battle. Later, this simple ensign became a symbol of patriotism for the new United States. Soon, it was decided that the design needed to be more symbolic as the young nation sought to become a recognizable and distinctive entity. The flag went through some changes, but always evident were the alternating red and white stripes. After the Revolution, a field of blue also became popular. Later, with the U.S. Constitution signed and ratified, the official flag honored each of the thirteen new states with a star of its own, these arranged in a linear pattern on the field of blue, in the upper left corner of the flag. The stripes of alternating red and white also came to be numbered thirteen, representing the original thirteen states. Today, the flag flies proudly above public and private buildings and at sea, testimony to the glory of a nation. Image Size: 14.25 x 12 in. Overall Size: 21.25 x 18 in. Unframed. (B11306)

John Swatsley (American, B. 1937) "Brother Jonathan Locomotive" Original watercolor painting on illustration board. Signed lower right. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This is the original watercolor painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 22c Brother Jonathan stamp issued October 1, 1987. The early 1830's were marked by improvements in the railroad industry. A man named John Jervis was among the innovators. Jervis was chief engineer for the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad. In 1832, he made improvements which would become standard in locomotives through-out the country. His idea was to lighten the engine by removing the rigid front axle with its single pair of wheels and substituting a front truck with two axles and four wheels. The "Experiment" was built at the West Point Foundry according to Jervis' new design. It was a success adn Jervis' concept was adopted almost immeditatley. The engine was renamed "Brother Johathan" and, achieving speeds of 60 miles per hour, became the fastest locomotive in the world. "Brother Jonathon" was later converted to an eight-sheel construction and served for many years along the rails of America. Jervis had thus paved the way for "Americanization" of the locomotive. The result was a period of progress for the railroad industry. Image Size: 8.75 x 12 in. Overall Size: 15 x 20 in. Unframed. (B10187)

Rich treasures in the form of abundant fisheries can be found in the lucid waters off the Marshall Islands. To protect them, the Republic of the Marshall Islands launched the patrol boat Ionmeto in 1988. She has sailed the islands since that time acting as a deterrent to those who are unlawful and as an aid to those in distress. With the classic lines of the patrol boats of World War II, the Ionmeto can carry a crew of 12. And with a fuel capacity of 9,000 gallons, the Ionmeto is able to ride the swells and patrol outside the reefs for long periods of time. Her high-tech radar, radio and sensing equipment makes her a poacher's nemesis. Image Size: 12.75 x 20 in. Overall Size: 16 x 20 in. Unframed. (B13573)

Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Woman in Grocery Store" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 20c Consumer Education stamp issued April 27, 1982. America's economic system has long been accustomed to the competitive pressures that call for greater business effectiveness, and to internal company pressures that call for greater business efficiency. Only recently, however, have our producers of consumer items experienced the intensity of external pressures that call for greater business responsiveness to the consumer. Indeed, consumer education has made its mark on business. Consumer education, although not of recent origin, has grown substantially in magnitude and impact in the past decade due to an emergence of numerous federally legislated and private consumer awareness groups. In general, a number of government bureaus aid consumers in making prudent and economical purchases, stimulate interest in the problems of consumers, and give information concerning the use and care of consumers' goods. In addition to federally initiated consumer education, various private consumer organizations promote consumer education by testing and rating merchandise, preparing and distributing materials to be used in consumer education programs, lending support and lobbying for legislation favorable to the consumer, providing films that deal with consumer education, and directly advising consumers what items to buy. Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Singapore" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.N. 20c Singapore Flags of the U.N. Series stamp issued September 25, 1981. The fabled nation of Singapore, encompassing a group of small islands off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, has long played a role in world affairs disproportionate to its size. Because Singapore stands athwart one of the premier passageways between the Indian and Pacific oceans, it has served for centuries as a crossroad for the world's sea traffic. Her modern history begins with the Englishman Thomas Raffles. Raffles acquired the island of Singapore from the Malay Sultan of Johore in 1819. Soon, the foundations for a modern city were laid out, with the purpose of transforming a sleepy fishing village into a trade-free emporium of global significance. Raffles' dream was soon realized, for by the middle nineteenth century Singapore had become a major port, as well as an important part of Great Britain's eastern empire. Singapore went on to attain complete independence, and to achieve even greater economic prosperity. Providing merchant ships with such services as transport, banking, storage, repair, communications, and insurance, this tiny nation has developed a reputation as one of the most valuable "middlemen" in Asia. Her people, who are primarily of Chinese origin, enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the East. The literacy rate is impressive, and health facilities and related services are outstanding, making Singapore an excellent place to live and work -- and a colorful, exciting place to visit, for people who happen to be passing between oceans. Paul Calle (1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (B. 1961) "1940s - Aviation Assumes Strategic Importance" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands The 20th Century series 60c Aviation Assumes Strategic Importance stamp issued November 16, 1998. On July 10, 1940, Adolf Hitler ordered Germany's Luftwaffe to begin an assault on Great Britain in anticipation of a full-scale invasion of the island nation. The struggle for air supremacy would become famous as the Battle of Britain. For the first time in history, airplanes -- without the support of armies or navies -- were relied on to destroy an enemy's capacity to resist. Royal Air Force pilots shot down two German planes for every one of their own lost. By the end of October, the disillusioned Fuhrer had postponed the invasion indefinitely. Throughout the course of World War II, many of U.S. General Billy Mitchell's predictions about the important role air power would play became fact. These included strategic bombardment, mass airplane operations, and the eclipse of the battleship by the bomb-carrying airplane. Image Size: 10.25 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 13 x 22 in. Unframed. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands The 20th Century series 60c Archaeology Reveals Past Glories stamp issued March 16, 1998. One of the greatest archeological finds of the 20th century was made in 1922 -- the discovery of the undisturbed tomb of Tutankhamen by Britain's Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter. Tutankhamen, a pharaoh of Egypt's 18th Dynasty, died around 1350 B.C. at the tender age of 18 or 19. For over 3,000 years Tutankhamen's tomb had lain forgotten in the harsh desert of the Valley of the Kings. Not since the discovery of the Rosetta Stone had the field of archaeology been so abuzz with excitement. Thousands of priceless objects were found in the tomb -- including the pharaoh's expertly-preserved mummified body and the solid gold sarcophagus. As newspapers around the globe feverishly covered the event, the whole world was soon caught up in the fascinating details concerning the discovery of the long-dead pharaoh and his fabulous treasures. Shannon Stirnweis (Arizona, New York, New Hampshire Oregon, B. 1931) "Fort Henry" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 32c Fort Henry stamp issued June 30, 1983. Once the early explorers and settlers of Canada had established roots in the New World, they soon realized they must somehow protect their holdings. But, whether they came from France, England ... or from any of the other great European nations, they could not expect aid to arrive quickly from an army or navy stationed thousands of miles away in the Mother Country. Therefore, it became necessary for the nations to erect forts in the New World to protect the territories their explorers and settlers had claimed for the homeland. One fort built to guard British interests in Canada was Fort Henry. Fort Henry was erected in 1813 and is located at Kingston, Ontario, on a strategically important peninsula where the British operated an important port and naval base on the St. Lawrence River. It was the only fort to be built of a series of six detached casemated redoubts which were planned to be built in the early nineteenth century at this location. Over the years, Fort Henry was gradually enlarged, and after the construction of the Rideau Canal, the fort was replaced by a new stone fort, completed in 1836. Fort Henry was garrisoned until 1890, but it later fell into disuse. However, in 1939, it ws completely restored and today is a popular tourist attraction. Image Size: 19.5 x 17 in. Shannon Stirnweis (B. 1931) "Liberation of Smolensk" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Liberation of Smolensk 1943 stamp issued September 25, 1993. Germany's defeat at Kursk in July 1943 marked its last mass effort along the Eastern Front. Hitler, concerned about the Allied landings at Sicily, transferred several of his best divisions to the West. German forces in the East, now hopelessly outnumbered in both men and materiel, had little choice but to fall back. The next two months would see the Germans retreat some 150 miles along a more than 600-mile front, extending from the Donets River in the south, through Kharkov, to the Divina River north of Smolensk. On September 25, facing a rapidly-approaching Red Army, the Germans abandoned Smolensk. Image Size: 21.75 x 17.5 in. Overall Size: 24.75 x 20.5 in. Unframed. (B14354)

Shannon Stirnweis (B. 1931) "Okinawa Invaded by U.S. Marines" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55c Okinawa Invaded by U.S. Forces 1945 stamp issued April 1, 1995. On April 1, 1945, a U.S. invasion force of some 180,000 soldiers and Marines, commanded by Army Lt. General Simon Bolivar Buckner, began landing on the shores of Okinawa. On June 18, Buckner would become the highest ranking American field officer to be killed in combat. Ernie Pyle, the Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent, would also die on nearby Ie Shima. If fighting was savage on Okinawa, the scene offshore was just as violent, with the U.S. Navy confronting waves of swarming kamikazes. For the Japanese Combined Fleet, the battle amounted to a suicide mission, as American planes scored hit after hit -- even sinking the giant Yamato. On June 22, when it was apparent that the Americans were about to take control of the island, commander of the Japanese forces Lt. General Mitsuru Ushijima committed Hara-Kiri -- honorable suicide. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 16p Exeter Mail Coach stamp issued July 31, 1984. On the night of October 20, 1816, the Exeter Mail Coach, which normally ran from Exeter to London, had left its stop at Sailsbury and was proceeding across Salisbury Field. Suddenly the horses began to get nervous and fidgety. Peering into the darkness, the coachmen and passengers saw the mysterious figure of an animal following the team. Not too concerned, they simply assumed it was a large calf and continued on their way. The animals stayed with them. As the Coach pulled into the Pheasant Inn -- also known as the Winterslow Hut -- the creature lunged out of the night, leaping ferociously at the offside leader of the team. The attacker was a hungry lioness which had escaped from a traveling menagerie staying overnight at the inn. The guard and coachment tried to deal with the situation which had taken them by surprise. But, as the guard raised his blunderbuss to shoot the lioness, a voice cried out in the darkness -- it was the owner of the show. He pointed his pistol at the guard's head promsing to shoot if the beast was killed. Astonished passengers ran for the inn, bolting the door behind them. Adding to the madness, a large dog seized the lioness, starting a terrible fight betwen them. Eventually the lioness took refuge behind some stones nearby and her owner and trainer were able to rescue her. The horse recovered and soon was delivering the mail again. But the dramatic incident has often been recounted in the years since it occurred. Image Size: 6 x 7 in. Overall Size: 10.75 x 12 in. Unframed. (B08873)
