[CHURCHILL WINSTON S.]: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. An original unsigned painting purported to be by Churchill, the oil on canvas (14 x 25), Impressionist in style, depicts a country path in spring, with borders of pink, red and white flowers, running alongside a garden wall with the chimney stacks and roof of the residence beyond visible in the background. The canvas bears the stamp of the artist's supplier Percy Young of 131 Gower Street, London, to the verso. The painting is nailed to wooden stretcher bars and is unframed. A few small holes to the edges and corner of the canvas, some light staining to the upper edge and with light overall age wear, GProvenance: The present painting is accompanied by a typed letter signed by Martin Page, grandson of Arthur Page (see previous lot for a signed photograph of Churchill with Page and a letter from Mary Soames to Page) which states, in part, 'The painting used to hang on my Grandfathers wall it was then a picture of delphiniums, painted on heavy paper by a lady artist, a friend of my grandparents, also known to Winston Churchill. The paper gradually started to deteriorate and revealed an oil on canvas underneath. My Grandfather said that Winston used to give used canvases of pictures he was not happy with in his early days of painting away for the lady in question to paint over. And the family believed this was one of those canvasses'. The provenance is by no means conclusive evidence that the present painting is by Churchill, however the use of a canvas supplied by Percy Young (1854-1930) is noteworthy. Young operated from 131 Gower Street from 1905-20 and supplied artists including William Orpen, Walter Sickert and Lucien Pissarro at this time. This period coincides with Churchill first taking up oil painting, at the age of 40, after he was forced to resign from the British government in 1915.
