Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Warsaw Uprising" Artist notes in margins. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Warsaw Uprising 1944 stamp issued August 1, 1994. During World War II, Poland suffered at the hands of the Soviets while being targeted for some of Nazi Germany's worst atrocities as well. Starting with the Luftwaffe attack on Warsaw during the first days of World War II, Polish citizens continually rallied to defend their homeland. Since early 1940, Poland's Home Army -- an underground group of Polish freedom fighters -- had been planning an uprising against the Germans. Encouraged by Russia, the Home Army went forward with its rebellion against German forces on August 1, 1944. However, the Poles were a poor match for the heavily-armed German army. After 63 days of fighting, about 83 percent of Warsaw had been destroyed, and an estimated 18,000 Polish insurgents and some 200,000 civilians had perished. Image Size: 13.5 x 16.5 in. Overall Size: 17.5 x 20.5 in. Unframed. (B14777)

Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "Mathew Sailing Ship" Signed lower right, titled lower left. Original oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 20c Roanoke Voyages stamp issued July 13, 1984. King Henry VII wistfully eyed the riches the Portuguese and Spanish were bringing back from Asia . . . but he knew that the southern sea lanes around Africa were jealously guarded by these two world powers. As he pondered what route his ships might take to reach the Orient, the Venetian sailor John Cabot offered a solution -- sail west by a northerly route. The eager King agreed. On May 2, 1497, John Cabot boarded his lone ship, the Mathew, a 50 ton ship with a crew of only eighteen. Cabot was indeed an able and confident sailor, for who but the most self-assured would take to the rough North Atlantic with so small a crew and no additional boats. And the Mathew indeed proved to be an able ship for she completed the transatlantic voyage of discovery in just eleven weeks . . . a record time that stood for almost a century! Despite the speed, the journey across the Atlantic was difficult, at best. Once in the New World, Cabot thought that he had indeed found Asia. But, as he sailed down the coast he found neither gold nor spices. Instead, he discovered the wealth of the sea and the forest. On June 24, 1497, John Cabot took possession of the new land for King Henry VII. After exploring the coast of Newfoundland, John Cabot returned to England with tales of great forests and waters teeming with fish. The King rewarded Cabot generously for his efforts . . . and the following year sent him to sea again, on a voyage from which he never returned. Image Size: 18.5 x 18.5 in. Overall Size: 26 x 23.75 in. Unframed. (B08851)

Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "Canadian Icebreaker - Northern Light" Original oil painting on masonite. Signed lower left. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canadian 14c Northern Light stamp issued November 15, 1978. Because Prince Edward Island is sheltered from the Atlantic by Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, it is free of fog and its waters are much warmer in summer than those of its neighboring provinces. But, in winter, the narrow Northumberland Strait, surrounding the island on three sides and never more than twenty-five miles wide, is frozen over preventing ready access to the mainland. This frozen strait and the vessels that first worked it have altered the history of this tiny province. One such ship that braved the ice-clogged strait was the Northern Light. Built in Quebec in 1876, she was 144 feet long and weighed nearly four hundred tons. lcebreaking technology was then embryonic, and the Northern Light was thought by many to be a feeble instrument with which to tackle the fierce grip of the strait. Still, for fourteen years she provided mail and passenger service between the mainland and Prince Edward Island. But transportation costs for the Northern Light were too high, and this remarkable ice vessel, one of the very first wooden ships to challenge the frozen north, was scrapped in 1890 after becoming a point of political contention between the Canadian government and the people of Prince Edward Island. Despite the difficulties of geography and transportation, the people of Prince Edward Island have long lived a life of rugged independence on the Northumberland Strait, where the regular run of the Northern Light was once a welcome beacon in the dead of winter. Charles A Knotek (American, 1933 - 2008) "First U.S. Astronaut Orbits Earth" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media Painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the MIPS First Day Cover for the Marshall Islands 80c First U.S. Astronaut to Orbit Earth stamp issued May 15, 2001. "Zero g, and I feel fine." From Friendship 7, John Glenn happily informed mission control of his weightlessness in space. On February 20, 1962, John Glenn became the first U.S. astronaut to orbit the Earth. Two Americans -- Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom -- had flown before Glenn, but their flights lasted only a few minutes each, and did not take them into a full orbit of the Earth. Glenn's flight lasted nearly five hours as he circled the Earth three times. He witnessed four sunsets and saw beautiful views of Earth from space. On the first night of his orbit, Glenn passed over western Australia, where the people in Perth turned on all their lights to signal Friendship 7. He was amazed at the geography of the Earth from space: "I can see the whole state of Florida just laid out like a map. It's beautiful!" Because of a computer malfunction, Glenn had to pilot the spacecraft himself upon reentry -- and safely, splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean. The mission was a success for NASA and a milestone in future space exploration. Image Size: 12.75 x 16.25 in. Overall Size: 15 x 20 in. Unframed. (B99017)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "American Eagle" Signed lower right. Original watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. ND (10c) Eagle and Shield Coil stamp issued May 21, 1996. The magnificent Eagle, symbolizing freedom, strength and pride, has profoundly influenced American civilization from early Native American Indian cultures to modern times. Native Americans believed the Eagle embodied the spiritual power of nature, as well as possessing physical attributes, such as speed, ferocity and sharpness of eye. The Eagle was selected as America's national symbol on June 20, 1782, when the Great Seal of the United States was adopted by Congress. Prominently displayed in the center of the seal, a majestic Eagle -- representing sovereignty and pride -- grips several arrows and an olive branch in its talons, signifying America's power to make peace and war. On the Eagle's breast appears a shield suggesting the nations flag. Six red stripes on a white field symbolize valor and courage, while the blue upper border represents justice and vigilance. In the early 1800s, craftsmen from New England often carved the image of the Eagle on figureheads for ships, as well as nautical furniture and architecture. It was believed that the qualities of the Eagle were passed on to those who sailed under its protection. Today, the Eagle is a threatened species in danger of extinction. This symbolic protection of America requires the protection of all American's if it is to survive. Image Size: 14 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 22 x 29.25 in. Unframed. (B11493)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Olympic Centennial Games - Basketball" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 32? Basketball Classic Collection Series stamp issued May 2, 1996. Basketball is considered the only sport strictly of United States origin, and made its Olympic debut in 1936. Over the years, basketball -- both the game and its players -- has gained international popularity. Today, fans around the world follow the scores of American college and professional teams, as well as those of teams from their own country. Generally considered the most athletically-demanding of all sports, requiring a combination of strength, speed, coordination and endurance, basketball continues to grow as an international and an Olympic sport. In the 1992 Games at Barcelona, the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team averaged over 117 points a game with an average winning margin of 44 points! The American players were so overwhelming that competitors considered it an honor to play against and lose to them. Image Size: 14.25 x 10.25 in. Overall Size: 23 x 14.75 in. Unframed. (B15482)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "D-Day Invasion" Signed lower right. Original watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card of the U.S. 29c Allies in Normandy, D-Day stamp issued June 6, 1994. For most of World War II, an attack on German-occupied France had been a dream envisioned by the Allies. It wasn't until the end of 1943 that the Allies had a supreme commander for what would be called Operation OVERLORD. The cause of this delay was Anglo-American differences over who would hold the position. Once it became obvious that the United States would be providing most of the manpower and material for the invasion, Britain accepted the appointment of an American supreme commander. The man chosen for the post was General Dwight D. Eisenhower. His greatest gift was his diplomatic tact that bridged the mutual suspicions of the British and Americans. On assuming supreme command in January 1944, Eisenhower made several important stategic decisions. The first was to agree with British General Bernard Law Montgomery that the proposed invasion front had to be doubled in area and streched westward. Second, the number of invading divisions had to be increased. Third, since increased forces required more landing craft, and these could not be had until early June, Eisenhower ordered the invasion postponed an month. On June 6, 1944, the Allies' dream came true, when five seaborne and three airborne divisions landed in Normandy. A difficult and complicated assault, these landings were the product of careful planning, successful deception and good fortune. Image Size: 11.75 x 19.25 in. Overall Size: 14.5 x 22 in. Unframed. Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Regal Angelfish Swimming over Coral" Signed lower right. Original watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Federated States of Micronesia 29c Regal Angelfish Native Fish stamp issued May 14, 1993. Some of the world's most colorful and eye-catching fish are found in Micronesian waters. The Bennett's Butterflyfish is among the most striking in coloration. Characterized by a brilliant yellow body with a distinctive black spot rimmed in white, it takes on a more somber pattern during evening hours while feeding on coral polyps at the ocean bottom. The handsome Orangestriped Triggerfish shares this appetite for polyps and can effortlessly nip off brittle pieces of coral with its powerful teeth and jaws. When this fish is disturbed, the first of its three stout spines on the dorsal fin locks upright and can be dropped only when the second smaller "trigger" spine, which fits into a groove behind the first, is depressed. Another sea creature common to Micronesia is the Regal Angelfish. The male of this species will tirelessly defend its territory, which often includes a "harem" of two to five females. Most Moray eels are also considered highly defensive. However, the distinctive Zebra Moray, despite its snake-like appearance, is surprisingly docile and shy. Image Size: 11.25 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 23 in. Unframed. (B14334)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Shoshone Headdress" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.S. 25c Shoshone stamp issued August 17, 1990. Into the headdress of the Shoshone went pieces of the mountains where they lived. From the high, rocky crags came the tail feathers of a Golden Eagle; the deep snows of the high country yielded the fur of an ermine; from forests of pine and spruce came the feathers of the flicker and the quills of a porcupine. And each piece of the headdress had a special meaning: the ermine fur and eagle feathers gave the wearer protection .. the flicker feathers had healing powers. Great effort went into the making of each headdress -- prepared by the elders through an elaborate ceremony and accompanying song -- thus only the very great men of the Shoshone wore this badge of prestige and honor. Among the Shoshone, the chieftain did not obtain his prowess through heredity, it was obtained only through acts of bravery and valor. These deeds were then reflected in the headband of the war bonnet -- for every great feat there were two holes. In a land of deep canyons, snow-clad peaks and harsh desert -- today known as the north-central Rockies -- bravery was a necessity. Without it, the leader along with his entire band could perish, be it from enemy or elements. With it, the chieftain was destined for fame among his people. Yet the most famous Shoshone of all was a woman, Sacagawea, who led the Lewis and Clark expedition across the vast, unmapped expanse of the Louisiana Purchase and paved the way for later friendship between the whites and the Shoshone. Her contribution changed the history of the West. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 16 in. Unframed. (B12427)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "WWII - U.S. Declares War on Japan" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally used on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 29c U.S Declares War on Japan, December 8 stamp issued September 3, 1991. "Yesterday, December 7, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." With these immortal words, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt appeared before a joint session of Congress on December 8, 1941. In a pointed, moving speech, Roosevelt, drawn and haggard from a night with little sleep, continued: "I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire." Only thirty-three minutes later, Congress passed a declaration of war with Japan. That same day, a resolute FDR signed the declaration and America entered the Second World War. Surprisingly, Roosevelt's words were a little different in the first draft of the Congress message. After the initial draft, the words ".. a date which will live in world history" were changed to the famous and more powerful ".. a date which will live in infamy. Regardless, the effect of the attack and Roosevelt's speech was unforgettable: Recruiting stations were packed with men wishing to enter the Armed Forces and angry cries for revenge swept across the country. From that day forward, Americans would not rest in their drive to free the world. Image Size: 13.25 x 23.25 in. Overall Size: 20 x 23.25 in. Unframed. (B13091)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "WWII - The War Ends, Veterans Return" Signed lower right. Original watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c The War Ends, Veterans Return stamp issued September 2, 1995. As servicemen returning from the war stepped off planes and ships, they were hailed by bands and welcomed home by military personnel. Exuberant at their return, many bent down to kiss the American ground they had not seen in years. Technology and growth had continued to blossom while they were at war. One soldier exclaimed, "Here you see new construction. There all you saw was new destruction." Each soldier made a telephone call to a loved one, some hearing for the first time the voices of children who had been born after they had left for the war. The simple luxuries of a good barber and a glass of fresh, ice-cold milk pleased veterans as they waited to board trains for the final leg of their journey, home to their families. Many returning soldiers suffered post-war trauma. In one instance, a bus transporting wounded soldiers from a ship to a nearby hospital was in an accident while traveling in rush-hour traffic. All were taken off the bus and placed on the side of the road to wait for another vehicle. Soon, a few Navy aircraft flew overhead, and instinctively every patient flung himself into a nearby ditch fearing an air attack. Incidents such as this revealed that for many returning veterans, coming home to a changed society was difficult. To aid them in the transition, the U.S. government passed the Serviceman's Readjustment Act of 1944, commonly known as the GI Bill of Rights. Today, this law continues to benifit military personnel. Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Sun Dial and Rock of Gibraltar" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media/Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Gibraltar Europa 1987 Modern Art - Architecture stamp issued February 17, 1987. Connected to the southern coast of Spain by an isthmus, Gibraltar has been a British possession since 1704. Because of its position at the eastern end of the Straits of Gibraltar, the tiny state has felt the influence of Great Britain, Spain, and Portugal on its architectural development. However, because of the dispute in 1966 between Great Britain and Spain regarding Gibraltar's political status, few new structures were planned or completed. Even before 1966, few of the nation's buildings or sculptures could be considered modern in twentieth century terms. Undoubtedly, the city of Gibraltar on the state's western coast displays the most modern achievements in Gibraltar's architecture. Confined mainly to housing development and tourist accommodations, the "new style" Gibraltar architecture reflects the continued influence of modern British design. Featured on this artwork is a northern view of the giant Sun Dial which sits near the base of the Rock of Gibraltar in the capital city. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c F-80 Shooting Star stamp issued November 10, 1995. Jack Fellows (American, B. 1941) "Granville Brothers Gee Bee Airplane" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Gee Bee stamp issued July 19, 1997. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, American airplane designers moved away from biplanes and began designing specialized high-performance monoplanes. With the hunger for speed, airframes grew smaller and their engines grew larger, the limit being reached with the creation of the Gee Bee Super Sportsters. The Gee Bee flown by Jimmy Doolittle in 1932 when he won the Thompson Trophy Race flying at 252.7 mph. Doolittle's brightly painted Gee Bee was powered by an 800-horsepower Wasp engine and had a wingspan of only 25 feet. When flown by less skilled pilots than Doolittle, these strange looking little planes were known to crash with disturbing frequency. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15.5 in. Unframed. With the exception of its sail -- which is made of contemporary material -- the craft's time-honored construction is authentic and true to history. Image Size: 16.5 x 24 in. Overall Size: 20 x 24 in. Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Israel" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.N. 20c Israel Flags of the U.N. Series stamp issued September 23, 1983. Although the people of this nation claim a history that dates back to biblical times, the Middle Eastern country of Israel is relatively young -- and is solving the problems of a new nation. In spite of poor natural resources, the economy of Israel has grown tremendously during the second half of the twentieth century. The Israeli people are meeting the challenges of today, a fact which is especially evident in the large, expanding cities of this ambitious nation. Spreading to the edge of the Mediterranean Sea is the city of Tel Aviv-Yafo . . . which is the country's busiest and largest city. Where the arid, scorching sands once ruled, now rows of modem apartment buildings reach high into the crystal azure of the desert sky. However, the Israeli interest in the modern world has not caused them to forget their past and their religious beliefs. The modern capital of Jerusalem is considered a holy city by several major world religions. Followers of the Jewish faith consider Jerusalem a holy city because it was their political and religious center during biblical times. Christians remember that Jesus was crucified here, and many other events of his life took place in and around Jerusalem. Muslims believe that the founder of Islam - Muhammed - rose to heaven from Jerusalem. With a deep commitment to the past and present, Israelis have great faith in their country and in themselves. Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Spain" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.N. 25c Spain Flags of the U.N. Series stamp issued September 14, 1988. A country of thirty-three million people, Spain is as diverse as its populace. A peninsula divided by many mountain ranges, Spain has always been home to a variety of cultures and regions. Once a great empire, this land has also served as a crossroad to conquest and to trade routes leading to riches. Thus, through history, Spain has been the scene of many wars, invasions and conflicts. Still, her people have developed a strong pride in their traditions. Today, they are proud of their common Spanish heritage, despite the regional differences. In remote villages of Catalonia along the Balearic Sea, in the three Basque Provinces, in the mountain country of Navarre, in northwestern Galicia and indeed throughout all Spain, the people share a sense of personal dignity and hold the qualities of honor and courage in highest esteem. The culture reflects it. Spanish art is often strong and bold, its native dances like the flamenco -- are fiery and determined. And, of course, the pastime for which Spain is known the world over -- the bull fight -- is a mirror of the passion and romance of the Spanish soul. Even in its architecture, Spain reflects centuries of pride. Its castles are so beautiful that daydreamers around the world are accused of "building castles in Spain." Today, Spanish cities are accented by the glories of the past as magnificent museums and fabulous monuments stand beside modern skyscrapers and industrial complexes. Image Size: 14.25 x 12.25 in. Shannon Stirnweis (Arizona, New York, New Hampshire Oregon, B. 1931) "Fort William" Original First Day Cover illustration painting. Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 32c Fort William stamp issue June 30, 1983. As early trappers and traders began to realize the natural bounty the New World had to offer them, they built fur trading posts and trading centers on the frontier. Many of these were located along the seacoast, rivers and lakes so that the trappers and traders could use the waterways to transport their wares. One such trading center was Fort William, located at Thunder Bay, an inlet on Lake Superior. The first white settlement at the site of Fort William was probably Dulhut's fur-trading post built in 1678. However, a more substantial French fort, Kaministikwia, was erected in 1717 and later abandoned after the Seven Years' War. After the war, Montreal traders used the Grand Portage-Pigeon River route south of Fort William to transport their wares. However, when the American border was set along the Pigeon River, the British traders rediscovered the French route to the west. Between 1801 and 1805, the English built a fort on Thunder Bay, naming it Fort William after William McGillivray, principal director of the North West Company. Fort William soon became the inland headquarters of the North West Company and served as a major trading depot for trading expeditions into the West. From 1802 until 1821, when the North West Company merged with the Hudson Bay Company, and the Nor'Westers, as the traders were called, met annually at Fort William. After 1821, the main trade route for the merged company was switched to Hudson Bay and Fort William became an obscure post. Image Size: 19.5 x 17 in. Overall Size: 23 x 19.75 in. Unframed. (B08178)

Tom McNeely (Canadian, B. 1935) "Monaco" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood Monaco Mint Stamp of the World Panel in 1986. The symbols of Monaco go back for hundreds of years, although there have been many variations depending in part on the prevailing artistic canons of the era. The central shield is a distinctive pattern of white and red lozenges, unique among national coats of arms. It is surrounded by the collar of the Order of St. Charles, the country's highest award. The background of the design features an ermine mantle or pavilion, fringed in gold and backed by red velvet, which is capped at the top by the princely crown. The two monks who act as supporters of the shield and the Latin motto Deo Juvante, meaning, "With God's Help," refer to the traditional story that the progenitors of the ruling Grimaldi family seized the fortress of Monaco by entering disguised as monks. The flag of the ruling prince is white with the coat of arms in the center; this flag is also used on government buildings and by the Monegasque diplomatic service. According to an old European heraldic practice, the national flag of Monaco contains stripes of the principal colors found on the shield. Elegantly simple, the flag of Monaco was officially adopted on April 4, 1881. Image Size: 24 x 15.75 in. Overall Size: 27.5 x 22 in. Unframed. (B10483)

Tom McNeely (Canadian, B. 1935) "U.S. Olympic Team with Flag" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Flag and Olympic Rings stamp issued April 21, 1991. In 1875 a group of German archeologists discovered the ruins of the Stadium of Olympia -- site of the ancient Greek Olympic games -- which had been buried by landslide many centuries earlier. Inspired by the discovery, French educator Pierre de Coubertin campaigned to organize modern Olympic games for the promotion of international goodwill and brotherhood. In 1894 members of an international symposium on amateur sports listened to de Courbertin's passionate plea and voted to form the first International Olympic Committee (IOC). Two years later Athens, Greece, hosted the first modern Olympic Games, which by 1924 included winter competition. Held every four years and interrupted only for World Wars I and II, the Olympic Games allow international amateur athletes to compete for the gold, silver and bronze medals which proclaim them the world's best. Five interlocking rings -- originally representing five continents -- comprise the Olympic symbol. The rings now stand for international friendship, and their colors incorporate at least one shade from the flags of every competing nation. The artwork salutes American participation in the games as a U.S. Olympic team member proudly carries Old Glory onto the playing field during the ceremonial parade of athletes.
