RAVEL MAURICE: (1875-1937) French Composer. An unusual autograph envelope signed ('Ravel') in the return address, addressed in the composer's hand to Madame Fernand Dreyfus in Paris. Signed by Ravel in the lower left corner in his capacity as a military lorry driver. Post marked at Paris to the verso, the date only partially legible, and with a circular Convois Automobile - Services Postal stamp to the recto, only very slightly affecting part of the address. Some very light, minor age wear, otherwise VG Madame Fernand Dreyfus - mother of Alexis Roland-Manuel (1891-1966) French Composer & Critic, a pupil, friend and biographer of Ravel. Ravel had joined the Thirteenth Artillery Regiment as a lorry driver in March 1915. Some of the duties the composer undertook in this role during World War I placed him in mortal danger, driving munitions at night under heavy German bombardment.

LA FONTAINE JEAN DE: (1621-1695) French Fabulist & Poet, known for his Fables. An extremely rare D.S., De la Fontaine, one page, 8vo, n.p., 28th September 1656, in French. The boldly penned holograph document is a receipt in which the poet acknowledges the receipt of 'thirty three silver coins' worth of mixed woods to use during year one thousand six hundred and fifty-seven, with sixty-six pounds paid for my entry and exit rights' from Claude Lamblet, residing in Igny, and further stating 'I hold him good for the thirty-three silver coins and all the rest'. With integral leaf bearing a few ink calculations in an unidentified hand. Three neat ink annotations at the head of the page and a red circular stamp to a clear area of the lower half of the page. TITANIC: STEAD WILLIAM T. (1849-1912) English Newspaper Editor, a pioneer of investigative journalism. Stead died during the sinking of the RMS Titanic. Vintage signed postcard photograph of Stead in a head and shoulders pose. Signed ('William T Stead') in fountain pen ink to the lower white border and dated May 1907 in his hand. Some very light silvering and minor age wear to the image. Together with a 6 x 4 postcard featuring an oval colour image of the Titanic, issued as a souvenir of the philatelic Capex 1996 sheet, Turks and Caicos Islands, 13th May 1996 (bearing a large colour postage stamp and postmark to the verso) individually signed by the Titanic survivors Millvina Dean, Eleanor Shuman and Michel Navratil. All have signed in bold black inks to the white borders, Shuman adding Titanic Survivor in her hand beneath her signature. VG, 2

The holograph document is a promissory note addressed to Messrs. John Ballantyne & Co. of Edinburgh and states 'Three months after date pay to my order the sum of One hundred & seventy five pounds value in acct.' With blind embossed revenue stamp to the upper left corner. A few ink annotations and ink stroke marks, as a form of cancellation, only very slightly affect the text but not the signature. [MARY OF TECK]: (1867-1953) Queen Consort of the United Kingdom 1910-36, wife of King George V. A good pair of vintage unsigned cabinet photographs by F. W. Ralph of Sandringham, the first depicting the Princess seated in a three quarter length pose with her infant son Prince Edward of York (who had been born on 23rd June 1894) seated in a full length pose on her knees, and the second showing the Princess seated in a three quarter length pose with her infant son Prince Albert of York (who had been born on 14th December 1895) lying in a full length pose on her lap. The first photograph with photographer's purple ink credit stamp to the lower mount and the second with photographer's imprint to the lower mount and both with plain versos. About EX, 2 The present images depict Queen Mary with two future Kings of England - King Edward VIII (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor, and King George VI (1895-1952) King of the United Kingdom 1936-52.

Jourdan sends his correspondent the results (no longer present) from the Inspection Review carried out by the Marshal of the Aigremont Corps, Commanding the Department of the Somme, of the 7th Regiment of Curassiers stationed at Abbeville and continues to remark 'Your Excellency will note that this work shows no soldier eligible for the retirement payment or veteran status and consigns the men to the reform with a view to the awaited indemnity payment...' An unusual T.L.S., A Hitler, one page, 4to, Berlin, 28th March 1939, to Alfred Evers, on Hitler's personal gold printed stationery featuring the Nazi eagle and swastika, in German. Hitler writes, in full, 'Your request for me to assume the position of honorary guardianship for your ninth child, born on the 11th February, 1939, was put to me today. I am happy to fulfil this request, and to assume the honorary guardianship of your daughter, Adolfine, whom I wish every success in her future life'. With blank integral leaf. NIVEN DAVID: (1910-1983) British Actor, Academy Award winner. A.L.S., David, additionally signing his name David Niven a further six times at the conclusion, two pages, 4to, Hollywood, California, 10th February n.y. (1938), to Miss Stella Jean Conway-Gordon. Niven states that he was glad to hear from his correspondent and continues 'Yes I do enjoy film work very much, and as you seem interested I have just finished “Dinner at the Ritz” with Annabella which should be on in England soon. Also “Blue Beards Eighth Wife” with Claudette [Colbert] and Gary Cooper….' Niven further writes 'Please give my very best love to your Mummy and Daddy, I so often think of the old days in the Regiment when they were so kind to me' and concludes 'Don't over work at school, I never did!!'. At the foot of the letter Niven states 'Here are some autographs!!' and boldly signs his name six times. Evidently a seventh signature originally appeared in the left corner and has been neatly clipped away, with loss of a few words of text to the main body of the letter. Accompanied by the original envelope (stamp torn away) hand addressed by Niven. About VG
