He holds the seismometer in his left hand and the LRRR (Laser Ranging Retro-Reflector) in his right hand. The scientific experiments had to be deployed far away enough so that they would not be damaged by the ascent stage rocket when the Eagle lifted off. In the one sixth gravity of the lunar surface, Aldrin had to manoeuvre through an area covered with fragments of broken rock near a small crater (foreground) to find a level spot on which to put the LRRR. Aldrin set up the LRRR about 14 m south-southwest of the LM and the seismometer a bit farther out from the LM (19 m).

Mercury Atlas 9 was launched from Cape Canaveral's Pad 14 on May 15, 1963 with a perigee of 161 km and an apogee of 267 km. Gordon Cooper's Faith 7 mission was the high point of Project Mercury and the first one-day mission and the last solo flight of the US space program. Faith 7 completed 22 orbits to evaluate effects of one day in space.

Gemini 6A was originally planned to dock with the uncrewed Gemini-Agena target vehicle but as the vehicle failed to launch, NASA flight directors decided to reschedule the rendezvous with Gemini 6a and the upcoming Gemini 7. Once Gemini 6A achieved orbit, the spacecraft caught up to Gemini 7 and the two ships manoeuvred to within a few feet of each other during three Earth orbits. McDonnell Aircraft Corporation was NASA's prime contractor for the Gemini spacecraft.
