Julia M. Massie (Mississippi/New Orleans, 1869-1949), "A Glimpse of a Country House", oil on canvas, signed lower right, signed and titled on label, New Orleans frame shop stamp, and inscribed on stretcher en verso, 10 in. x 16 in., period gilt frame. Note: In 1898 the New Orleans Daily States newspaper proclaimed Julia M. Massie to be one of the city`s leading artists whose work was praised "both at home and abroad". Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Massie`s family moved to New Orleans when she was a child. As a promising young artist, Massie studied art with local artists Paul Poincy, Andres Molinary and Bror Anders Wikstrom at the Artists` Association of New Orleans. The charming painting "A Glimpse of a Country House" reveals her talent as a landscape painter and is inscribed with her uptown New Orleans address of 5919 Tchoupitoulas on the back of the stretcher
