Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Collage of Police Transportation" Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 11 1/2P Traffic Police Mammoth stamp issued September 26, 1979. The history of the British Police Force is nearly as old as England itself. In 1066, when the Normans conquered England, a system of public protection and safety was established. In this system, men sixteen years old and over were required to stand watch and ward duty for their town. On such assignments the men questioned travelers who were on the road after nightfall and held suspicious persons in custody. They also patrolled the streets to quiet disturbances and prevent crime. If a crime was committed, all able-bodied men joined with the men on watch in a hue and cry, or a chase to capture the suspect. As towns grew, the policing systems also became larger and more organized. By 1800, London had its own special police to guard the docks, the marketplace, and other selected locations. In 1829, Londoner Sir Robert Peel organized the London Metropolitan Police, a body of trained and paid policemen who guarded the city both by day and by night. Named after their founder, these officers were soon known throughout London as "bobbies" or "peelers." The name stuck and to this day, the Metropolitan Police Force is referred to by the name "bobbies." Today, this force is a far cry from that of the early days. It is a league of professional crime fighters and dedicated public servants, skilled in modern police procedures. Image Size: 12.25 x 14 in. Overall Size: 15 x 22 in. Unframed. (B05331)

Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Lancaster Bombers sink German Battleship Tirpitz" Artist notes in margins. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c German Battleship Tirpitz Sunk 1944 Avro Lancaster stamp issued November 12, 1994. After the Tirpitz was damaged by one of many British bombing attacks, Germany's naval commander, Grand Admiral Karl D?nitz, felt it was no longer feasible to repair his last battleship. Deciding to use her as a floating battery to defend part of the Norwegian coast against a possible Allied invasion, D?nitz ordered the Tirpitz to be moved 200 miles south to a new berth off Haakoy Island near the port of Tromso. Here, however, the mammoth battleship was at last within range of specially modified British Lancaster bombers. On November 12, 1944, 32 Lancasters managed to drop 29 "Tallboy" bombs on the ship. The Tirpitz heeled over and minutes later her magazine exploded. Soon afterward, the great battleship capsized and sank. Image Size: 13.5 x 16.25 in. Overall Size: 16.5 x 19.5 in. Unframed. (B14851)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Allies Invade Sicily" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Sicily Attacked by Allied Forces World War II Series stamp issued May 31, 1993. The first Allied invasion of an Axis homeland came on July 10, 1943, when the U.S. and Britain raided Sicily. The evening before, Allied parachutists had descended on the island to disrupt communications and occupy airfields. The next morning they were joined by approximately 2,500 ships carrying 181,000 soldiers. The invading troops disembarked on five beaches along Sicily's southern coast. Initially, they saw little to hinder their progress. The Allied forces had come from the south and east, not from the west as the Germans had anticipated. Attacks by German Panzer divisions were repelled and the Italian forces retreated. Germany responded by dispatching planes and tanks to the area, but they were swiftly bombarded by the offshore armada. By the evening of July 11th, the Allies had brought 80,000 troops and 8,000 vehicles ashore, only to be faced with another enemy. Rugged terrain covered by deep stream beds and steep, narrow roads made tank travel sluggish and painstaking. General Montgomery's 8th Army forged over Sicily's east coast to capture the city of Syracuse. Meanwhile, General Patton's 7th Army had landed at the southern coastal towns of Gela and Licata. Patton's troops proceeded to "go like Hell," reaching the northern town of Palermo within two weeks. By July 30, America and Britain had linked forces. Together, they took Messina, completing their capture of Sicily on August 17. The success of the offensive was considered a key factor in Mussolini's fall from power. Image Size: 16.5 x 12.25 in. Overall Size: 23.25 x 18.5 in. Unframed. (B14082)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Bighorn Sheep" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.N. 34c Bighorn Sheep stamp issued April 4, 2002. The beautiful and majestic Bighorn Sheep inhabits the Rocky Mountains in North America from southern Canada to Colorado and is also found as a desert subspecies from Nevada, California and west Texas, extending south into Mexico. Classified Ovis canadensis, the Bighorn Sheep has excellent eyesight, a thick muscular body, and a dense coat that provides warmth at high elevations. Skillful climbers and jumpers, they navigate easily through steep, rugged terrain as they follow narrow mountainside trails. Bighorn Sheep migrate between high mountain slopes in the summer and foothill slopes in winter. The adult male is called a ram, and displays large ridged horns that curve backward, spiraling to encircle the ear. The horns continue to grow throughout the animal's life -- in fact, horns are a symbol of rank, with older, dominant males sporting larger curls. During the fall rutting season, rams engage in butting contests in which they charge at each other at speeds in excess of 20 mph. The sharp crack of their massive horns colliding can be heard more than a mile away. These animals feed on a variety of indigenous vegetation like grasses and sedges, and in winter, when plants are dormant, they forage among willows, shrubs, forbs, sage, bearberry, rose and other woody plants. They get their water from melted snow and mountain pools. Human encroachment upon its habitat is the greatest threat to the survival of Bighorn Sheep. Image Size: 10.5 x 9 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B16977)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Chancellorsville" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 32c Battle of Chancellorsville Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 29, 1995. After the Battle of Fredericksburg, when General Ambrose E. Burnside attacked Robert E. Lee on Virginia's Rappahannock River, Burnside was relieved of command at his own request. Replacing him as commander of the Army of the Potomac was General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker. On April 27, 1863, Hooker sent his force of 120,000 men against Lee's army of only 60,000 men, still holding the Rappahannock line. Hooker's plan was to engage Lee's attention at Fredericksburg, then send another force around the town to attack the Confederate flank. The two pincers would try to isolate and crush the Army of Northern Virginia. But Hooker's right wing force had to march through a thickly wooded area making it vulnerable to surprise attack. Alert to Hooker's strategy, Lee left a screening force to protect his right flank at Fredericksburg and attacked Hooker straight on, at the same time sending General Stonewall Jackson to strike at the Union right. Jackson's savage attack from the pine thickets on May 2, at the crossroads junction known as Chancellorsville, caught the Northern army by surprise. After battling for three days across a 10-mile area, Hooker retreated. Union casualties were over 17,000, while the Confederate cost was 12,800. For Lee, his greatest victory was sadly Pyrrhic, since Jackson was mortally wounded by his own men. Nevertheless, Lee decided to launch a second invasion of the North, hoping to capture an important city like Harrisburg or Baltimore and possibly effect a triumphant peace. Image Size: 14 x 13.5 in. Overall Size: 23 x 18 in. Unframed. (B15196)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Life of Sun Yat-sen - Revolution" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands Life of Sun Yat-sen 60c Revolution stamp issued November 12, 2000. On October 10, 1911, an explosion in a house in Wuchang province, China occurred. When police investigated they discovered an arsenal of grenades and a list of members of an illegal revolutionary party. The incriminating list contained the names of important army officers stationed nearby. The policemen realized their danger and decided to join the revolt. The tri-cities of Wuhan, one of the country's most important urban areas, were taken without a shot being fired. Sun Yat-sen was traveling abroad in the United States raising financial and political support when he read of the successful revolt in a Denver newspaper. Huang Hsing, Sun's deputy, assumed command of the revolution. Across southern China, one province after another joined the movement. Remarkably, the revolution was met by little violence and bloodshed. Sun returned to China in triumph on Christmas Day, 1911. Image Size: 10.5 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 11.5 x 17.5 in. Unframed. Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "WWII - Pearl Harbor Attacked" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was used on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 29c Japanese Bomb Pearl Harbor, December 7 stamp issued September 3, 1991. The morning of December 7, 1941 was like so many in the tropics ... quiet, almost lazy -- a Sunday. But less than two hours after dawn, it became a Sunday like no other. Before many of the American servicemen stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, had risen, the harbor and surrounding fields were under enemy air attack. The surprise was universal. The Japanese launched over one hundred eighty airplanes in the first wave from a point two hundred thirty miles north of Oahu. Striking with deadly efficiency, the planes hit Wheeler, Hickam and Bellows fields and pounded into American battleships anchored off Ford Island in Pearl Harbor. So shocking was this initial attack that only nine enemy planes were shot out of the once-serene tropical sky. The next wave came less than an hour later, pounding into crippled battleships and destroying grounded American aircraft. With one well-planned and flawlessly executed blow, the Japanese sent American naval power reeling. The carnage was incredible: 2,403 American men and women were killed; the battleships U.S.S. Arizona, U.S.S. West Virginia, U.S.S. California, U.S.S. Utah and U.S.S. Oklahoma were knocked out of action; and only one quarter of the American aircraft were undamaged. It was a day which spurred the industrial might of a nation into action and sent United States servicemen into the arena of World War II. Image Size: 12.25 x 21.25 in. Overall Size: 19.75 x 23.25 in. Unframed. (B13090)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "WWII - U.S. Declares War on Japan" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was used on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c U.S. Declares War on Japan, December 8 stamp issued September 3, 1991. "Yesterday, December 7, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." With these immortal words, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt appeared before a joint session of Congress on December 8, 1941. In a pointed, moving speech, Roosevelt, drawn and haggard from a night with little sleep, continued: "I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire." Only thirty-three minutes later, Congress passed a declaration of war with Japan. That same day, a resolute FDR signed the declaration and America entered the Second World War. Surprisingly, Roosevelt's words were a little different in the first draft of the Congress message. After the initial draft, the words "... a date which will live in world history" were changed to the famous and more powerful "... a date which will live in infamy. Regardless, the effect of the attack and Roosevelt's speech was unforgettable: Recruiting stations were packed with men wishing to enter the Armed Forces and angry cries for revenge swept across the country. From that day forward, Americans would not rest in their drive to free the world. Image Size: 16.5 x 12 in. Overall Size: 23.25 x 20 in. Unframed. (B13108)

David K Stone (Oregon, 1922 - 2001) "Surrender of Bataan and Death March" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Surrender at Bataan/Death March 1942 stamp issued April 9, 1992. By December 24, 1941, more than 60,000 Japanese troops were positioned near the Philippine capital of Manila. U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur withdrew his combined American and Filipino forces to the Bataan Peninsula and settled in for a siege. Ill with malaria and dysentery, the soldiers grew steadily weaker on their diet of dog, iguana, roots and berries. Ordered to Australia in March of 1942, MacArthur passed command to Gen. Jonathan Wainwright. On April 8, Wainwright and a small force withdrew to Corregidor. The following day, the 35,000 men left on Bataan surrendered and six days later were forced to trek 60 miles for transport to prison compounds. At least 10,000 men died on the Bataan Death March, victims of heat, starvation, heinous torture and execution. Image Size: 25 x 15.5 in. Overall Size: 27 x 24 in. Unframed. (B13719)

Dean Ellis (New York, 1920 - 2009) "British Captain John Marshall" Original Tempera painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55c British Captain John Marshall Charts Islands, 1788 stamp issued May 2, 1996. By the late 18th century, the Pacific region had witnessed the rise and fall of the Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch. Then Great Britain began to take its place in the Sun both commercially and politically. In the 1780s, numerous British naval vessels and merchantmen of the British East India Company were stopping over in the Central Pacific islands on their way to China. The British First Fleet arrived in Australia in 1788 carrying a cargo of 700 convicts destined for the penal colony to be established there. Having discharged the prisoners, the First Fleet dispersed, with most ships striking north toward China. However, Captain John Marshall, commanding the Scarborough, sailed east on a course that would take him through the archipelago that he charted, and which now bears his name -- the Marshall Islands. Dean Ellis (1920 - 2009) "Life of JFK / Inception of Peace Corp" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the First Day Cover for the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55c Peace Corps stamp issued May 29, 1995. When Kennedy later spoke to Congress, the idea had crystallized: "I recommend to the Congress the establishment of a permanent Peace Corps, a pool of trained American men and women sent overseas by the U.S. Government or through private organizations and institutions to help foreign countries meet their urgent needs for skilled manpower. The initial emphasis of these programs will be on teaching." Kennedy went onto say that he opened other countries would join his cause and improve understanding among nations." Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Forster Flag" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Canvas board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 33c Forster Flag Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 14, 2000. The American Revolution began on April 19, 1775, when Minutemen and redcoats engaged in battle for the first time at Lexington and Concord. British general Thomas Gage had ordered his army to secretly destroy an American supply depot at Concord, Massachusetts. When Joseph Warren, a Boston doctor, found out about the plans, he sent patriot leaders Paul Revere and William Dawes to ride the 16 miles from Boston to Lexington on the road to Concord and arouse the colonists. The British army arrived in Lexington at dawn on April 19, 1775. They were met by Captain John Parker and his band of Minutemen on the village green. No one knows which side fired the first shot, but several colonists were killed. The British continued marching toward Concord, where they destroyed the targeted military stores. The shots fired at Lexington had aroused the colonists in the area, who joined the Minutemen and drove the British out of Concord and back to Boston. The Forster flag is a British flag that was reportedly captured by the Minutemen on April 19, 1775 -- the historic day that marked the beginning of the American Revolution. Image Size: 18 x 13 in. Overall Size: 19.5 x 15 in. Unframed. (B16782)

Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Great Star Flag" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 33c Great Star Flag Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 14, 2000. In 1790, Rhode Island joined the Union -- the last of the original 13 colonies to become a state. The American flag proudly displayed a field of 13 red and white stripes, and 13 white stars on a blue canton. By 1794, two new states had joined the Union -- Vermont and Kentucky -- and Congress voted to add two stars and two stripes, making a 15-stars-and-stripes flag. By 1817, five more states had joined the Union. The flag would be too cluttered if a star and stripe were added for each new state, making a 20-stars-and-stripes design. Navy captain and hero of the War of 1812, Samuel Chester Reid proposed a flag design comprising 13 alternate red and white stripes, representing the 13 original colonies, and a blue canton with a star for each state. This design would allow Congress to easily add new stars to the flag without altering the overall pattern. On April 4, 1818, Congress voted to accept Reid's flag design. For every new state that joined the Union, a star would be added to the flag on the following July 4th. Because Congress did not specify how the stars should be arranged, flagmakers experimented with various designs. The Great Star flag of 1818 had 20 stars arranged in the form of a five-pointed star. Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Cottontail Bunnies" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 20c Smokey Bear stamp block issued August 13, 1984. Underneath the waving boughs of a tall oak tree is a female rabbit, called a doe, busying herself with the construction of a nest. Sometimes, she will find an abandoned skunk nest or other depression in the earth . . . and other times she will paw into the ground herself to form a suitable hole. Then she lines the nest with soft warm fur from her underbelly and straw from the surrounding meadows and fields to make a soft and snug resting place for her newborn bunnies. The proud mother gives birth to a half a dozen or so babies -- which are born with their eyes closed, naked and helpless. During the days that follow, the mother scampers about near the nursery, munching on tender grasses and buds, so she may return in the evening to nurse her ravenous bunnies. Within eight days the bunnies open their eyes . . . and only two weeks after birth they venture out into the world, eager to explore the forest. The bunnies curiously nose a butterfly. Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Mountain Goat" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Wildlife of the 50 States 22c Mountain Goat/Washington stamp issued June 13, 1987. A breathtaking sight as they stand precariously at the edge of a precipice, Mountain Goats have a certain grace about them as they play king-of-the-hill among America's most remote peaks. Here, in the most remote retreats of the mountains, they scale incredible heights, jumping from precipice to precipice with sure-footed grace. Their rough-padded hooves, split into two spreadable toes, are perfectly suited to the rugged, precipitous mountain environment. Both nannies and billies sport beards and fleecy long shaggy outer coats that protect them from the wind. They are easily distinguished from their close relatives, the Big Horn Sheep, by long, thick, black horns which grow straight up, then curve back. Billies, who generally travel alone or in groups of two or three, become rivals at mating time, occasionally butting each other, but behaving gently, almost reverently, toward the female. By late spring the kids are born. The young Goats usually weigh about seven pounds at birth and within a half an hour can jump from rock to rock. During that time, they must learn about finding shelter and food in the hostile alpine environment. Image Size: 11 x 10.5 in. Overall Size: 20 x 19.5 in. Unframed. (B10877)

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Hummingbird" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Wildlife of the 50 States 22c Hummingbird/Ohio stamp issued June 13, 1987. One of the great pleasures of a summer's day is the sight of a Hummingbird sipping eagerly from lush, full blooms. Hovering gracefully above the garden flowers, the lovely little Hummingbird sips deeply of the blossom's sweet nectar, deriving energy from its sugar, and protein from tiny insects found therein. These feeding flights account for its amazing activity rate and its seemingly nonstop action as it flits from meal to meal. The Hummingbird has the fascinating ability to fly forward or backward or even to hover in mid-air, as it beats its wings furiously some eighty times a second. This beating produces the "hum" referred to in its name. Tiny in size, the Hummingbird displays tremendous endurance and stamina and some migrate all the way to Central America each winter for sustenance in the warmer climates. Breeding occurs in the north in woven nests built with care and precision. Within these nests females nurture their young which mature quickly. The several Hummingbird species indigenous to North America are scattered across a wide range. Image Size: 13.5 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 14 x 17 in. Unframed. (B11076)

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Equal Rights Graphic Design" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media/Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Germany 80pf Equal Rights stamp issued November 8, 1984. In 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Martha C. Wright and Mary Ann McClintock organized the Seneca Falls Convention in New York to discuss women's rights. At this meeting, 68 women and 32 men drafted and signed the Declaration of Principles. This document, which was patterned after the Declaration of Independence, stated, "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are equal..." In 1852, Stanton worked with Susan B. Anthony to organize another convention, which marked the beginning of this powerful duo's contribution to women's rights. Together they established the National Woman Suffrage Association, and worked for over 50 years to gain equality for women. In 1878 and again in 1914, Constitutional amendments giving women the right to vote were attempted, but failed to pass Congress. Disappointed but not defeated, American women continued to pursue their ultimate goal of passing legislation to change the U.S. Constitution to allow them the right to vote. Women's contributions during World War I helped to reverse Congress' position on the 19th amendment. The House of Representatives passed the amendment on January 10, 1918, by a vote of 274 to 136. By June 4, 1919, the Senate had passed the amendment 66 to 30. On August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment, giving it the necessary two-thirds majority vote from the states. Finally, on August 26, 1920, the 19th amendment was proclaimed part of the United States Constitution. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 15 x 20 in. Unframed. (B09228)

Gherman Alexeyvich Komlev (Russian, 1933 - 2000) "Hardships of Emigration" Signed lower right. Original Oil on Canvas laid on Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 10c Trans-Mississippi stamp issued June 18, 1998. Traveling 15 miles a day with pack animals, 2-wheel carts or wagons, emigrant families sometimes took over four months to reach the Far West. Top-heavy covered wagons faced many risks: blowing over in strong prairie winds, being knocked over by mountain rocks, getting mired in river mud or sinking to the hubs in desert sand. On the positive side, these "prairie schooners" provided shelter from drenching rainstorms and the scorching sun as they navigated the seemingly endless seas of prairie grass. Broken wagons, putrefying mule, oxen and horse carcasses, and shallow, hastily-dug human graves littered the way west -- testament to the hardships endured by the families that preceded them. Some estimates hold that 1 of every 17 emigrants who started the journey west ended up buried alongside the trail. A mother's diary of her trip paints a vivid portrait of the daily challenges faced by emigrants. "We are creeping along slowly, one wagon after another, out of one mud hole and into another all day ... Them that eat the most breakfast eat the most sand ... It has been raining all day long. The men and boys are all soaking wet and look sad and comfortless. The little ones and myself are shut up in the wagons from the rain ... Lost one of our oxen; he dropped dead in the yoke. I could hardly help shedding tears ... I was sick all night and not able to get out of the wagon in the morning ... Yesterday my eighth child was born ... Take us all together we are a poor looking set, and all this for Oregon." Image Size: 10 x 20.5 in. Overall Size: 12.75 x 22.75 in. Unframed. (B16013)

Gordon Beningfield (British, 1936 - 1998) "Sweet White Violet" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Sweet White Violet stamp issued July 24, 1992. Sweet white violet is one of the smallest and most fragrant species of Viola. Prized for their sweet, delicate scents, violets have been used in perfumes and colognes for centuries. A bouquet of violets supposedly influences the recipient's thoughts. Found in rich, deciduous woods, the sweet white violet blooms from April to May. The dainty white flowers, attached to reddish stalks, are marked with purple veins on the lower petals. Butterflies and bees help fertilize the flowers. Fritillary butterflies also feed on the leaves. The tufts of hair or "beards" on the petals of many violets protect the flowers from crawling insects such as ants; only insects with long tongues can reach the nectar in the spurs of the petals. During a second spurt of growth in late summer, the leaves become mottled with light and dark green coloration. The plant produces more flowers, but these remain hidden and closed, and fertilize themselves without the need for insects. Image Size: 7 x 6 in. Overall Size: 11.5 x 10.5 in. Unframed. (B13145)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Claret Cup Cactus stamp issued July 24, 1992. A member of one of the largest genera of cacti -- Echinocereus -- claret cup cactus occurs in dry, rocky soils of deserts, hillsides and woodlands in the Southwest and southern Rocky Mountains. Because characteristics such as stem sizes and the number and length of spines vary considerably among populations of claret cup cactus in different regions, botanists have designated many varieties within this species. The genus name, which comes from the Greek words echinos -- spiny -- and cereus -- waxy candle -- aptly describes the appearance of its slender, spinecovered stems. Another common name for members of this genus is hedgehog cactus. The branched stems of claret cup cactus form mounds from one to four feet in diameter. When covered with blossoms, usually from April to July, the scarlet mounds add a striking splash of color to dry desert landscapes. Because of their waxy coating, the blossoms often last for a week or more. Image Size: 7 x 6 in. Overall Size: 11.5 x 10.5 in. Unframed. (B13146)

J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "Canadian Pacific "Royal Hudson" Signed lower right. Original Oil on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands First Day Cover for the 55c Canadian Pacific "Royal Hudson" stamp issued August 23, 1996. In 1939 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited Canada and traveled on a 12-car Royal Train pulled by Canadian Pacific Railway steam locomotive Number 2850. After Canada's royal guests returned to England, CPR christened its 45 engines of that class "Royal Hudsons." Built by Montreal Locomotive Works from 1937 to 1940, the first 40 "Royal Hudsons" burned coal, while the remaining five engines were oil-fired. "Royal Hudsons," comprising the H1c, H1d and the H1e distinguished themselves from earlier Hudsons by their semi-streamlined design. Another distinctive feature of "Royal Hudsons" was the inclusion of cast metal royal crown replicas in their decor. Each engine had two crowns -- one mounted on the running-board skirt on each side of the locomotive, just above the cylinders. The last run of a "Royal Hudson" in regular service was in 1960. Only four of the original 45 engines have survived as museum pieces. "Royal Hudson" No. 2860 is in operating condition and runs tourist excursions out of North Vancouver, British Columbia, on the British Columbia Railway. Image Size: 10 x 13 in. Overall Size: 13.5 x 17.75 in. Unframed. (B15432)

This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c F-4 Phantom II stamp issued August 28, 1998. The F-4 Phantom II was the U.S. Navy's first fighter plane to operate without conventional guns, carrying only missiles for armament. In addition, the Phantom was the first fighter to employ a radar that enabled it to detect and destroy any target within range without benefit of ground control. Image Size: 16.5 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 18 x 15.5 in. Unframed. (B16031)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 33c FJ-1 Fury stamp issued February 10, 2000. In late World War II, the U.S. Navy developed its first carrier jet fighter, the North American FJ-1 Fury. Redesigned with swept wings as the F-86 Sabre, this plane went on to become a highly-successful Navy carrier fighter and the world's most successful land-based fighter of the 1950s. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 18.5 x 16 in. Unframed. (B13859)

Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Boy Scouts" Watercolor on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain Boy Scouts stamp issued March 24, 1982. Probably the world's most famous youth movement is the 1982 marked its 75th anniversary and anniversary of the birth of its founder, Robert Baden-Powell. By the year 1908, Powell's experiences in the British Army convinced him that British boys needed far more physical training and experience in outdoor life. Having previously written a military manual for British recruits called "Aids to Scouting," Powell decided to rewrite his manual for younger readership. The new version, entitled Scouting for Boys, became a tremendous success. Practically overnight, thousands of Scout Patrols sprang up throughout Britain to try out Powell's fun and adventurous ideas. Powell's original intention was that Scouting should be for boys between the ages of eleven and eighteen. But younger boys, seeing the fun and adventure older brothers and friends were having as Boy Scouts, began asking to join too. Thus, in 1914 Powell announced his plans for "Junior Scouts," since changed to Cub Scouts, to include boys under eleven years of age. Since then, numerous other sub-groups of the prestigious Scout movement have been added. And today, the excitement and magic of Scouting has never been stronger, for there are now over fifteen million Scouts, ages eight to twenty, around the world, with well over 650,000 in the United Kingdom alone! Image Size: 12 x 14.25 in. Overall Size: 13.75 x 19 in. Unframed. (B06249)

Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Warsaw Uprising" Artist notes in margins. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Warsaw Uprising 1944 stamp issued August 1, 1994. During World War II, Poland suffered at the hands of the Soviets while being targeted for some of Nazi Germany's worst atrocities as well. Starting with the Luftwaffe attack on Warsaw during the first days of World War II, Polish citizens continually rallied to defend their homeland. Since early 1940, Poland's Home Army -- an underground group of Polish freedom fighters -- had been planning an uprising against the Germans. Encouraged by Russia, the Home Army went forward with its rebellion against German forces on August 1, 1944. However, the Poles were a poor match for the heavily-armed German army. After 63 days of fighting, about 83 percent of Warsaw had been destroyed, and an estimated 18,000 Polish insurgents and some 200,000 civilians had perished. Image Size: 13.5 x 16.5 in. Overall Size: 17.5 x 20.5 in. Unframed. (B14777)

Dean Ellis (New York, 1920 - 2009) "Roman God Mars" Signed lower right. Original oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Mars stamp issued July 20, 1994. Named for the Roman god of war -- the legendary father of Romulus and Remus through Rhea Silvia -- the planet Mars has a brilliant red color that symbolizes fire and blood. Ancient philosophers believed this planet to be the cause of dissension, strife, quarrels and battles. A number of space missions to Mars have made the planet nearly as familiar to us as the Moon. Huge dust storms occur there, causing wind erosion and sedimentation. Although water doesn't exist on Mars as a liquid, large amounts of ice cover its north pole. Seasons on the red planet are twice as long as those on Earth because the Martian orbital period is two years. This spectacular painting depicts Mars' astrological sign symbolizing courage and invincibility, and captures the Roman god Mars with a spear and shield about to go into battle. Image Size: 12.75 x 15.75 in. Overall Size: 15.75 x 18.75 in. Unframed. (B14594)

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Gray Wolf" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Wildlife of the 50 States 22c Gray Wolf/Minnesota stamp issued June 13, 1987. The Gray Wolf -- or Timber Wolf -- is, perhaps, one of the least understood and most controversial canines. The largest member of the dog family, fictional accounts of their viciousness and ruthlessness have caused them to be feared and hunted by man. Contrary to its name, the Gray Wolf's shaggy fur is a mixture of colors including white, black and red. Gray Wolves are primarily pack animals with eight individuals from a single family making up the pack. During winter when food is scarce, several packs may band together under the leadership of the strongest male. Gray Wolves prey primarily upon the larger mammals in their territory -- including moose, deer and caribou. They will also stalk smaller animals including rabbits, mice and ground squirrels as the opportunity presents itself. Studies indicate that Gray Wolves tend to take very old, weak or injured prey. Thus, their predatory behavior may result in healthier herds, particularly in places where a good natural balance exists between the number of Wolves and the number of prey animals. Once, the Gray Wolf roamed throughout the forests and woodlands of much of North America. Today however a dwindling number survive in the wild. Image Size: 11 x 10.5 in. Overall Size: 19.5 x 20 in. Unframed. (B10708)

Shannon Stirnweis (B. 1931) "Remagen Bridge Taken by U.S. Forces" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c Remagen Bridge Taken by U.S. Forces 1945 stamp issued March 7, 1995. As Anglo-American forces pushed into the heart of Germany, Adolf Hitler ordered that all bridges over the Rhine River be razed to hinder their progress -- but not until the Allies were within 12 miles. Thus, instead of immediately lining the Remagen railroad bridge with explosives, the Germans covered it with planks to expedite their retreat. When U.S. troops unexpectedly arrived early on the afternoon of March 7, 1945, the Germans had just started to prepare the bridge for demolition. Seeing it intact, U.S. Army troops under Lieutenant Karl H. Timmermann charged the span, cutting everything that resembled a demolition cable. Two hasty German attempts to destroy the bridge failed. One merely blew a crater at its western end, the second raised the bridge a few feet but it settled back into place. By 4:15 p.m., the Americans were in firm control of a vital crossing over the Rhine. Image Size: 19.75 x 23.75 in. Overall Size: 21.75 x 25.75 in. Unframed. (B14952)

Stanley Paine (British, B. 1934) "Model T Ford" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 19 1/2p Model T & Escort Ford stamp issued October 13, 1982. The Ford Model T, known affectionately as the "Tin Lizzie," was a simple, sturdy and utilitarian car. Like many of the people who owned it, it was also practical and hardworking. During the eighteen years, from 1909 through 1926, that the Model T was being produced, its share of the automobile industry's total output averaged an amazing 42.9 per cent. In six of those years, production of this classic car topped fifty per cent of total cars produced. The Model T was the car that introduced millions of Americans to the auto age, which in large part explains the folklore and nostalgia that surrounds this famous automobile. Many Americans can still remember their proud first day behind the wheel of their Model T. Countless photographs of parents and children posed around the Model T tell of its importance to the American family. Indeed, every owner had a favorite story to relate about the Model T and at least two home remedies telling how to start the car on a winter's morning. Some drivers put their cars up on blocks the moment the snow fell. The less thrifty might invest five dollars in a Simon Primer, an electrically heated manifold. The Model T was always painted black. It always had a four cylinder, water-cooled engine and a two-speed gearbox with reverse. In 1914, Ford opened a factory in Manchester to produce the Model T. Although the car that had won America's heart was popular in Britain, it was never the success there that it had been in its homeland. Image Size: 6 x 7 in. Overall Size: 11.75 x 13 in. Unframed. Mark Schuler (American, B. 1951) "European Remote Sensing Satellite" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 22p Europe in Space stamp issued April 23, 1991. Water covers more than seventy percent of the Earth's surface, providing means of transportation and livelihoods to millions of inhabitants. The oceans' sheer volume and impact on the planet's ecosystems have generated decades of scientific study. The polar ice caps -- their stability and effect on surrounding waters -- are the focal point of continual scientific research as well. To provide more sophisticated satellite systems for ocean, coastal, ice and meteorological applications, the European Space Agency (ESA) has developed its first remote-sensing satellite -- the ERS 1. Its mission will be to enhance scientific understanding of and collect data on global ocean processes, including effects on coastal zones and ice regions. Such data will be used to define and develop offshore oil activities, fisheries and maritime navigation while monitoring pollution. Two planned missions in the early 1990s will provide the ESA with data for five to six years. This artwork depicts the ERS 1 high above a polar ice cap. Image Size: 14.5 x 12.5 in. Overall Size: 20 x 18 in. Unframed. (B13196)

Peter Barrett (British, B. 1935) "Welsh Springer Spaniel" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Proofcard of the Great Britain 10-1/2P Welsh Springer Spaniel stamp issued February 7, 1979. A relative stranger to the show bench, the Welsh Springer Spaniel enjoys his fame as an all-around hunting dog. This delightful animal is found in many countries, for his heavy coat, sturdy build, and vigorous spirit enable him to adjust readily to varied climates. He is able to hunt long hours, retrieve through freezing waters, and adjust to either an outdoor or an indoor home. Indeed, no cover is too thick or weather too severe for this versatile hunter. His deep red and white coat serves as his protection and it has also set him apart from other breeds for centuries. As far back as the eighteenth century, English sporting paintings have depicted the Welsh Springer Spaniel, in his lovely characteristic coat, retrieving for the hunter. Though he was bred for springing or flushing game in his native Wales, the Welsh Springer Spaniel -- or "Starter" as he is also known in his homeland -- has also distinguished himself as a personable pet with an eagerness to please. He is gentle with children, but also knows when to become their stern and reliable guardian. Like all spaniels, the Welsh Springer Spaniel is a contented dog and an ideal companion for pet lovers of all ages. Active, merry, and of even disposition, the Welsh Springer Spaniel is, understandably, one of Britain's favorite breeds. Image Size: 6 x 6.75 in. Overall Size: 11.75 x 12.75 in. Unframed. (B95311)

Original vintage movie poster Air Devils, featuring a dynamic illustration of red planes flying through the air, one of which is marked with the Iron Cross resembling the famous German pilot Red Baron. Stamp at the bottom right corner 1968 Booth Films, Inc. Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (2 May 1892 – 21 April 1918), known in English as Baron von Richthofen was a fighter pilot with the German Air Force during World War I. He is considered the ace-of-aces of the war, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories. Richthofen was a Freiherr (literally "Free Lord"), a title of nobility often translated as "baron". This is not a given name nor strictly a hereditary title, since all male members of the family were entitled to it, even during the lifetime of their father. Richthofen painted his aircraft red, and this combined with his title led to him being called "The Red Baron", both inside and outside Germany. During his lifetime, he was more frequently described in German as Der Rote Kampfflieger, variously translated as "The Red Battle Flyer" or "The Red Fighter Pilot". This name was used as the title of Richthofen's 1917 autobiography. Fair condition, creasing, paper skimming, staining, tears.
