The Jacobites won the day, the battle taking place just a month before this detailed plan was published. Copac records only two examples of the map of Aberdeen. The British Library's copy is in the King's Topographical Collection, bound with a manuscript version, and The National Library of Scotland's example is bound - as is this example - in volume 5 of the 'Bibliotheca Topographica Britannica'. These charitable enterprises enabled ladies who had fallen on hard times to make a living using their needlework skills, without compromising their social standing. There was a proliferation of such societies in the late 19th century, as part of the wider Arts & Crafts Movement, producing a variety of needlework items - many made to order - such as chair covers, wall hangings, firescreens, coverlets and clothing, as well as bindings. The Working Ladies' Guild, in South Kensington, was particularly known for the production of carefully stitched bookcovers, typically incorporating metalwork, as here.
