Signed by Fleming to the front free endpaper and dated 1st January 1950 in his hand. With the stamp of the Wright-Fleming Institute Library alongside his signature and various other Library stamps etc. to the front pastedown. STEWART JAMES: (1908-1997) American Actor, Academy Award winner. Bold black ink signature (`J. Stewart`) on a white card, with the title of his famous Christmas film It`s a Wonderful Life added in his hand above. Together with a signed First Day Cover by Stewart, bearing a US postage stamp commemorating W. C. Fields, postally cancelled 29th January 1980. Also including a D.S., James Stewart, being a signed cheque, Beverly Hills, California, 2nd December 1981. The cheque, drawn on the United California Bank, is made payable to L.S.B. Leakey Foundation for the sum of $100. A feint bank cancellation only very lightly affects part of Stewart`s signature. VG to EX, 3
PATTI ADELINA: (1843-1919) Italian Soprano. A.L.S., Adelina Patti Cederstrom, four pages, 8vo, Craig-Y-Nos Castle, Breconshire, 27th April 1905, to Mr. Fiske. Patti thanks her correspondent for his Easter wishes and continues to announce `Since last writing to you, I have had a great pleasure, which perhaps you may have seen mentioned in the newspapers. I have received the Decoration de la Legion d`Honneur from the French President, & you can imagine how very proud I feel to possess this decoration, which has very seldom been given to a woman.` The singer further provides an address in London where she will be staying before concluding `I have so many hundreds of letters & telegrams of congratulations about my decoration to answer...` Together with Lily Pons (1898-1976) French-American coloratura soprano. Vintage signed and inscribed 11 x 13.5 photograph, an elegant image of the singer seated in a full length pose. Photograph by Seawell and bearing their credit stamp in the lower right corner. Signed in fountain pen ink with her first name only to a light area of the image, the inscription partially running across a darker area. VG, 2
NICHOLAS II: (1868-1918) Emperor of Russia 1894-1917. A very fine signed 9 x 13 photograph showing the Tsar standing in a three quarter length pose in uniform. In one hand he holds a pair of white gloves, and the other hand rests on a table at his side. Photograph by Boissonnas and Eggler and bearing their blind embossed stamp to the lower mount. Signed by the Emperor in English (`Nicholas`) in bold fountain pen ink to the lower photographer`s mount and dated 1914 in his hand. Rare. Some very slight silvering to the extreme edges of the image and a very few minor creases to the base of the mount. VG
MELBOURNE VISCOUNT: (1779-1848) British Prime Minister 1834, 1835-41. A.L.S., Melbourne, one page, 4to, Brocket Hall, 21st October 1836, to Palmerston. Melbourne writes, in full, `If we cannot interfere openly, it will never do to engage in a conspiracy in favour of the Queen of Portugal`. With blank integral leaf. A letter of interesting content between two Prime Ministers. A brief printed biography and small circular magazine portrait are neatly laid down at the base of the letter alongside the small circular ownership stamp from the Rawlins Collection. Together with Clementine S. Churchill (1885-1977) Wife of Sir Winston S. Churchill. T.L.S., Clementine S. Churchill, one page, 4to, Hyde Park Gate, London, 7th January 1964, to Miss. Harber. Churchill encloses a prize (no longer present) for a tombola being organised for the Annual Dance in aid of the British Empire Cancer Campaign for Research and also comments `My Husband and I are delighted that Colonel Barlow Wheeler`s work should have public recognition, and I am sure that-like you-many of his friends in Woodford join us in this.` G to VG, 2 Viscount Palmerston (1784-1865) British Prime Minister 1855-58, 1859-65. Palmerston, who married Melbourne`s sister, died at Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire.
MANDELA NELSON: (1918- ) President of South Africa 1994-99. Nobel Peace Prize winner, 1993. Signed First Day Cover commemorating Unicef and featuring a colour image of a mother and child. The cover bears a United Nations postage stamp, featuring the flag of Uganda, and is postally cancelled at the United Nations, New York, 20th September 1985. Signed (`N Mandela`) in black ink to a clear area and dated 2nd October 1998 in his hand. EX
JOHNSON AMY: (1903-1941) English Pioneer Aviatrix. A.L.S., Amy, two pages, 8vo, Hatfield, Hertfordshire, 27th May n.y. (1940), to her friend Lona Grainger, on the printed stationery of the Stone House hotel. Johnson laments that she has never been able to visit her correspondent in Blackpool and remarks `Now it`s out of the question for the duration as I`ve joined the A.T.A. [Air Transport Auxiliary] & am now working hard at Hatfield Aerodrome. We only get Sundays off & not always that, & very little petrol. I hate the life & am fed up to the teeth with doing such a stupid job when everyone is being urged to do everything they can. I feel awfully I`m wasting my time & not doing anything really useful, but maybe I`m being unjust about it. I only joined as a last resort, & it`s even worse than I expected. It`s like being back at a girls school again!` She continues to ask `Why aren`t you doing something useful! You ought to be a land girl or something. They`re really beginning to need women now, but even yet the demand isn`t very great. What an efficient nation we are!!!` Accompanied by the original envelope (postage stamp cut away) hand addressed by Johnson. A letter of interesting content. Signed commemorative cover, the German envelope commemorating the two cosmonauts and featuring small portraits of each wearing their spacesuits. The cover bears an Eastern German postage stamp and is postally cancelled 6th August 1966. Signed by both Gagarin and Titov with their names alone to light areas alongside their portraits. Signed Commemorative cover honouring man`s third flight to the moon with Apollo XI and featuring portraits of the three crew members, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. A US postage stamp commemorating Apollo 8 is affixed to the cover and postally cancelled at Cape Canaveral, 16th July 1969, the date of the historic Apollo XI launch. APOLLO XI: Signed First Day Cover by all three crew members of Apollo XI individually, Neil Armstrong (Commander, the first man to walk on the moon), Buzz Aldrin (Lunar Module Pilot, the second man to walk on the moon) and Michael Collins (Command Module Pilot). The cover commemorates the first moon landing and features an image of a footprint on the moon with the printed words `We came in peace for all mankind`. With a colour United States postage stamp also commemorating the first man on the moon, postally cancelled at Washington DC, 9th September 1969, and with a second cancellation dated on the day of the moon landing, 20th July 1969. Signed by Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins with their names alone to clear areas, in blue and black inks. Armstrong`s signature is a little light although perfectly legible. EX

WARTIME CHELSEA Scarce Chelsea home single sheet programme but in poor condition, Allied Armies XI v British Army, 15/3/41 at Stamford Bridge. Programme has been and still is attached to a page from a stamp album and is creased at the bottom. Team listings are complete, the Allied Armies XI including players from Norway, Belgium, Holland, Poland, Czechoslovakia with a French reserve. ENGLAND / IRELAND Match ticket and Linen itinerary for Inter-League Match , England v Ireland, played at Bradford City 10/10/1903 as a welcome to Bradford City who were newly formed and in their first season in the Football League. These items were likely to be the property of one of the Linesman as noted in pencil in the itinerary which provides details of the teams, match official , timetable for the day etc. Steve Bloomer was in the English side whilst the Irish side included players from Distillery (3), Bohemians (2), Glentoran (2), Linfield (2), Belfast Celtic, and Cliftonville. Only Villa had two players in the England team. Both itinerary and ticket are in generally good condition. A rare souvenir from the earliest days of Bradford City and Valley Parade.
