An Edwards & Roberts inlaid mahogany drawing-room cabinet, serpentine-shaped, central arched recess rare with boxwood and sycamore curtains, a cupboard to each side, single frieze drawer, the whole finely inlaid with playful children, instruments, flowers and ribbons in boxwood and sycamore, on square tapering legs with inlaid, braced undertier, maker`s stamp to drawer, label attached at rear, 2ft. 4in. An Imperial German Wurttemburg Infantryman’s pickelhaube, of regulation pattern with brass plate, the spike and base of white metal with removeable top to permit fitting of parade plume, the inside of the skull bearing owner’s name “F Bichel. 3, Korp”, and maker’s stamp “Eckart, Ulm”, with leather chinstrap. Basically GC (no cockades, base of spike slightly crushed, the front of the skull pierced to take unofficial, but apparently contemporary, single fitting for plate).
A late 19th century Imperial German senior NCOÂ’s dress sword, straight, fullered blade 32½Â”, with makerÂ’s name E & H Neuhaus, Solingen, inspectorÂ’s stamp and “81” at forte, brass hilt with upturned double shell guard, flattened diamond section knucklebow, facetted, flattened urn shaped pommel with prominent stud, foliage embossed quillon, top of knucklebow and pommel, in its brass mounted panelled leather scabbard the locket and underside of guard stamped en suite “125.RR.4”. GC (dents to locket and chape) Plate 8
A 1912 pattern South African cavalry officer’s sword, straight fullered blade 35”, by Wilkinson with “London Made” and inspector’s stamp on backstrap, etched with crowned S African arms, “South Africa”, “Zuid Afrika” and wreath within tightly scrolled foliate panels, regulation scroll pattern steel bowl guard, ornamental panel, shaped sharkskin grip, in its leather FS scabbard. GC, the blade retaining most original polish. Plate 8

A .577” Pattern 1861 Artillery percussion carbine, 40½Â” overall, barrel 24” with traces of ordnance proofs, the lock with crowned VR and “1861 L.A. Co”, fullstocked, the butt with “London Armoury, Bermondsey 1861” stamp, with steel barrel bands, regulation brass mounts, sling swivels and original steel ramrod. GWO & basically GC (barrel has been pitted and cleaned, light pitting to lock). Plate 12
A rare 1871 pattern Elcho sword bayonet for the Martini Henry rifle, swollen fullered blade 20”, with sawback, WD and broad arrow with inspector’s stamp at forte on one side and small crowned VR on the other, diced leather grips, “24” stamped on pommel, in its steel mounted leather scabbard with rectangular loop to locket. Good Condition, the blade clean (scabbard leather crazed). Plate 14
A very fine 5 shot 80 bore Kerr’s Patent 2nd pattern percussion revolver of the 1st Sussex Artillery Volunteers, the barrel bearing London proofs and “L.A.C” stamp, the frame with “London Armoury” in oval and engraved “Kerr’s Patent 100”, cylinder also engraved “No 100”, and the back action lock engraved “London Armoury, Bermondsey”, the butt cap engraved “1st Sussex Artillery Volunteers No 35”, gold damascened overall with fine koftgari artwork, flowers and foliage, the cylinder also bearing the signature of the Indian craftsman responsible for the decoration. Very Good Working Order and Clean Condition, in its dark oak glazed wall display case with brass plaque engraved “Revolver used by Officers 1st Sussex Artillery Volunteers - Presented to the Officers’ Mess 1st Home Counties Brigade R.F.A. by Col Sir Charles Boxall K.C.B - 1912-”, together with a letter from a bookseller in Glasgow dated April 1912 offering the revolver to Sir Charles Boxall for four guineas, a letter from Col Boxall presenting it either as a personal gift to the Colonel of the Home Counties Brigade R.F.A or to the officers’ mess “as you think fit”, and a letter from Col Tester, the last surviving officer of the 1st Sussex Artillery Volunteers, stating that he cannot throw any light on the origins of the revolver. DICKENS CHARLES: (1812-1870) English Novelist. Autograph Envelope signed, addressed in his hand to Leigh Hunt at Edwards Square, Kensington. Signed ('Charles Dickens') to the lower left corner. The envelope bears a Penny Black postage stamp and several partial and illegible post marks. Neatly cornermounted to card and matted beneath a small reproduction photograph of Dickens and framed and glazed in a dark wooden frame to an overall size of 10 x 16.5. Some light age wear, otherwise VG Leigh Hunt (1784-1859) English Critic, Essayist, Poet & Writer. Hunt is believed to have been the inspiration behind the character Harold Skimpole in Dickens's Bleak House (1852-53).
COLLINS WILKIE: (1824-1889) English Novelist. Autograph address panel signed ('Wilkie Collins'), the oblong 12mo panel neatly trimmed from a larger envelope, addressed by Collins in bold, dark fountain pen ink to Edward Lear at Villa Tennyson, San Remo, Italy and additionally marked in his hand 'By Book Post, Registered' and dated 25th August 1883. Bearing a four pence postage stamp and two Registered postal cancellations. Signed by Collins at the base with his return address at 90 Gloucester Place, London, in his hand. An interesting association. Some light age wear, otherwise VG Edward Lear (1812-1888) English Artist, Illustrator and Poet.
BURGESS ANTHONY: (1917-1993) British Novelist of A Clockwork Orange (1962). A.L.S., Anthony B., on one side of a correspondence card, Etchingham, Sussex, n.d. (24th December 1966), to Patrick Taylor at Collins. Burgess thanks his correspondent for their kindness and continues 'I think "Extra Verse" a very exciting idea, & it encourages me to think that I might consider considering thinking of writing poems again'. Hand addressed by Burgess to the verso. Together with a T.L.S., Anthony B, on one side of a correspondence card, Etchingham, East Sussex, 13th January (1967), also to Patrick Taylor. The letter features no punctuation or capital letters and Burgess writes, in part, 'we shant be back in london till candlemas james joyces birthday that is february the second to be precise as im still slaving away at the enderby book and other things to make tax money....id like very much to write verse again but its so difficult unless you can give it to a fictional character but thanks again for your invitation i saw the pink curry item why should this happen when turmerics yellow or is that my daltonianism coming out again'. Hand addressed by Burgess to the verso. Also including H. Rider Haggard (1856-1925) English Writer of Adventure Novels. Fountain pen ink signature ('H Rider Haggard') and date, 17th April 1919, in his hand on a page removed from an autograph album and further including William Gladstone (1809-1898) British Prime Minister 1868-74, 1880-85, 1886, 1892-94. Autograph envelope signed, W E Gladstone, addressed in his hand to the Mayor of Chester. Bearing a Penny Red postage stamp and post marked at Hawarden and Chester, 3rd November 1867. LLOYD GEORGE DAVID: (1863-1945) British Prime Minister 1916-22. Vintage signed sepia 7.5 x 9.5 photograph, an unusual image of Lloyd George standing outdoors in a full length profile pose viewing the rows of books for sale at W. H. Smith's book stall at Liverpool Street railway station. A newspaper date stamp to the verso indicates that the photograph was taken on 27th November 1929. Walter Inglis Anderson (American/Mississippi, 1903-1965), "Frogs", watercolor and pencil on paper, estate stamp lower right, "Luise Ross Gallery, New York" label en verso, 10 7/8 in. x 8 3/8 in., framed. Provenance: Luise Ross Gallery, New York, early 1990s. Note: Among the varied flora and fauna that Walter Anderson painted in watercolor during his sojourns to Horn Island, his compositions of frogs are among the most successful. The two frogs depicted here are colorfully rendered with Anderson`s characteristic style: painted in the shades of blue, green, purple and yellow that Anderson generally used in his depictions of frogs. The work offered here is a fulsome composition, using the negative space to reinforce his bold design.

This official letter appoints Benjamin Moodie as a Member of the Legislative Council of the Cape Colony. Couched in regal terms - `Her Majesty hath appointed and declared that there shall be within the Settlement a Council to be called the Legislative Council ...) Benjamin Moodie was appointed a Member of the Council `at Her Majesty`s pleasure`. Four sides, four sides written, 325mm high x 205mm wide. Paper watermarked 1851. 60mm diameter embossed Cape Colony stamp adjacent to the signature of Sir Harry Smith. No tears, loss, or chips, excellent condition.
