To this end, Babbage, Herschel and Peacock translated Lacroix's elementary treatise on the calculus which, like all continental works, followed Leibniz. The change over continued to move slowly and Babage decided it was necessary to provide some worked examples, which took the form of the present work. Within a few years Babbage had won the day and British mathematicians, no longer impeded by an imperfect notation, began to catch up with their continental rivals. (1)

Newfoundland 1857-64 4d. scarlet-vermilion, used on an outer wrapper from St. John's to Baltimore in the United States. The adhesive has large margins and a mute oval of bars cancellation, St. John's 7 July 1858 date-stamp of despatch and a Boston British Packet date-stamp of 18 July. Endorsed 'Per mail via Halifax' and with pencilled initials of the Italian philatelic expert, A. Diena. This 4d. stamp is very scarce used on a letter and is from the famous 'Tucker' correspondence.
An early 1930's Carter Stable Adams Poole pottery jug having swollen body with double shoulder and integral spout. The body decorated in the YP pattern with a large central abstract floral spray in mixed palette with additional flowers to the side within spotted and linear banding. The base having impressed lozenge mark, paintress mark and trial stamp, height 8".
A matched pair of early 1930's Clarice Cliff crocus footed shoulder vases each with a roll over rim. The pair both decorated in the Crocus pattern with a central double sided band of flowers within green, yellow and brown banded borders, the bases marked with the Bizarre stamp with printed Crocus mark, height 8.5", one A/F.
