[FLEMING IAN]: (1908-1964) British Author, creator of James Bond.A small selection of three printed Telegrams (received copies) sent by Ian Fleming, each one page, oblong 8vo, sent from London and received in Germany, n.d. (1950s, one bearing a date stamp at Berlin of 17th March 1951), to [Anthony] Terry. The telegrams read, in full, 'Grateful regular supply atticus paragraphs cabled or airmailed stop British angle desirable but unessential stop pungency newxworthiness fundamental = Fleming' (17th March 1951), 'Congratulations really splendid showing Sunday = signed Fleming' and 'Your recent coverage been splendid thanks = Fleming'. Each with multiple file holes at the left and/or upper margins, and with a few creases and very minor tears, not affecting the text, about VG, 3Anthony Terry (1913-1992) British Journalist, a former European Editor of The Sunday Times who was first hired in 1949 by Fleming (at the time the Foreign manager for the newspaper). Terry’s obituary in The Independent stated that he was ‘one of the paper’s most valuable assets, a one-man listening post, a fastidious checker of facts, a burrower into dark corners and a traveller who never complained of fatigue’.

A small selection of four printed Telegrams (received copies) sent by Ian Fleming, each one page, oblong 8vo, sent from London and received in Germany, n.d. (1950s, one bearing a date stamp at Berlin of 29th March 1951), to [Anthony] Terry. Fleming informs Terry of the good work he is producing, the telegrams reading, in full, 'Congratulations splendid show Empire News signed Fleming', 'You led all papers except Newcastle today splendid = Fleming' (29th March 1951), 'Thanks excellent suntimeser et your leakages led Glasgow prominent elsewhere today = Fleming' and 'Greatly impressed your fine coverage this year stop any news Stanbury regards = Fleming'. Darwin'), being the front panel only, slim oblong 8vo (9.5 x 4), addressed in Darwin's hand in bold, dark fountain pen ink to Dr Hooker FRS at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London W, and signed to the lower left corner. Bearing a blue two penny postage stamp and post marked at Bromley, Kent, July 1868. Some light overall age wear and a few minor creases, and with a small area of paper loss to the upper left corner. G Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911) British Botanist & Explorer, Director of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew from 1865. Hooker and Darwin enjoyed a close friendship.

JOHNSON AMY: (1903-1941) English Pioneer Aviatrix. A good vintage signed 8 x 5.5 photograph, the image depicting Johnson in a three quarter length pose happily emerging from the cockpit of her aircraft and being greeted by a gentleman, presumably her husband the aviator James Mollison. A little surprisingly Johnson is not wearing aviator's clothes. A crowd of onlookers can be seen to the right of the image which bears the credit stamp of Keystone to the verso. Signed ('Amy Mollison') in blue fountain pen ink with her name alone to a clear area of the image. One very slight, minor corner crease, otherwise VG

T.L.S., Hubert Scott-Paine, one page, 4to, Hythe, Southampton, 7th June 1929, to Messrs. F. W. Bridges & Sons Ltd., on the printed stationery of The British Power Boat Co. Scott-Paine ackniowledges receipt of his correspondent's letter and continues to explain 'I have been in Berlin with Sir Henry Segrave racing “Miss England” where we were successful in establishing this boat in the Championship of Europe and in establishing a new World's lap record for the unlimited class of motor boat'; Henry Segrave (1896-1930) British Land and Water Speed Record holder. T.L.S., de Hane, one page, 4to, London, 13th August 1929, to Hubert Scott-Paine ('Dear S.P.'). Segrave writes to his fellow racer regarding Miss England and their request to have the boat back in London by 26th September, explaining 'This I obviously cannot do because I do not know how long it will take to get the boat back from Venice. But I do promise you that she will leave on the night of the 15th., immediately we can get her packed after the race which finishes at 4.30pm on the afternoon of the 15th. More than this I cannot do'. Segrave further asks if the exhibitors will defray the extra heavy cost of the freight express. With a purple date received stamp to the lower left corner and a single blue indelible pencil stroke through the text; William Morris (1877-1963) 1st Viscount Nuffield. British Motor Manufacturer. T.L.S., Nuffield, one page, small 4to, Cowley, Oxford, 11th May 1936, to Mr. Cond, on the printed stationery of Morris Motors Ltd. Morris thanks his correspondent for their letter and photographs 'which will form very happy souvenirs of a pleasant voyage' and further remarking that he has returned from the trip 'feeling very much restored'. [HITLER ADOLF]: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1933-45. VON BISMARCK OTTO CHRISTIAN ARCHIBALD (1897-1975) Prince of Bismarck. German Politician & Diplomat. T.L.S., Bismarck, one page, 4to, London, 2nd April 1935, to Miss [Eileen] Cond, on the Prince's personal printed stationery from the German Embassy. Bismarck thanks his correspondent for her kind letter and explains 'Unfortunately it will not be possible to get you a signature of Herr Hitler, as he declines giving his signature to anybody'. In a holograph conclusion the Prince invites Cond to come and see him at the Embassy if she comes to London. Together with a T.L.S. by a member of Hitler's staff at his Chancellery, one page, small 4to, Berlin, 24th March 1934, to Herr Cond, in German. The official writes on behalf of the Fuhrer and states, in part, 'I am sorry to inform you that the exceedingly great demand & the great number of similar requests makes it impossible to fulfil your wishes for a personal signature'. Also including a series of T.Ls.S. etc., by various secretaries and officials on behalf of other famous individuals, most political leaders and members of Royal families, the majority written to Eileen Cond in the 1930s and politely declining her requests for signatures, including representatives of Benito Mussolini (in part, 'I regret to inform you that the Head of the Italian Government, following a practice he has adopted and from which he does not feel he can depart, is very sorry to be unable to comply with your request of granting you his autograph'), King Edward VIII (accompanied by a portion of the original registered envelope featuring the typed address panel bearing a square ERI VIII rubber stamp to the lower left corner), King Leopold III of Belgium, Prince Arthur of Connaught, Queen Victoria Eugenie, Tsar Ferdinand I of Bulgaria, Italo Balbo, Maurice Ravel, J. M. Barrie etc. Some light overall age wear and a few letters with paperclip rust stains to the edges. Generally G, 33

[VICTORIA]: (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom Great Britain & Ireland 1837-1901. Document, unsigned, one page (vellum), large oblong folio, London, 30th March 1874. The manuscript document being an ornately engraved Letters Patent, issued to John Imray, for an invention for 'Improvements in the preparation of Peat for fuel or charcoal and apparatus thereof… [which] has been communicated to him from abroad by William Bennett Hays of Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope…' Featuring the Royal Arms and title, Victoria by the Grace of God, embossed £100 patent stamp, and two blue £5 patent stamps affixed to the upper left portion. With the Great Seal of Queen Victoria affixed at the foot, in mustard yellow wax, measuring just over 6 inches in diameter, featuring the enthroned Queen Victoria to the recto, holding an orb and sceptre, with the allegorical figures of Justice and Religion seated either side and with the Royal Arms and Crown at the foot, the border wreathed with oaks and roses, and depicting Queen Victoria riding on horseback to the verso, the horse fully caparisoned, with a plume of ostrich feathers floating from the headstall, led by a page. At the base appears a harp surrounded by shamrocks and with the Latin legend Victoria Dei Gratia Britanniarum Regina Fidei Defensor ('Victoria, by the grace of God, Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith') to the margin. The seal is attached to the document by laces of burgundy thread (slightly faded). Some light overall age wear, particularly evident at the folds of the document and to the edges of the seal. FERRIER KATHLEEN: (1912-1953) English Opera Singer. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph, the image depicting Ferrier in a head and shoulders pose. Photograph by Vivienne of London and bearing her credit stamp to the verso. Signed by Ferrier in bold blue fountain pen ink to the lower border. Signed photographs of Ferrier are rare as a result of her untimely death from cancer at the age of 41. A couple of minor, small light stains, not affecting the signature, otherwise VG

SCHULZ CHARLES M.: (1922-2000) American Cartoonist, best known for the comic strip Peanuts. A good signed First Day Cover issued to commemorate the traditions of Christmas and featuring a gold coloured replica of a Seasons Greetings US postage stamp, signed (‘Schulz’) by Schulz beneath a good original ink sketch of the head of Snoopy in his hand to a clear area of the cover. Also signed by Mike Peters (1943-  ) American Cartoonist, best known for the comic strip Mother Gooseand Grimm. Signed ('Mike Peters') by Peters in bold black ink above a good original ink sketch of the bull terrier Grimm in his hand. Post marked at Nazareth, Missouri, 30th October 1985. VG

IDYLLS OF THE KING: A good, large 14 x 19 engraving by the artist Gustave Doré(1832-1883, French Artist, Printmaker, Illustrator and Sculptor), the image depicting Lancelot's Remorse, the knight mournfully gazing into a river, being an illustration for the poem cycle Idylls of the King (1859-85) by Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892, English Poet Laureate 1850-92). Signed by both Dore and Tennyson individually to the lower border, both in bold pencil and with their names alone. With a small blind embossed stamp of the Print Society Association to the left corner. With minor foxing and some age wear to the edges, GIdylls of the King is a cycle of twelve narrative poems by Tennyson which retells the legend of King Arthur, his knights, his love for Guinevere and her tragic betrayal of him, and the rise and fall of Arthur’s Kingdom.

A 1940s H J Wood Bursley Ware wall plaque, designed by Charlotte Rhead in the TL5 Autumn Fruits pattern, having tube-lined decoration of lustred fruits and leaves (37cm diameter), together with another, smaller, in the same pattern but with a different colourway (30cm diameter), each with the bespoke 'Arabesque Charlotte Rhead' back stamp.

A pair of Burleigh Ware wall plaques, designed by Charlotte Rhead in the Persian pattern, no. 4013, an intricately tube-lined design of flowers and leaves in the Iznik manner, on an ivory and cream ground. Due to the cost of production, only a handful of these plaques were produced and in all likelihood, the decoration was completed by Charlotte herself. Each plaque is approximately (36cm diameter) and features a printed Burleigh stamp, together with a tube-lined L Rhead (for Lottie Rhead) signature in Charlotte's own hand and a pattern number. NB: One of the plaques has an incorrect pattern no. 4011, which was a separate Rhead pattern.

A 1920s Burleigh Ware hexagonal vase, designed by Charlotte Rhead in the Gouda pattern, no. 4001, having tube-lined stylized roses within lobed and pointed panels, painted in pink, blue, orange and puce, on a green ground, printed and tube-lined marks to the base (14cm), together with an octagonal Burleigh Ware fruit bowl, having tube-lined and painted trellis and fruit decoration, the base with printed stamp and a tube-lined Rhead signature, no pattern number (20cm diameter). Condition Report: A chip and hairline to the rim of the vase and a hairline to one edge of the bowl.

PASSPORT TO RUSSIA AND LETTER FROM AUSTRALIA Passport, a single folding printed sheet of watermarked blue paper, 410 x 265mm, partly filled in ink by hand, authorizing the bearer, a Mrs. Sarah Cayley, to travel through Europe to Russia, June 1856; issued in Paris by the British Ambassador to France, Henry Richard Charles Wellesley, first Earl Cowley (1804-1884), the document is signed by both Cowley and Cayley (perhaps a relation to George John Cayley, the traveller and writer?). Two engraved royal coats-of-arms, the verso with multiple diplomatic stamps, notes and signatures, and one red wax seal, languages including Russian; good condition considering use, with some soiling and minor chips to extremities, folds not splitting, clearly legible [with:] Autograph Letter Signed 'David' from Melbourne, Australia, to a Mrs. Pattison (his mother) in Leeds, December 1887; in total pp. 8, folded into original postmarked envelope with (colony of) Victoria stamp and marked for the Royal Mail Ship Massilia; mostly personal family content, the mss. on thin waxy paper clearly legible; some tape repairs, the usual soiling and minor staining (2)
