AGNEW (Rupert), envelope, addressed in pencil, franked 'Field Post Office 13 Ju [19]18', with red stamp 'Passed by Censor No. 1474', containing 2 pp. a.l.s.; 4 pp. a.l.s. to his brother Ivo, undated, post armistice, pencil written; 3 pp. a.l.s. to Miss B. Heinekey, with original envelope, franked 'Field Post Office 6. No. 17' with censorship stamp : "I see by the papers Ivo is posted as missing ... I feel very certain that he is a prisoner [see Lot 85, below] ... The Flying Officers are supposed to have a fairly good time as prisoners - I got well landed this last tour in the line ... Three weeks of it and nothing but operations .... We were next to the Canadians the account of whom you will have read in the papers. Their wonderful daring on Passchendaele Ridge. Very little of it is true and they made a terrible mess of it .... The enemy aircraft continually drop bombs here but we take little notice of them as they have very local effect. The Gas was rather uncomfortable last time and we all had to wear air respirators daily ....", dated 4.11.17; and 6 other letters or cards, in original envelopes, dated 1916 & 1917; all from the Front (9).

A George IV rosewood four tier whatnot, having beaded three quarter galleries and reel mouldings, on turned supports, the base on short turned legs to brass castors, stamped '...ES & HA... PATENT', 52.25in (132.7cm) h, 17.5in (44.5cm) w, 17.75in (45cm) d. The castors are stamped on the inside and the stamper has been unable to get a clear mark due to the round and concave surface, the stamp is likely to be that of Yates & Hamper.

Newton & Co, Newcastle-upon-Tyne (Retailers) A VICTORIAN BRASS AND IRON DOUBLE BED of tubular construction with brass finials, cresting rails and flowerhead joints, the foot additionally having brass disc and scroll ornamentation, the iron sections black-painted, on castors, 142cm, (56in) wide, the head 163cm (64in) high, the foot 133cm, (52.3in) high, sold with iron runners, plus a pine base with sprung wire mesh, and a fragmentary handwritten receipt on headed paper of "W.Newton & Co, 165 Westgate Road", detailing "French bedstead", "Wire mattress" "Hair Mattress £2" (absent) and "Down Bolster and Pillows 12/-" (also absent), signed by employee Edward Robson, with a one penny stamp (upper right quarter of receipt lacking) *** The 1997 Accessions of the Tyne and Wear Archives Service record Newton & Co, bicycle and furniture retailer, Newcastle, documented 1860-99.
A Victorian boulle serpentine centre table in the French manner, indistinctly stamped '& FROM. .. & H. JEWELL'S. .. ', applied with gilt brass mounts and inlaid throughout with cut brass and red 'tortoiseshell' with scrolling foliage, strapwork and figures, the frieze with a drawer and on cabriole legs applied with caryatids, 73cm. high x 150cm. wide, some damage. The stamp appears to be that of S & H Jewell, 29-31 Little Queen Street, Holborn, London. Founded in 1830/40 and still trading in 1894.
