Related scroll arms can be found on a set of twelve brass-inlaid rosewood dining chairs for which a design dated 1810 exists in the Gillows' Estimate Sketch Books, see ibid., vol. I, p. 314, pl. 191. Another rosewood model with buhl-inlay, circa 1813, is at Tatton Park, Cheshire (ibid., pp. 220, pl. 203, 202). Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and useOld chips and splits, some old repairs, some old losses. The appearance of some of the repairs would improve significantly by restoration. Several of the joins of the seat rails of the chairs have some movement and require 'tightening' this is likely to need to involve removing seat upholstery in order to carry out successfully. The cresting rail of the back of one chair has historically become detached and there is some adjacent damage and loss to the positioning where the rail connects. Some old worm damage, most noticeably to underlying seat rails however this does not immediately appear to weaken the structure of the affected elements. We cannot guarantee the condition of elements that are not visible at this stage. Having the chairs restored well by an experienced restorer would improve the appearance and practicality of the chairs considerably. Condition Report Disclaimer
