There is a wildness, a grandeur, and a mystery about his designs which are indescribably fine:- the painter is also a poet. ... we look upon these engravings to belong to the foremost order of true genius: beyond this there is no praise." Great Britain - Covers - QV : 1820s-1950s Just how often does an original archive turn up these days? Looking back, I remember being on the periphery of the discovery of the ‘Corsini’ correspondence – even today when such letters turn up they seem to be avidly snapped up. But, all those tales of Solicitor’s cellars and crate-fulls of penny blacks on cover seem to be flights of fancy don’t they. Well, not any longer; I’d say this is the first original archive we’ve seen in thirty years. That’s remarkable, utterly remarkable. Understandably the vendor wished to keep the entire archive intact, preserving it for posterity. Unfortunately (but fortunate for the owner) the discovery of a 4 margin 1d black rare Plate XI on cover within the archive significantly ‘skewed’ the value of the archive increasing the estimate value by 5 figures upward so that the archive ‘intact’ - valued at £20,000+ was sufficient to deter most buyers. The plate XI cover has now been sold - thereby presenting postal historians and historic wine researchers/ wine aficioandos an unique unparalled opportunity to acquire the entire archive (excluding one cover only for which a scan is available) at a much more affordable collector/researcher’s price. This being the archive of Pulling & Co., Wine merchants of Hereford. The archive includes price lists, advertising cards, invoices dating from the 1820s, many 100s – at first we thought probably high hundreds of items housed in three large tubs, but when the team actually waded through we counted an extraordinary approximately 3,400 items of which in the region of half appear to be philatelic with a substantial balance in documents, receipts, invoices, uncancelled letters, and including hundreds of ‘Pulling’s’ own brand bottle labels, cards/marketing material etc. Highlights include 1d black Plate 10 on entire letter (4 margin but aged) from Worcester MY 11 1841 tied black Maltese Cross, close at top right otherwise four margins. There are a few other 1d black covers and a three margin 1840 2d blue on 1843 cover from Dublin, very late usage. Noted are many imperf and perf 1d red covers including much postmark interest, Irish, Spoons, etc. Invoices to Pulling & Co. postmarked from Cognac, France include four 1851-52 covers bearing Ceres imperf 40c orange pairs and three with Ceres imperf 40c orange horiz strips of four, including one 4 margins and unfolded – SG catalogue £600 - £700 each stamp depending upon shade and excluding premium for strips. An original lot, offered completely intact as received and condition variable throughout, but obviously including ‘plum’ items, excellent lot for a wine enthusiast with huge scope for research. Although perhaps not of pecuniary value what I particularly like about this archive is the social history and the fabulous engraved ‘letterheads’ and designs of invoices and receipts redolent of the period. This archive is the only lot offered in this auction which may be personally viewed at our offices, strictly by appointment only. Hong Kong : (SG 54b) 1898 (1st April) 10c on 30c grey-green, SURCHARGE DOUBLE with equal intensity, from position 17 of the third printing showing broken 'EN', very fine mint, and with 2011 BPA photo certificate signed by Schneider, Granger and Taylor, probably the most knowledgeable experts in the field today. To put the rarity of this stamp into perspective, the 10c on 30c with Chinese characters similarly with double surcharge has been recorded incl. within a complete mint pane, and a handful of singles (currently priced at £12,000 by SG). ONLY one row in a single pane became doubly printed, and the row comprised a setting of six subjects (incl. the above variety showing 'EN' broken); Moving on to the same stamp issue without Chinese characters which this is, ONLY ONE OTHER EXAMPLE IS KNOWN and unpriced by SG, and to find one with this combination of broken letters is almost certainly unique. A Hong Kong and indeed Asian philately rarity of the highest calibre. (image available) [US7]

Lot 20698

Australia - States : I've always liked collectors who accumulate classic material with the intention of sorting it out in the future because these are the real collections where there is a good chance of adding value by subsequent collector-owners making real 'finds'. This is one such 'collection' of Australia and Australian States (a great area to work with because the States are so complicated - for anybody prepared to put in the effort - this is where commitment can pay dividends... Presented here, by a collector who is retiring from philately, is an old A4 sized 'Pronto' 32 sides (page) stockbook, with 21 pages well-filled, predominantly tightly arranged used ranges well displayed, commencing Australia 'Roos' arranged by denomination from perhaps a few roos to up to circa 15 duplicated stamps - values from ½d through to 2 shilling, just one x 5s. Completely unchecked by us for wmks/types pmks/c.t.o., odd perfins noted. Similarly unchecked ranges KGV heads thru to 1s 4d, ovpts/perfins etc. The collection rolls out in like fashion for the 'States' - commencing Victoria, well loaded from very mixed condition imperfs, odd Stamp Duty' noted, followed by Queensland, good ranges imperf / perf chalons for Tasmania (usual cleaned fiscals noted - including a plausible imperf 2d green, mint with gum - stc £5,000 but cleaned and certainly re-gummed). South Australia from few 'imperfs' - noted 1 s. red-brown wmk large star perforate cds used ovpt. M.B. Marine Board, well worth checking with apparent 'blind' roulette to righ hand side, New South Wales follows from 'imperfs', then not so 'punchy' Western Australia 'Swans' perf types only - but possible postmark interest. Condition overall very mixed, many hundreds. Great opportunity for specialist - please ask for scans... HEAVY LOT, OVERSEAS BIDDERS PLEASE ENQUIRE FOR SHIPPING COST (One 'Pronto' Stock-book)

The value predicated upon the collector's determination to put together a fine to very fine to superb used collection from high grade GB supplier sources, so that the overall original purchase price over a period of up to the past 10 years exceeds GBP£20,000. With few exceptions (mainly in cheaper stamps which could fairly easily be replaced) the goal has been achieved, but now the time has come for the ball to be passed on to the next collector, so that the collection is offered intact at an attractive fraction of the original outlay. Commencing 4 mgn 1d blacks x 3, these being quality 4 mgn examples, some costing up to several hundreds of pounds each as individually purchased, similar high quality continues from 1840 2d blue, imperf 1d reds, ditto 2d blues - incl stunning hand-picked line engraved postmark examples, similar condition with more line engraved, then the surface printed is a real treat - with values to 5 s. SG126, £1 SG212, virtually (but not always) each stamp following line engraved is CDS quality. The collection presents an extraordinary opportunity for acquisition and continuation, with much of the hard work done, but still plenty of challenge to continue, and not always at ludicrous cost. Occasionally the collector has 'slipped' and allowed heavier cancelled stamps to infiltrate. These are easily improved as these stamps are replaced, some of them inexpensively. Later ranges are thorough and often a good to high degree of completion. Noted a lovely CDS £1 PUC, some seahorse values, officials, dues etc. The modern QEII includes wildings with 605a etc, the more recent decimal appear to have been purchased as mint and certainly some, sympathetically cancelled to order. Includes miniature sheets and defins. The mint collection in two volumes is a bit of a puzzle until the '1d. Drops' - when it is realised that this was most likely the collector's original collection - a sort of 'launchpad' to the used collection, probably after a lovely fine mint Edward 10 s. Ultramarine, (SG265) was purchased. There's still value in the mint collection - but probably 10% +/- of the overall value of the collection. It's easy to imagine the ultimate acquirer disposing of the lower value mint and 're-investing' realisation in continuation of the used. (UPA could assist in this respect). Conclusion: an extraordinary opportunity to continue an extraordinary collection for an initial outlay significantly below original cost. Malta : (SG 96) 1919 The Famous SG96. 'Malta 10 shilling shipwreck of St. Paul' - multiple crown CA watermark 10 shilling black. In 40 years we've probably handled several mint overprint 'specimen' (£1,000 catalogue value) examples, but never once a mint example, let alone this fine part NW CDS corner cancelled example. Centred just slightly NW, In our research we only located two examples - both priced at £3,500 - one being, in our opinion, of similar overall standard and not quite such fine appearance, the other example well centred and superior - but up to £1,000 more is a lot to pay for less than 1 m.m. of centring. As most devotees of classic BE will be aware - Malta SG96 is a stamp that must be purchased with certificate from a respected body (due to dextrous manipulation of the more common crown CC wmk stamps to appear to be the rare SG96). An RPS 1993 photo-certificate of authenticity accompanies stating genuine, however the certificate, somewhat harshly also notes that this stamp is toned and stained upon reverse, whereas it actually is'nt - what we note are gum residues which, were we in Germany would soon be removed by an expert paper 'conservator'. Because we do not necessarily believe in conserving where conserving is not necessary, the estimate reflects the certificate. A remarkable stamp in excellent state of preservation. At the time of writing Stanley Gibbons doesn't offer an SG96. 1993 RPSL Certificate. Cat £4750 (image available)
