Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "United Nations in Oceania" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.N. 22c 40th Anniversary of the United Nations stamp issued June 26, 1985. During World War II, the nations allied against Germany, Italy and Japan were known as the United Nations. Later, this name was given to a postwar organization dedicated to preserving lasting world peace. In 1945, representatives of the allied nations met in San Francisco to work out a plan for this new international organization to help keep the peace. This plan was described in a document known as the Charter of the United Nations. In June, 1945 Australia and other Oceania countries ... together with nearly fifty other nations ... signed this Charter to become the first UN members. As members, each nation pledges to uphold the purposes of the United Nations -- foremost being the preservation of international peace and security. The United Nations is also dedicated to the development of friendly relations among nations based on equal rights and international cooperation. Since the founding of the United Nations, nearly every country on earth has joined the organization. New members are admitted to the United Nations on recommendation of the Security Council, however each new member must be accepted by a two-thirds vote of the General Assembly. To be considered for membership each country must be a peace-loving state. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B09620)

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Fort York/Ontario" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 34c Fort York stamp issued June 28, 1985. Canada's historic Fort York, located near present day Toronto, was the site of several important battles during the War of 1812. On the morning of April 27, 1813, the soldiers at the garrison and the townspeople of York were startled to see the sails of fifteen American warships in the harbor. The British forces at the fort were outnumbered three to one by the Americans and a furious battle was fought. During one part of the action, the powder magazine at the fort accidentally exploded, killing many men on both sides. Indeed, the large numberof British and American casualties made this one of the bloodiest battles in the War of 1812. Despite stiff resistance, the Americans were able to capture the fort and town, thereby gaining many badly needed supplies. The American forces returned to Fort York several months later and landed unopposed. However, the British soldiers had anticipated the Americans' return and hid many military supplies before the American forces could seize them. After the second American raid, Fort York was rebuilt and fortified to withstand direct attacks. However, no more battles were fought during the War of 1812. During the American Civil War, however, a heavy seven-gun battery was placed along the south wall of the fort to ward against fighting along the U.S./Canada border. Today, Fort York is maintained as a living museum and recreates for visitors the sights and sounds of a nineteenth century British garrison. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B09685)

Keith Reynolds (American, B. 1929) "Japanese Warships Nagara and Isuzu" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas Board.Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 45c Japanese Warships Nagara and Isuzu stamp issued September 23, 1994. April 1922 marked the launching of the light cruiser Nagara. Characterized by its long, narrow hull, this vessel was capable of sailing at a top speed of 36 knots. The following year the Isuzu took its maiden voyage as well. In the same class as the Nagara, the Isuzu was once captained by Isoroku Yamamoto, famed World War II admiral of the Japanese fleet. When the island of Tarawa fell to the Allies in November 1943, these ships quickly became involved in troop movements around Kwajalein and Mili islands in the Marshalls. However, in February 1944 the Japanese lost Kwajalein as well. Image Size: 14 x 24 in. Overall Size: 20 x 24 in. Unframed. (B14776)

Ian Pollock (B. 1950) "Thomas Hardy - Tess of the D'Urbervilles" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain Thomas Hardy stamp issued July 10, 1990. Tess of the d'Urbervilles was the twelfth novel published by Thomas Hardy. The novel was published in December of 1891. It portrays a heroine who is seduced by the son of her employer and is therefore not considered a pure woman by the rest of society. Hardy shows a preoccupation with social class, both working and upper class, throughout his novels. He reflects his pessimism in Tess of the d'Urbervilles toward the chances for Tess to ascend in society. Image Size: 18 x 22 in. Overall Size: 20.5 x 23.25 in. Unframed. (B12493)

Lot 154

Liu Dun (Chinese, B. 1953) "Palace Museum - Shenyang" Original Watercolor painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c China '96 Stamp Show Souvenir Sheet issued May 17, 1996. In 1625, the Qing Dynasty began construction of the Shenyang Imperial Palace. The palace was located at the center of the ancient city of Shenyang facing a large open area containing two memorial arches, one celebrating civil accomplishments, the other military victories. The palace consists of three sections. The prominent middle section contains the Hall of Lofty Politics where Emperor Tai Zong administered imperial affairs and directed war operations. The eastern section of the palace is built around the Hall of Grand Politics, an octagonal pavilion of wooden construction. The western part of the structure centers on the Hall of Literature. The palace at Shenyang is one of the best-preserved imperial palaces in China, comparable to the former Imperial Palace at Beijing. Today it is open to the public as a museum. Image Size: 4.5 x 7.5 in. Overall Size: 7.5 x 10.5 in. Unframed. (B15382)

Lot 291

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Tundra Muskox" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 37c Tunda Muskox Arctic Animals stamp issue of July 2, 2003. Called omingmak -- meaning "the animal with skin like a beard" -- by Inupiaq-speaking Eskimos, the muskox Ovibos moschatus has changed little since the last ice age. Mature bulls average five feet high at the shoulder and weigh up to 800 pounds. During the rut (the annual period of sexual excitement in the males), battles between bull muskoxen become battering contests which are as spectacular as they are violent. After a mutual display of aggression, two bulls charge at top speed directly towards one another from distances of 50 yards or more, colliding squarely on their horns. Incredibly, the sound created by this tremendous impact may be heard from up to a mile away. Following a clash, the competitors back up, swinging their heads from side to side, and then repeat the sequence until one bull runs away. A battle may consist of 20 clashes -- each with a force equivalent to that of an automobile slamming into a concrete wall at 17 miles per hour. Luckily for them, bull muskoxen boast heavily armored skulls to protect them from the intense shock of impact; four inches of horn and another three inches of solid bone lie directly between the animal's brain and the area of contact. After muskoxen disappeared from Alaska in the 1800s, a transplant population of some thirty specimens was brought from East Greenland to Alaska's Nunivak Island in the 1930s. Today, thanks to conservation efforts, close to 3,000 muskoxen roam free in Alaska. Image Size: 7 x 6 in. Overall Size: 14 x 13 in. Unframed. (B17099)

Lot 293

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Germany Postal Relics" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 22c Stamp Collecting stamp issued January 23, 1986. Today, it is a simple matter to send a letter abroad. However, in the mid 1800s it was somewhat more troublesome. For, in countries like Germany, there were numerous sovereign states and many different routes through rough, mountainous terrain. During this time, the duties of the postmaster were often combined with that of innkeeper. In addition to serving as a host for travelers, this person was responsible for receiving and passing along the mail to the next post, and providing fresh horses for the postboys who carried the mail. When the mail was due to arrive, the citizens of the town would gather around the Post Office to wait for its arrival which was heralded by the distant sound of the postal horn. Today, the postal horn has come to symbolize much of the rich postal history of Germany and other nations. This artwork depicts an antique postal horn from the early 1900s, and an ornate mailbox used by the Imperial German Mail Service. An official post office sign of the German Reichspost is also shown. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B10034)

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Centre Des Congres in Monaco" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Monaco Europa 1987 Modern Art - Architecture stamp issued April 23, 1987. A tiny principality with a rich history, Monaco is tucked along the French Mediterranean coastline. The nation has been at the forefront of modern trends in Europe, especially during the twentieth century. Nowhere is this better seen that in Monaco's architecture. The architectural legacy of the Grimaldi Prences is evident; ultra-modern structures are built on land reclaimed from the Mediterranean and co-exist side by side with traditional structures such as Monaco's cathedral and those found in the Palace Square area. Designed by the noted European architect Vasarely, the Centre des Congr?s complex -- complete with heliport -- occupies a stretch along the Monaco shore. The building's design represents a modern solution to the functional problems inherent in office buildings. It features a horizontally integrated structure with plenty of window area and "open" space. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B11061)

Lot 277

Chuck Ripper (American, B. 1929) "Hawaiian Goose" Signed lower left. Original Gouache/Watercolor painting on Masonite.Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.N. 32c Hawaiian Goose Endangered Species stamp issued March 13, 1998. The state bird of Hawaii, the Hawaiian Goose is a magnificent looking bird characterized by its barred neck, checkered chest and black cap. The least aquatic of all geese, it favors high, sparsely vegetated, inhospitable volcanic slopes, often far from water. The Hawaiian Goose has become so adapted to its harsh environment that it has essentially evolved into a land bird, with uncommonly long legs, reduced webbing on its feet and unusually strong, well-padded toes designed for navigating the coarse lava flows. It feeds on grasses, berries and leaves, and acquires its water from the food it eats and by drinking dew from its feathers. Families of Hawaiian Geese travel together until the young are a year old, dispersing when the next nesting season begins. Pairs are monogamous and mate for life, with the male protecting the female throughout incubation. At one time, the Hawaiian Goose could be found in abundance throughout the Hawaiian Islands. But as the Islands' human population grew, so did the numbers of cats, wild dogs, feral pigs, rats and the Indian mongoose. The Hawaiian Goose has no defense against these predators, especially during its long moulting season when the bird is unable to fly for six to eight weeks. By 1950, a mere 30 to 50 Hawaiian Geese remained in the wild. The remarkable bird was saved from extinction through captive breeding-and-release programs. Today, approximately 800 wild Hawaiian Geese can be found on the Islands, all of which are still threatened by predators. Image Size: 12.5 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 15 x 17.75 in. Unframed. (B15882)

Lot 284

Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Girl Guides Association" Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain Girl Guides stamp issued March 24, 1982. When in 1908 Robert Baden-Powell's tremendously successful book "Scouting for Boys" was published, girls all over the country began to borrow their brothers' copies and to form small groups, calling themselves Girl Scouts. Powell's original intention was that Scouting should be for boys only. But girls, seeing the fun and adventure their brothers were having as Boy Scouts, began asking to join too. Robert Powell soon realized that if girls continued to call themselves Scouts , the boys, for whom the training was originally intended, may lose interest. He also knew that parents at that time would not approve such a tomboyish image for their daughters. He therefore chose for the girls a new name ... Girl Guides. Powell's sister, Agnes Baden-Powell, adapted "Scouting for Boys" as the basis of a parallel program for girls and, in conjunction with her brother, wrote "How Girls Can Help to Build Up the Empire" -- the official handbook for Girl Guides which was published in 1912. Due to popular demand the "Rosebuds," later re-named the Brownies, was added to the girls' movement to serve girls eight to eleven years old. Since their inception, the Girl Guides and Brownies have increased membership dramatically every year, with a combined total today of over 300,000 Guides and Brownies in the United Kingdom alone and millions more throughout the world. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 13.25 x 19.5 in. Unframed. (B06220)

Chuck Ripper (American, B. 1929) "Carnegiea gigantea Cactus" Signed lower left. Original Gouache/Watercolor painting on Illustration Board.Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.N. 32c Carnegiea gigantea Endangered Plants Series stamp issued March 14, 1996. They can rise more than 30 feet above the desert sands of the American Southwest. Their fragrant flowers feed birds, bats and bees, and their fruit can be made into a tasty jelly. Venerable examples have survived in their harsh desert environment for two centuries or more. Yet today America's saguaro cactus is an endangered species. Photographic evidence provides proof that the population of these candelabra-like plants is waning. Pictures taken just a few decades ago show hills filled with saguaros. Recent photographs of the same hillsides proclaim a tragedy in the making. For some reason as yet unknown, the saguaros are dwindling. Where once they were plentiful, they are becoming scarce. Unfortunately, saguaros are notoriously slow-growing plants. In their arid habitat, they grow less than five inches per year, and it can take up to 60 years for a plant to form its trademark "arms" paralleling the main column. That fact, coupled with the increase in human development throughout the Southwest, creates a discouraging scenario. Were the saguaro to disappear, many species of birds that depend on it for nesting space and shelter would suffer. And a living reminder of the legendary American West would vanish into history. Image Size: 12.5 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 14.75 x 17.75 in. Unframed. (B15322)

Lot 300

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Damaged Leaf" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Germany 80pf Forest Conservation stamp issued July 16, 1985. A forest in its natural state changes little from year to year. But, with the intervention of man, a forest can suffer -- its very existence questioned in an incredibly short amount of time. For this reason, the forest needs to be watched, and maintained, so that it will continue to offer us its many gifts. In highly developed countries, forests are today respected for their contributions to our system of life -- for the important chemical balances they provide. But in many developing nations, where the forests are so plentiful, there is no maintenance. And there is no assurance that those forests so vital to our planetary survival will exist even a few hundred years from now. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 15 x 20 in. Unframed. (B09752)

Lot 298

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Abstract Sculpture Woman and Bird" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Spain Europa 1987 Modern Art - Architecture stamp issued May 15, 1987. Spain has been involved in every significant architectural movement and school in the last thousand years: Romanesque structures which lasted until the rise of the Gothic style of architecture in the 12th Century; the magnificent cathedrals and palaces of the Renaissance; the ornateness of the Baroque period; and the present day Art Nouveau architecture. Spain's architectural traditions are indeed rich and varied, and Spanish architecture in the last decades has been renewing constructive ideas and establishing a relationship with urban areas which need regenerating. Modern architectural theories try to combine the functional and the aesthetic with an ambition which leaves behind old molds. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B10770)
