Bill Ramsey (American, B. 1951) "Hawaiian Scenes" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 20c Hawaiian Statehood stamp issued March 12, 1984. August 21, 1959 is a day that will live forever in America's history ... for on that day the territory of Hawaii became the fiftieth state of the Union. Prior to Hawaii's attaining statehood, travelers from all over the world had already made Hawaii famous for its lovely beaches and beautiful weather -- Mark Twain even called it "the loveliest fleet of islands that lies anchored in any ocean." The islands of this balmy paradise rise out of the warm waters of the Pacific and are topped by peaks which sometimes spew forth a fiery breath of lava. Looking down from the volcanic peaks, one may see the velvet green stretches of sugarcane and pineapple crops. Importantly too, modern Hawaii has not lost sight of her fascinating history. A bronze statue of King Kamehameha I -- the ruler who united many independent tribal kingdoms -- stands tall in Honolulu's Civic Center. Image Size: 15 x 18.5 in. Overall Size: 20 x 25.25 in. Unframed. (B08773)

Lot 256

Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Traffic Policeman on Motorcycle" Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 11 1/2P Traffic Police Mammoth stamp issued September 26, 1979. To be a traffic policeman in London, one of the busiest cities in the world, is no easy task. Amid thousands of automobiles, trucks, double decker buses, and pedestrians, these officers must direct the flow of traffic in such a way as to minimize accidents and speed people to their destinations with the least congestion possible. In addition to enforcing parking, speed, and other traffic safety laws, the traffic police also inspect vehicles to see that they meet Great Britain's safety and licensing requirements. Also, these officers provide protection for young school children on their way to and from the schoolhouse. Today, the British Traffic Division performs their duties from high powered motorcycles such as the one pictured on this artwork. This BMW machine with special safety and rescue equipment was designed expressly to meet the British Police Department's specifications, and it has been a real asset to the force in recent years. London's special traffic forces make their headquarters in police stations all across London. One such station, the Marble Arch, which can be seen in the background of this painting, houses London's smallest police station. From this small station and others like it all across London, the traffic policemen spread out to all parts of the city to manage London thoroughfares -- quietly, unobtrusively, keeping the city traffic running smoothly. Image Size: 11.75 x 14 in. Overall Size: 15 x 22 in. Unframed. (B05335)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Art Deco Eagle" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 55c Art Deco Eagle Mail Box stamp issued February 22, 2001. America's beloved national emblem, the eagle has appeared as a featured decorative ornament in American folk art almost since the birth of the nation. This popular symbol is seen on such diverse items as wallpaper, musical instruments, pottery, glassware, china, cookie jars, playing cards, canes, bookends, posters, picture frames, whiskey bottles, ship figureheads and flags. During the Revolutionary War, General George Washington chose the eagle as the motif for the buttons on his uniform. In 1782, it became the central figure of America's Great Seal and, in 1789 when Washington was inaugurated the first President of the United States in New York City, he proudly stood beneath a magnificent eagle that adorned the pediment of Federal Hall. The eagle first appeared on American coinage when New Jersey issued a copper coin in 1786. Silver dollars, half dollars and dimes displaying the eagle entered circulation in 1794. The nation's first gold coins were minted in 1795, and were known as eagles and half eagles -- ten and five dollar pieces respectively. Many 19th century American coins featured an eagle in flight or perched upon a branch or rock. Other designs portrayed the eagle in a heraldic pose with a ribbon or banner held in its beak. Eagles are also a popular design for weather vanes made from sheet copper, brass or tin. Eagles were featured motifs in fabrics, beautifully stitched into quilts, draperies and rugs -- often elaborately ornamented with stars, flowers, sun rays, trees and houses. Image Size: 13.5 x 11.5 in. Overall Size: 20 x 14.5 in. Unframed. (B16900)

Lot 258

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Bluelined Snapper" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Federated States of Micronesia Bluelined Snapper stamp issued August 4, 1995. Chris Calle's painting of the Bluelined Snapper is one of a set of four of the beautiful native fish of Micronesia. For centuries, Micronesians have thrived on a variety of food fish harvested from the waters surrounding their home islands. Today, commerical fishing companies have also tapped into the region's abundance of aquatic life. One of the most popular fish caught by such operations is the Skipjack Tuna. Particularly prevalent in the Pacific, these creatures are known to grow very rapidly. However, their life expectancy is only about four years. The Yellow-fin, another variety of tuna, has a reputation as one of the most tenacious game fish. Once it takes the bait, this fish fights the angler every step of the way. The Cave Grouper, on the other hand, is relatively secretive. It inhabits caves and crevices such as those found in Micronesia's steep outer reef slopes. Known to be a loner, the Cave Grouper typically travels singly or sometimes in small groups. A more gregarious resident of Pacific waters is the Bluelined Snapper. This fish occurs in large gatherings, particularly around prominent coral formations, isolated reefs and wrecks. Because this snapper feeds at night, it is among the most popular catches of sportsmen who fish during the evening hours. Image Size: 12.5 x 17 in. Overall Size: 14.5 x 22 in. Unframed. (B15150)

David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "HMS Banff" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 45c HMS Banff ex-USS Saranac stamp issued September 3, 1990. Great Britain was being slowly and mercilessly strangled by shipping losses to German U-boats when the United States made an agreement to transfer some aging destroyers into British possession. In return, The U.S. received rent-free bases in Newfoundland, Bermuda and the Bahamas. The precedent-setting deal sent fifty-one ships to Great Britain, among them ten U.S. Coast Guard cutters. One of these was the USCGC Saranac, which was renamed the HMS Banff. Depicted here flying the colors of the British Royal Navy, the rust and scrape marks on her sides are testimony that "spit and polish" were secondary to fighting a war. Image Size: 14.75 x 23.75 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 27 in. Unframed. (B12588)

Lot 265

David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Invasion of Anzio" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Invasion of Anzio 1944 stamp issued January 22, 1994. By the end of 1943, the Allied advance into Italy had virtually come to a halt. In an effort to prevent their enemies from waging an assault on Rome, the occupying German forces held a defensive position known as the Gustav Line. The invasion of Anzio became the focal point of operation SHINGLE -- an Allied plan to outflank the German line. On January 22, 1944, the U.S. Army's 6th Corps landed on the Italian town's shores. Within a few days, about 70,000 men and 18,000 vehicles were in place. However, the invading forces remained on Anzio's beaches instead of heading to Rome. The Allied troops were soon faced with a relentless barrage of German artillery and aircraft fire. Allied forces suffered a casualty rate of almost 25 percent before they ultimately took Rome. Image Size: 17.75 x 24.75 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 27 in. Unframed. (B14572)

Lot 271

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Giraffes Crossing Grassland" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. Specification Text: This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Zoo Animals 29? Giraffe stamp issued October 1, 1992. Buzzards soar high above the savannah, searching for carrion. Seeking prey, a cheetah scans the horizon. Lions nap in the afternoon sun, while Cape buffalo seek the coolness of area water holes. Many animals live in Africa, but none more unique than the giraffe. Often called "the animal built by committee," the giraffe looks as if it was put together from spare parts. As ungainly as it may appear, the giraffe is nevertheless one of the most widespread, successful herbivores of the African plains. Its extremely long neck and forelegs allow the giraffe to access foliage beyond the reach of other mammals. It has a tongue that can extend 18 inches to gather food, and plate-sized hooves which it uses as weapons to defend its young. A kick from the front feet of a giraffe can quickly kill a lion. As humans can be identified from their fingerprints, so too, can the giraffe be distinguished by its coat -- each has its own unique pattern. While its senses of hearing and smell are highly developed, the giraffe's most acute sense is sight. Giraffes spend much of their time in the company of zebra, elands and wildebeests, with a mutual "lookout for danger" policy protecting all. With its keen eyesight and high vantage point, the giraffe is often the first to spot approaching danger. Usually only one calf is born to each cow. A giraffe calf at birth may stand six feet tall and weigh 130 pounds, nurses and runs within an hour of its birth. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20.25 x 18.25 in. Unframed. (B13968)

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Amoreiras Towers in Portugal" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Portugal Europa 1987 Modern Art - Architecture stamp issued May 5, 1987. From mountain rivers rushing toward the Atlantic coast in northern Portugal ... to lush vineyards and cork groves flourishing among the mountain valleys, there is a balance between the various elements of Portugal's landscape and its architectural legacy. Just as the traditional architecture is in harmony with the natural landscape of Portugal, the modern architecture is in keeping with the busy cities of contemporary times. This artwork features the Amoreiras Towers (Torres das Amoreiras). Located in the capitol city of Lisbon, the building is made up of housing, offices and a shopping mall. The architect of the "Torres das Amoreiras" is Tom?s Taveria. Born in Lisbon, Taveira taught architecture at the University of Lisbon and practiced architecture in Portugal, South Arabia, Arab Emirates, Macao, Angola, and Cabo Verde. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B10983)

J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "French Steam Passenger Express" Signed lower right. Original Oil on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands First Day Cover for the 55c French 4-6-6 Hudson stamp issued August 23,1996. The Class 232.U1 was constructed by Corpet-Louvet for Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer Francais (SNCF) and was a one-of-a-kind steam passenger locomotive. It featured a compound engine with four cylinders instead of the conventional two. The Class 232.U1 differed from other locomotives with compound engines in that the locomotive started out from a complete stop with all four cylinders working under the same steam pressure. Once the train was under way, the steam pressure switched over to a compound engine. In this arrangement, steam is used twice, first passing through the two High-pressure cylinders then through the two low-pressure cylinders. Cruising at speeds over 75 mph, the Class through ran north from Paris to Aulnoye and Lille on trains bound to and from Brussels, Belgium. Constructed in 1949, the Class 232.U1 was the last and most technologically advanced express passenger locomotive built in France. Image Size: 10 x 13.25 in. Overall Size: 13.5 x 17.75 in. Unframed. J. Craig Thorpe (American, B. 1948) "Japanese Class C-62" Signed lower right. Original Oil on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands First Day Cover for the 55c Japanese C-62 Class 4-6-4 Hudson stamp issued August 23, 1996. Class C62s were the largest and most popular Japanese steam passenger locomotive. Forty-nine Class C62s were manufactured from 1948 to 1949 to pull Japan's express trains. They were a remarkable product of Japanese industry and ingenuity -- constructed from wartime Class D52 freight locomotives. The locomotive and tender weighed more than 150 tons. The engine rated at 30,644 pounds of tractive force with a boiler pressure limit of 228 pounds. Class C62s ran on the 3 ft. 6 in. gauge lines of Japanese National Railways and displayed colorful, circular headboards with emblems and names such as Tsubeme (Swallow). They also pulled passenger trains named Dove, Peace and Mount Fuji. Class C62s spent their final days hauling express trains on the island of Hokkaido between the ferry port of Hakodate and capital, Sapporo. Retired in 1971, Class C62s were the ultimate development of Japanese mainline steam passenger locomotives. Image Size: 10 x 13.25 in. Overall Size: 13.5 x 17.75 in. Unframed. (B15424)

Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Northwest Territory" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media on Cold Press Illustration Board Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 17c Flags of Canada Northwest Territory stamp issued June 15, 1979. The Northwest Territories represent more than one third of the land area of Canada. Out of the original Northwest Territories came the Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, as well as the northernmost edges of both Quebec and Ontario. Originally, nearly all of the Northwest Territories were lands granted by the British Parliament to the Hudson's Bay Company. But when the Dominion of Canada was organized, these Territories were taken over by the new government, and all British possessions in the far north were transferred to Dominion control. Bit by bit, the Northwest Territories were developed, and bit by bit, large regions were annexed by neighboring Provinces. Nearly all of the lands in the far north are useless for agriculture, and are so forbidding in their landscape and climate that no settlement exists for hundreds of miles. But the rich mineral resources of the Territories are changing the picture in the far north, and though the Territories are governed directly from Ottawa, more and more responsibility is being transferred to local authorities and to the Territorial government at Yellowknife. As shortages of oil, natural gas, and other mineral resources begin to plague the lands to the south, the vast resources of the Northwest Territories promise to make Canada one of the world's leading energy producing nations. And the lands once described as "the barren reaches of the frozen north" will be opened to development at last. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 17.25 x 15 in. Unframed. (B05409)

Tom McNeely (Canadian, B. 1935) "Marathon Runners and Roman God Mercury" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. $1 Salute to the Olympics stamp issued September 29, 1991. In ancient Greece, near the Alpheus River, stood Olympia -- center of the Hellenic worship of Zeus and site of the first Olympic games. Initiated in 776 B.C. to honor Zeus, the Games consisted of a single footrace which spanned the length of the stadium. Eventually discus and javelin throws, boxing, wrestling, and other track and field events joined the lists. Held in the highest esteem, Olympic champions often became national heroes - their accomplishments lauded by poets and their physical beauty immortalized in marble sculptures. The Games steadily declined after Rome subjugated Greece in 146 B.C., and two centuries later Emperor Theodosius I abolished the Olympics entirely. During the late 19th century, Baron Pierre de Coubertin sought to revive the amateur competitions for the promotion of international brotherhood and goodwill. In 1896 his efforts culminated in the first modern Olympic games held since A.D. 393. Athens hosted this prestigious event, and the Games continue to be held at four-year intervals in various cities throughout the world. Women formally entered the Games in 1912. The design on this artwork features marathon runners, whose twenty-six mile endurance event commemorates a two thousand year-old Greek victory over the Persians. Image Size: 19.5 x 16.25 in. Overall Size: 24.75 x 20.5 in. Unframed. (B12987)
