Violet sat to Watts in 1879, aged only 23, prior to her marriage in 1882 to Henry Manners, later Marquess of Granby and subsequently, from 1906, 8th Duke of Rutland. She was a member of the intellectual circle known as the Souls and an artist in her own right.This is one of a number of studies that Watts made for his portrait of the sitter of 1879. The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has not been lined and has a supplier’s stamp for Winsor and Newton on the reverse. The canvas tension is slightly slack and minor undulations are present at the top and bottom edges. The paint layers are in a good, stable condition overall. The varnish layer has yellowed with age and is brittle with scuffs and scratches across the surface.

The Royal Museum of Scotland held an exhibition of his works in Edinburgh in 2002.Both pictures are executed in oil on linen canvas supports which are unlined and have the supplier stamp for Newman of Soho on the reverse. The dimensions of both paintings have been altered during the painting process with the original tacking edges folded over the reverse of the stretchers. The canvas tension of both portraits is poor with undulations across the surface, emphasised by dust collecting on the front surface. There are small tears and punctures at the edges of both pictures caused by impact from the front. Overall, the paint layers are in a good condition. There are losses surrounding the tears. The varnish layers are in a poor condition being very dull and yellowed; they have also been affected by moisture with white drip marks evident. There are thick layers of dust across the surface.
