Only two institutional copies recorded (British Library and Manchester University). The last auction record we can find was Sothebys in 1970. The North Midland Railway was first proposed by the engineer George Stephenson in 1835 and was granted Parliamentary assent the following year, work starting on the line in 1837 with it opening in 1840. The railway ran between Derby, Rotherham and on to Leeds, connecting some of the prime industrial areas of the north. The map covers the route and much more besides, encompassing the area from Ripon down to Northampton and the Dee Estuary across to Newark, illustrating and naming all other significant lines within that area. There is a cross section of the entire line, "showing the inclinations" or altitudes, running along the lower margin. The North Midland Railway was far from a success in its early years, beset by higher than expected construction costs and intense competition from rival companies. After making drastic cuts, with consequent effects on services, the company merged with the Birmingham & Derby and the Midland County Railways in 1844 to form the Midland Railway. Charles Tee is listed in Robinson's Railway Directory of 1841 as one of the director's of the North Midland Railway, hence the lavish case bearing his name. (1)
