Lot 1098

1921, "30c - 30c" surcharge on 50c. green, featuring inverted "30c" surcharge at right, together with 3c. postage on 2 May 1921 commercial cover from Bogotá to New York, both tied by c.d.s. on departure, and three-lines "Sociedad Colombo-Alemana/De/Transportes Aéreos" handstamp on back. Couple of vertical creases clear away of the franking. Illustrated on page 3 of the Colomphil catalogue by Santiago Cruz and Dieter Bortfeldt. The first scheduled regular flight of SCADTA occurred on 19 September 1921, but experimental flights have been documented from 2 March 1921 onwards to 15 September. The "30c - 30c" provisional surcharge, featured in this and the following lot, is the first provisional surcharge applied and it was used at Bogotá on 2 May 1921 only, with all examples recorded being cancelled by the "Colombia Bogotá - Despacho Correspondencia Interior" datestamp, instead of a SCADTA handstamp. It is believed that no more than one sheet of 48 stamps were surcharged for the mail on 2 May 1921. Only five covers are recorded with this stamp, also representing the earliest usage of the provisional surcharges, of which two, both offered in this sale, are sent to an external destination. Colomphil 1; Scott C23.

Lot 1099

1921, "30c - 30c" surcharge on 50c. green, with first "3" of "30" in the surcharge missing, and national postage 3c., both tied by "Colombia Bogotá - Despacho Correspondencia Interior" c.d.s. on envelope to Chicago headed "El Tiempo" (newspaper of Bogotá), internally carried on experimental flight, showing three-line "Sociedad Colombo-Alemana/De/Transportes Aéreos" handstamp alongside. Stamp with two corner creases and small surface scuff at top right. One of the two covers sent abroad in the restricted group of five covers known franked with the first surcharged adhesive. Colomphil 1; Scott C23.

Lot 1102

1921, "(Hand) Valor 10 centavos (Hand)" on 50c. pale green, double surcharge, trimmed by scissors at left, used on back of large part cover from Neiva via Girardot to Bogotá, cancelled by "Navegación Aérea/Neiva" two-line and "Correo Urbano" large c.d.s. on arrival. Obverse bearing National Post 3c. Manuscript initials passing through the stamp which are not related to its postal use, of little consequence. This variety is very rare on cover, with this usage also representing the latest known use of this "(Hand)" overprint. Colomphil 3c; Scott C19 (var).

Lot 1105

1921, "(Hand) Vaolr 10 centavos (Hand)" on 50c. pale green, exhibiting "Vaolr" variety, vertical strip of three and single, and first issue 50c. pale green, thus paying the four-times rate from the interior to the coast on large envelope to Barranquilla dated 2.11.1921, cancelled by blue "Sociedad Colombo-Alemana/Correos Aéreos/Girardot", with its corresponding national postage fee being paid by 3c. (4), tied by Barranquilla datestamp. Some minor imperfections do not detract from the rarity. 400 stamps were surcharged and only nine covers have so far survived bearing this stamp, this belonging to the more restricted and valuable group of three items not addressed to Behr-Heyder; this cover also exhibits the second largest multiple of this provisional stamp. Colomphil 4; Scott C19 (var). Ex Örjan Lüning.

Lot 1109

1921, "$ 20 c" on 50c. green, inverted surcharge, together with 50c. green without surcharge, both used on commercial cover front, not exceeding 60 grams, from Bogotá to Medellín, endorsed "Por hidroavión", each cancelled by three-lines "Sociedad Colombo-Alemana/De/Transportes Aéreos" handstamp, and National Post 3c. (3), tied by 17.10.1921 datestamp on arrival. Each franking paid its corresponding triple rate. The overall tone spots and imperfections at top are of no importance for a unique item. Used to Illustrate this stamp in the Colomphil catalogue by Cruz & Bortfeldt, as well as in the Gebauer's & Londoño's handbook on page 57, as this is the only known example of this stamp known; the fact that this item also shows a non-surcharged 50c. stamp adds a further degree of rarity for its combination. Cert. Bortfeldt. Colomphil 7. Ex Augusto Peinado.

Lot 1110

1921, "$ 030 c", violet surcharge, placed sideways, on 50c. pale green, tied by "Sociedad Colombo-Alemana/De/Transportes Aéreos" three-lines handstamp on cover from Bogotá via Barranquilla to Berlin, with the required foreign postage being paid by "Correos Nacionales" 5c. pair tied by c.d.s. on dispatch, showing "4-Nov 1921" straight-line alongside. Fewer than ten covers known with this stamp. Colomphil 8; Scott C24.

Lot 1111

1921, "$ 030 c", violet surcharge, placed sideways, on 50c. pale green, as well as diagonal half of 50c. green, both used on fragment of commercial envelope from New York sent via Barranquilla, with the franking tied by SCADTA three-line handstamp and Barranquilla c.d.s. in October 1921. An extraordinary combination of a provisional surcharged stamp and a bisect example from the first issue. Colomphil 8; Scott C24.

Lot 1119

1921, "c 30" surcharge on 50c. green, franking a cover from Bogotá to New York via Barranquilla, cancelled by three "Sociedad Colombo-Alemana/De/Transportes Aéreos" handstamp, additionally franked with "Correos Nacionales" 2c. pair featuring bisect at left, thus paying the 3c. national mail only, being insufficiently franked for external correspondence. Two tears to envelope at top and imperfections in upper margin of adhesive not affecting the design, which in no way detract from this unique item. Illustrated on page 40 of the Colomphil catalogue (2004 edition) by Santiago Cruz and Dieter Bortfeldt. The example known of this surcharge (only stamp and cover recorded), a significant rarity of these provisional issues. Cert. Bortfeldt and P.F. Colomphil 14.

Lot 1121

1921, "$ 050 c" on "VALOR 10 CENTAVOS" on 50c. green, (inverted as always), cancelled by three-line "Compañía Colombo-Alemana/De/Transportes Aéreos" handstamp. According to Eugenio Gebauer, this example originates from the correspondence of the "American Woolen Products Company Inc." of New York; it was used to illustrate this stamp in the Gebauer and Colomphil catalogues. Faint horizontal crease and small thin spot, both being usual faults found in these issues. A rarity, only featuring six stamps and no covers recorded. Signed Kessler. Colomphil 18.

Lot 1122

Illustrated in Colomphil catalogue on page 46. Vertical crease and small tear at left to envelope, of no importance. Of notable significance for the scarcity of this stamp, with only seven covers recorded, and the very infrequent destination. Cert. Bortfeldt, signed Rendon. Colomphil 19; Scott C36. Ex Augusto Peinado.

Cover somewhat creased not affecting the franking. Only 200 examples of this provisional stamp were produced and just seven covers have so far survived. Colomphil 19; Scott C36.

Large envelope from Bogotá to New York, flown from origin to Barranquilla, franked with 50c. diagonal half and single example, plus 3c. of the National Post, cancelled by SCADTA three-lines handstamp and large c.d.s. of Barranquilla in transit. The 45c. franking paid a weight not exceeding 60 grams according to the down river tariff for business correspondence, whereas the other 3c. covered the business rate up to 100 grams. Illustrated on page 48 of Eugenio Gebauer's handbook dedicated to the airmail of Colombia. A unique bisect usage of this stamp, being one of the four "American Woolen Products" covers, all bearing part of an SCADTA adhesive to represent a lower denomination, which were given the attribute of "the greatest find in SCADTA stamps" by Eugenio Gebauer (all are offered in this sale). Gebauer 38a; Scott C15. Ex Philip G. Cole, Eugenio Gebauer and Debby Friedman.

(4) cancelled by "Correspondencia Exterior" postmark. A visually impressive exhibition item, bearing a rare multiple of this stamp. Scott C15.

Lot 1149

Lot 1150

Lot 1159

1874. Envelope from Buenos Aires to Novi (Italy), bearing 1867-73 5c. red for internal postage tied by "J" handstamp on dispatch, and Italy DLR 30c. brown for mercantile ship carriage of the "Lavarello" tied by "Da Buenos Aires/coi Postali Italiani" two-lines handstamp. The Italian adhesive was not considered as franking and the cover was consequently taxed on arrival with postage dues 10c., 30c. and 50c. The DLR stamp has been partly repaired in bottom left corner, of no importance for this highly significant rarity. One of only four covers recorded bearing a mixed franking composed of Argentine- and not-overprinted Italian adhesives, with this example being unique exhibiting the Genoa handstamp for maritime mail originating from Buenos Aires. Cert. Bottacchi. Kneitschel 36.

Faint crease between adhesives of no importance. One of the fewer than five examples known of the second largest used multiple of this stamp, with its fascination being notably enhanced by the rare red cancel. Cert. Maier. SFC 6. Ex Menéndez.
