Theodore Riviere (French 1857-1912) `Salammbo Chez Matho` (Matho kneeling before Salammbo), signed Theodore-Riviere `Carthage` and verso Susse Fes Edt and with struck Susse Freres Editeurs Paris stamp, gilt and bronze patinated and stamped `H` for the foundry Ciseleur Hubert, 41cm high. Based on Flaubert`s novel Salammbo of 1862 showing Matho kneeling before the high priestess. The model exhibited at the Salon Des Artistes Francais 1895 and the Exposition Universelle 1900.

BERGMAN INGRID: (1915-1982) Swedish Actress, Academy Award winner. Vintage signed and inscribed 6 x 8 photograph of Bergman seated in a relaxed three quarter length pose. Photograph by Angus McBean and bearing his credit stamp to the verso. Signed in blue fountain pen ink to the lower white border. Some very slight smudging to the surname. Together with an A.L.S., Ingrid Bergman, one page, 8vo, London, 29th June 1956, to Michael Greenwood, on the printed stationery of the Savoy Hotel. Bergman thanks her correspondent for some flowers and continues `I do enjoy my new film very much, but nothing can take the place of "Joan" in my heart!` Accompanied by an unsigned small 4to printed theatre programme for Joan of Arc at the Stake at the Stoll Theatre, London, October 1954, in which Bergman appeared in the title role. O`CASEY SEAN: (1880-1964) Irish Dramatist. A.L.S., Sean O`Casey, on one side of a correspondence card, Totnes, Devon, 11th May 1942, to B. Rothman, Organising Secretary of the British-Soviet Alliance Anniversary. O`Casey writes, in full, `If my name be any damned use to you for the purpose mentioned, then hang it on the biggest banner you have.` With bold blue ink received stamp, only just affecting one letter of text. Together with J. B. Priestley (1894-1984) English Novelist and Playwright. T.L.S., J. B. Priestley, one page, small 4to, Leominster, Herefordshire, 12th May 1942, also to Rothman, agreeing to his name being added to the list of sponsors although adding `there is very little chance of my being present at the actual meeting`. With blue ink received stamp at foot, not affecting text or signature. VG, 2

ELGAR EDWARD: (1857-1934) English Composer. A.L.S., Ed. Elgar, three pages, 4to, Plas Gwyn, Hereford, 11th November 1908, to Iris, at the publishers Novello. Elgar thanks his correspondent for sending the proofs (no longer present) of the song Pleading for Lady Maud Warrender. The composer continues to refer to a miniature, suggesting that the price be fixed as low as possible, and informs his correspondent that he has returned an orchestral part, further explaining `I can easily conduct on the 23rd from proofs made into book form & propose to get the set I have here stitched up here-I do not send them to you as I had better retain them for reference in case any questions arise during printing`. With purple ink Novello stamp close to, but not affecting signature. VG. Pleading, a poem written by Arthur Salmon, was set to music by Elgar and remains one of his most popular songs. Elgar composed the song within a week at the end of September 1908 and added the orchestration in the following month. It was published in 1908 by Novello as Elgar`s Op 48. No. 1 and dedicated to the composer`s friend Lady Maud Warrender (1870-1945). Warrender was renowned for her fine voice and staged a London performance of Elgar`s Coronation Ode (including the famous anthem Land of Hope and Glory) in 1903 in the presence of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.

H. Pickering, Edward Stone etc. The album also includes numerous postage stamps, First Day Covers and other ephemera (mostly neatly corner mounted to pages and some loose) commemorating space travel and exploration, all collected by Harold Ogden, a member of the International Association of Space Philatelists in the 1960s and 1970s.
