Leeward Islands. 1942 (March) 10/- pale green and pale red on green paper, an unmounted mint block of four with the top right stamp showing the major Frame Plate #44 flaw, damage to ‘TEN SHILLINGS’ and right value tablet. Eric Yendall rates this alongside the Bermuda £1 joined ‘ER’ and ‘White Island’ flaws as the only major frame flaws. Unmounted singles of the basic stamp are scarce, blocks are rare and with the #44 flaw must be very rare. SG 113a (£3200)/CW 12a, H
Leeward Islands. 1942 (March) 10/- pale green and pale red mint Plate block of four, hinged on the selvedge only, HPFs #59 and 60 broken upper and lower right scrolls. Unmounted singles of the basic stamp are very scarce and blocks are rare, with the survival rate of the #59 and 60 flaws being very low. An important block. SG 113a, ad, ae (£14,600)/CW 12, a, b
South Africa. 1913-24 ½d Plate number pieces, mixed hinged/unmounted. Plate 5 four matched corner blocks of 6 with inverted watermark and six other pieces from Plate 5, one with additional strike of perf head in bottom selvedge (this with some slight staining) due to paper fold, leaving bar of colour on lower right stamp; four matched corner blocks of 6 from Plate 6 plus another block of 6 with inverted watermark and another block of 14. Excellent shades. SG 3, b, c, w
South Africa. 1926 ½d used pair on piece, right marginal, showing the black vignettes totally omitted but with a portion of the frame in reverse offset in the vignette of the left stamp. Affixed to piece and cancelled JULES ST/JOHNNESBURG 5 V 47, presumably by favour. Two black impressions of the vignette can be seen on the reverse when viewed against a light source. SG 30 var
South Africa. 1926 ½d black and green corner strip of 5 from lower left of sheet, the left stamp with frame completely doubled and the second stamp with partial double. The stamps are unmounted mint with some imperfections in margin. Ex Smith; sold by Stephan Welz for R77,000 in 1999 (then £8000). With an article by Otto Peetoom on the Union’s rarest varieties. He states only three pieces are known and that ‘it is most certainly rarer than the ½d King’s Head (double print)’. The bottom four stamps in the first column and the bottom two stamps in the second column were affected. A highly important rarity of South Africa. SG 30d (£3250)
South Africa. 1927 2d, 3d, 1/-, 2/6d, 5/- and 10/- in blocks of three pairs each, affixed to a cut-out piece from the Madagascar archive, with a separate piece bearing a horizontal strip of 6 4ds. Each stamp handstamped ‘SPECIMEN’ in violet; tied to the sheet by the 42mm ‘POSTES ET TELEGRAPHS/COLLECTION DE BERNE/MADAGASCAR’ handstamp in red. Unique and a wonderful exhibitor’s item. SG 34-9
South Africa. 1927 brown envelope (204 x 151mm) folded in half and posted registered, locally within Cape Town. Bears 2d horizontal pair, 3d vertical pair, 1/- single stamp and 5/- single stamp with Cape Town CDSs of 7 MAR 27, the First Day of Issue. The envelope has been opened out to display the backstamp, a very unusual item. SG 34, 35, 36 and 38
South Africa. 1939 1/- brown and chalky blue block of two pairs with full gum (hinged on top pair), part Rissik St/Johannesburg 1948 CDS on right pair, the left pair uncancelled. Shows major interrupted print at base of the lower pair, leaving the lower frame omitted on the left stamp and almost omitted on the right stamp; spectacular. Otto Peetoom’s write-up in ‘South African Varieties’ #1 identifies this block as being from R11-12, i.e. the top four stamps from the block of 14 ex Thys Rall. Otto suggests that the original owner may have had the postmark applied “as a form of provenance”. SG 62/CW 11
South Africa. 1933-6 Voortrekker Memorial Fund set of 4 pairs, each handstamped ‘SPECIMEN’ in violet 14½ x 1mm. Affixed to grey card with printed trilingual text; ‘Specimens. These stamps are produced in rolls and sheets on our rotary postage stamp printing machines working on the photogravure printing process in one operation. Goebel A.G Darmstadt’. Also on the card is a pair of ½d Springbok similarly overprinted, and a pair of the ship 1d with an ink line across. Facing paper on front with ink ‘N7- Suid Africa’ in pen. Also a horizontal pair of the ½d and a vertical pair of the 1d Voortrekker with the same violet ‘SPECIMEN’ handstamp. Undoubtedly rare. SG 50-3
South Africa. 1915 part cover front, franked with pair of ½d King’s Heads with Simonstown CDSs of 10th November. Boxed ‘More to Pay…’ marking, folded through this. The deficiency collected by means of a marginal 2d Postage Due stamp, which shows the lower left portion of the stamp (and Jubilee line) omitted due to a paper fold. SG D3
South Africa. 1922-6 2d black and pale violet imperforate top right corner block of 4, showing frame completely omitted on top right stamp and partially on the other three. Variety caused by a fold-over, showing the ‘missing’ frames appearing on the reverse. Unmounted mint, a couple of creases (inevitably) but a wonderful item for the exhibitor. SG D14a var.
