His story has been compared to the Dreyfus affair.Slater, who had several aliases and bogus occupations and who's real name was Leschziner was Jewish, foreign and a petty criminal, which made him an ideal suspect. He was swiftly charged with murder despite flimsy and contradictory evidence. Many considered he had been framed for the murder of a wealthy 82 year old woman, Marion Gilchrist in Glasgow on the 21st December 1908. Slater voluntarily returned from America to clear his name but was convicted on a majority verdict of 9 to 6 after a short trial and sentenced to death. Such was the public outcry that the sentence was commuted to penal servitude for life. Over the ensuing two decades until he was released, the case was hardly ever out of the national media. Even his eventual release seemed unsatisfactory for the conviction was quashed only on the grounds that the trail judge had misdirected the jury. The book is made up of the following items: 1 Autograph letter signed from the Sheriff’s officer to the governor, HM Prison Edinburgh, 7 May 1909, three lines “ please have Oscar Slater ready for removal at 1.25pm to day.” 2 Three autographed letters, signed from his “wife” [ie mistress] Andree Junio Antoin, Paris 25/27/29 May 1909 and one envelope postally used Paris 25 May 1909 with Glasgow circular date stamp on the reverse 26 May 19093 Oscar Slater signed piece four lines headed “then and now” and endorsed by J A Fairley “the above lines were written and signed by Oscar Slater while in prison” 4 M S Inventory of Clothing and Property in cell 942, Oscar Slater D1.6 signed by Mr Slater 5 Religious tract in an envelope addressed “to the Governor HM Prison Glasgow in case there is no reprieve…” 6 Postcard with two religious card messages pasted verso 7 J H Richardson Partner in Dundas & Wilson, Solicitors, autograph letter signed to J A Fairley, Edinburgh 10 July 1928 enclosing a ticket to the Slater trial at the Court of Criminal Appeal 8 Typed letter, signed, to “ friend Slater “ from an evangelist 24 May 1909 9 & 10 Two post office telegrams, 25 May 1909 passages from St John’s Gospel 11 Two wax seal impressions taken from a seal found on Oscar Slater’s person when he was sent to Duke Street Prison, Glasgow (cock crest and motto Opera Tua Deo Committ) 12 Eight various booklets, all religious tracts, several inscribed by the senders
