The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection nummber ZZ-2, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. Very fine condition.
23rd-20th century BC. A mixed group of five bronze seals, all accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state:(T-682) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 56 x 56 x 18mm) This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a central quadrate cross containing a circle set in a circle, with is the inside of a circular band divided into 14 roughly oblong compartments. This in turn is surrounded by a plain outer band. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It has been cleaned and conserved, and save for the usual denting and slight damage to the outer rim, it is in very good condition.'; (T-244) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 64 x 63 x 20mm. This is round with flat face and flat back, on which a handle of inverted V-shape is mounted. The design consists of a compartmented and open-work rosette of eight petals, reaching from an inner circle to an outer plain band. The petals are marked on the back with notched edges. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The metal has been conserved and is in good condition, and the piece generally is well preserved, only the outer rim being a little worn and damaged.'; (T-161) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 51 x 49 x 12mm. This has the shape of an eight-pointed star, with flat engraved face, and back shaped and decorated rising to a handle like twined cord. The decoration on the back makes the points each look like a leaf or similar thing. The design on the face shows as the main item a snake in zig-zag pose with other items around it: three trees(?), two things with shape of arrow-heads, a crescent, and an uncertain depiction. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in very good condition and offers a very rare design.'; (D-50) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 52.5 x 52.5 x 2mm. This has the shape of an eight-pointed star. The flat face has eight small circles, at the bottom of each V-shape on the edge, and each point is hollowed out with drill holes, while the very centre is filled with a flower-like motif. the edges of the points are grooved, and the flat back is covered with depressions of various shapes, while the loop handle in the middle is covered oblong depressions. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c.2300-2000 B.C. It is in fine condition, and it is a rarity to have so much engraved on all sides.'; (R-213) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 45 x 45 x 16mm. This is square, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a loop handle of inverted V-shape. The design is compartmented, but not open-work. It consists of a simple cross creating four smaller squares, each of which is divided into three oblongs in such a way that the oblongs run in opposite directions in adjacent squares. this comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a rare design in metal, and in very good state of preservation.' 266 grams, 53-64mm (2-2 1/2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers D-50, T-161, T-244, T-682, R-213 academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. 23rd-20th century BC. A mixed group of five bronze seals, including four accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (U-613) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 46 x 46 x 43 x 9mm. This bears the shape of the design, which is in three parts essentially the same arranged in a rough circle. The face is hollowed out, and the design is repeated on the back in high relief. In the middle there is a suspension loop. Each of the three parts consists of a recumbent ibex with head forwards and front paws resting on an object not so far identified. At the rear, the animal is being swallowed by a curling snake. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is conserved, and in good condition. It is a rare type and perhaps unique for this design, thus an important seal.'; (U-482) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 38 x 38 x 10mm. This is round, with flat compartmented and open-work face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of loop type. The design consists of an insect joined to a plain surrounding band by head, feelers, legs and tail, and this plain band is surrounded by a second band divided into short segments. this comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. it is an attractive piece for the insect, and is in generally good condition.'; (U-232) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 39 x 39 x 14mm. This is round, with flat compartmented and open-work face, flat back, and a handle on the back of inverted V-shape. The design is not easy to interpret, but it appears to be an abstract rendering of a running small springing animal such as a hare, with big ears up, tail over back, and four legs spread, within a plain outer band. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. the outer rim is a little worn and damaged, but the design is clear. the metal has been conserved.'; (T-463) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 34 x 34 x 13mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, shows a scorpion within a plain outer band. this comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. There is some incrustation on the surface which could be removed, but, apart from slight denting of the outer rim, the piece is in very good condition.'; the rest comprising: one roughly discoid with central nonagon divided into eight sections surrounded by nine circles with strut connecting to each corner of the nonagon, forming a guilloche scalloped border, strap handle to the reverse. 100 grams, 35-51 (1 1/4-2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers U-323 , U-482, T-463, U-613, Z-182, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. Late 3rd-early 2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of mainly bronze stamp seals, some accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: (V-853) 'A Stamp Seal of Silver, 32 x 36 x 17 mm. This bears the shape of the design, with flat compartmented face and flat back on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design is no doubt meant to depict something, but it is not clear to the present writer what the thing is. The edges of the piece are worn down, and there is dark incrustation on the surface, but generally it is in good condition and it is rare for its material. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C.'; (V-362) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 30 x 30 x 12 mm. This bears the shape of the design, with flat compartmented face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design consists of a central Greek cross, and on the end of each arm of the cross a crescent is put. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. There is some incrustation on the surface, which could be removed. generally it is in very good condition.'; (C-23) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 39 x 51 x 24 mm. This is an open work seal with a design consisting of three equilateral triangles, two side by side, the other tete beche and in the middle. There is a large loop handle on the back.This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is rare. perhaps unique, as a type, and in very good condition. The object is made from strip metal with a triangular profile.'; (C-21) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 32 x 33 x 7.5 mm. This is compartmented with a solid back and a handle on the back made from sheet metal. The design consists of two concentric circles within the cross.This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is somewhat incrusted, but could be cleaned, and save for a worn handle is in good condition.' 216 grams total, 28-45mm (1 - 2"). A heater-shaped serpentine stamp seal with pierced lug handle; intaglio scene with seated robed figure and opposed standing robed figure, both with hands raised, faravahar above; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. 6.74 grams, 27mm (1"). From an important London based collection formed 1970-1990s. [No Reserve] Very fine condition.
3rd-1st millennium BC. A group of ten seals, including five accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G.Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (U-46) 'This is a round disc with flat face, slightly convex back, and scalloped outer edge. There is a handle, apparently reattached, of one piece on the back, pierced for suspension. The design shows within a circle a prancing quadruped, apparently a horse, with short tail up and three filling shapes around. Outside the circle is a band of 23 'petals'. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-1800 B.C. It is exceptionally large and in very good state of preservation. Slight damage to the back is the only imperfection. The modelling of the animal is finely done, bringing out the shapes of the body and head in true proportions with only careful modelling and no linear aids. lines trace the outlines of all the hollowed out parts, but they do not contribute to the success of the piece. This is an important work of art from west central Asia, of great rarity'; (T-705) 'Stamp Seal of Green/Black Stone, 24 x 23 x 12mm. this has a flat round face, and back which rises and flares inwards to a pierced lug in the centre. The design on the face is a rosette with four petals and triangles filling the spaces so created. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1000 B.C. It has an attractive design and is in good condition save for wear and a little damage to the edges.'; (Q-50) 'Stamp Seal of White Stone or Fired Kaolin, 16 x 15 x 9mm. This has a flat round face with notched edge. The back is also flat and has in its centre a pierced loop like an arch. The design consists of a simple cross with arms thinning at their ends, and the quarters so created are filled with triangles. This seal comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1700 B.C. The loop is chipped and the object is worn, but the condition is generally almost good.'; (Q-46) 'Stamp Seal of Soft White Stone or Fired Kaolin, 25.5. x 25 x 12mm. This has a flat, round face with notched edge, and the back is also flat, with a loop in the middle like an arch. The design is drilled and consists of a central rosette of five dots, surrounded by eight triangles composed of three dots each. This seal comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. This seal is in very good condition.'; (Q-48) 'Stamp Seal of White Stone or Fired Kaolin, 25 x 25.5 x 13mm. This has a flat round face with notched edge. The back is also flat and in the middle there is a pierced loop like an arch. The design is composed entirely of drill holes: a single one in the middle, and around it six triangles composed of three holes each. This seal comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. It is in good state of preservation.' 183 grams total, 16-71mm (1/2-2 3/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers Q-46, Q-48, Q-50, R-651, R-800, T-705, U-46, V-425, W-376, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. Dr. Bonewitz notes: 'The seals are made from serpentine (3), composition (5), and limestone (2).' [10] Fine condition.
Mainly 4th-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of stone plano-convex stamp seals, discoid in plan, including five accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (Q-47) 'Stamp seal of White Stone or Fired Kaolin 24 x 2 3 x 12.5 mm. This has a flat, round face with 'milled' edge, and the back is also nearly flat with a loop pierced, like an arch, in the middle. The design consists of drill holes: a large central one, and five triangles composed of from seven to ten holes around it. This seal comes from west central Asia, and dates to c. 2000 - 1500 B.C. It is in good state of preservation.' (T-569) 'Stamp seal of White Stone 48 x 49 x 16 mm. This has a round flat face, notched edges edges [sic] that curve in a little, and a convex back in the centre of which is a pierced loop handle of one piece with the rest. In the centre of this handle is an inlaid circle of lapis, and four other such circles are inlaid around the handle. The design on the face is achieved entirely with drill holes and consists of a rosette with four 'petals' and triangular groups of dots filling the spaces left. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in quite good condition, and is a very good example of its kind.' (T-699) 'Stamp Seal of Black/Green Stone 30 x 30 x 16 mm. This is round, with flat face, curving sides, and is a slightly convex back on which there is a big pierced handle in the middle. The design on the face is drilled: an inner circle of 5 dots, one off centre, an outer circle of 11 dots. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. There is a little damage and wear to the edges, otherwise it is in good condition.' (T-893) 'Stamp Seal of Black/Green Stone 53 x 50 x 15 mm. This is roughly round with flat face and convex back, in the middle of which was a loop handle, now broken and replaced by a hole through the stone. The design consists of a rosette with eight petals, between each pair of which is a kind of cross, and beyond these as an outer circle are sixteen dots. This comes from west central Asia and date to c. 3500 - 3000 B.C. It is extremely large for its type and rare, but it is worn and there is scratching on the back.' (V-70) 'Stamp Seal of White Stone 20 x 20 x 10 mm. This is a round disc with 'milled edges' and a loop of one piece on the back. The design, achieved entirely with the drill, consists of a pattern of dots: a central dot, and four groups of four dots around it, each group consisting of one inner dot and three in a curving row beyond it. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. There is some incrustation on the surface, which could be removed, and there is little wear and slight damage to the rim, but generally it is in good condition.' 155 grams total, 20-52mm (3/4 - 2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; item numbers Q-47. T-569, T-699, T-893, V-70, V-381, V-641, V-955, W-299, Y-572; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [10] Fine condition.
3rd-1st millennium BC. A mixed group of ten stamp seals, including four accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (T-580) 'Bifacial Stamp Seal of Green Stone, 15 x 14 x 8mm. This is a nearly square plaque with vertical sides, pierced through the middle. The one side shows a plant in bloom, the other side a star with eight 'rays'. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a nice example of its kind and in very good condition.'; (U-628) 'Stamp Seal of Dark-coloured Stone, 22 x 18 x 8mm. This is bifacial, in the form of a squeezed cylinder pierced through the thickest part. The one side shows a scorpion, the other side a curling snake. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a little damaged, but remains a nice example of its kind.'; (U-177) 'Stamp Seal of Red Stone, 27 x 20 x 10mm. This is very roughly oblong with top narrower than bottom, and is pierced near the top. One face only has a design, done largely with the wheel: a standing human figure in long robe with bottom fringe, with long plait of hair hanging down the back. One hand is raised. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 500-1 B.C. It is a rare type and somewhat crudely done, but in good condition.'; (2006) 'Stamp Seal with two faces of cream stone, 29 x 24 x 33mm. This seal has two oblong faces, the larger one on a tabloid base with groove around the sides, the smaller one on a plain tabloid base, the two being connected by a square pillar with angles at the middles of the sides of the tabloids, and pierced through two of its sides. The larger face shows a horned animal from the side, with fat body and short tail. The smaller face shows a kind of swastika design. This is said to come from west-central Asia, and can be dated from parallels from Anatolia/northern Iraq to c. 1100-800 B.C. It is a rarity, and in good condition.' 124 grams total, 15-41mm (1/2-1 1/2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers 2006, 2917, 4067, T-580, V-139, V-177, V-628, W-273, Z-68, Z-70, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. Dr Bonewitz notes: 'The seals are made from serpentine (6), lapis lazuli (1), limestone (3).' [10] Fine condition.
Drocourt & Co. A 19th century French quarter repeating carriage alarm clock, retailed by Leroy & Fils, Regent Street and Paris, with gorge case, enamelled Roman dial, blued steeled hands and movement striking on a bell, width 3.5in. depth 3.25in. height 5.5in.CONDITION: In somewhat neglected condition, case looks to have been overpainted or re-gilt with a matted finish which is now wearing away, dial with a fine hairline crack running from the top left corner into 55, lettering on the dial is feint and there are other tiny dirt specks throughout, hands look original, slightly oxidised, right side panel has a tiny chip in the lower left corner, escapement probably a later replacement, movement running but not tested for timekeeping, repeat function is not working correctly and the larger hand continuously strikes the bell when the repeat is wound, backplate of movement engraved Retard / Avance with the Drocourt stamp to the left of the bell, numbered 9455 beneath the Aiguilles adjustment, also stamped 9003 in the lower left corner, engraved at the base Repousee Por Leroy & Fils ...., matching number 9003 stamped to the base of the case.
A.B. Savory & Sons of Cornhill. A late Victorian ormolu mantel clock, with trophy, flower and bell husk decorated case, enamelled Roman dial and Sevres style pink porcelain plaques to the base, eight day movement signed by Savory & Sons with JBD stamp numbered 28527/14-7, width 12.5in. depth 5in. height 12in., with associated giltwood plinthCONDITION: Overall a little tarnished with the ormolu somewhat matted and varying in tone from a toffee colour to a light gold, dial in good clean order, does not appear to have ever been glazed, hands look original, porcelain plaques good but slightly out of alignment, plinth looks associated, movement complete but lacks a pendulum and not tested for timekeeping.
A pair of late Victorian Holland & Sons satinwood dwarf bookcases, with brass anthemion pattern back rails, crossbanded tops and two glazed doors enclosing two adjustable shelves, on plinth foot, W.3ft 3in. D.1ft 4in. H.4ftCONDITION: Both slightly faded but still retaining a fair golden satinwood tone with the exception of fronts of the doors which are a little paler, both tops have plate glass covers, actual tops have fine surface scuffing and scratching commensurate with use, a dark wood crossbanding is in place that might be pear wood with a further box and ebony stringing around it. Holland & Sons stamp is to the top edge of the right hand door, both bookcases have a seperate key, however one lock is not working and is currently locked shut, internally the leather fringes have faded from puce down to pale pink tone with traces of the original gilding, equally the inlaid fronts of the shelves have faded where exposed through the glass, slight differences in tone to the sides of the bookcases, all are in good condition other than slight fading, minor scuffing around the plinth feet, overall a handsome pair of bookcases just with some slight fading in places.
