Christian Bernhard Tauchnitz (1816-95) was the founder in 1837 of a Leipzig printing and publishing firm that became famous for its reprints in English of English books, the series being aimed at English visitors or residents on the Continent. The "Collection of British Authors" series began with "Pelham" in 1841, and ultimately included nearly 4000 volumes. Tauchnitz made agreements with authors and publishers for the sole rights to print their works in Germany, whilst agreeing not to sell his editions (originally issued as paperbacks, and selling for about 1/6d) in England or the Colonies. The business was continued by his son, and was finally destroyed by bombing in 1943. (134)
