HILL, Sir Rowland (1795-1879), a.l.s. to A. S. Taylor, dated May 21st 1840, saying that he has his photogenic imitations of stamps, and would like to meet him if he produced more.Sir Rowland Hill is credited with the invention of the postage stamp and conceiving the idea of the modern postal service.
A 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Sword, the 83 cm, curved single edge blade with single broad fuller, stamped initials S.M. to the back and with further indistinct stamp, the steel stirrup hilt with twin tongue langets, ribbed, leather-covered wood grip (scabbard lacking). Overall rusting and pitting to metal parts. Leather covering to grip worn and with holes. Scabbard lacking.

Action works. Grey/brown patching to metalwork. Barrel markings very faint. Bruising to butt end of grip and with later incised initials.
