MILHAUD DARIUS: (1892-1974) French Composer. A.L.S., Milhaud, one page, 4to folded aerogramme blue paper, Oakland, 17th October 1964, to Emmanuel Bondeville secretary of the French Institute, in French. Milhaud explains to his correspondent having read in the newspaper Le Monde his appointment and states `I can then and now send my deep congratulations to you,… you are going to enjoy a rather beautiful home. I did visit it time ago when I accompanied my teacher Widor after a conservatory day, and I was dazzled by such a magnificent building..´ The aerogramme bears to the front an ink stamp with Milhaud´s address in Oakland. PAUL VI: (1897-1978) Pope of the Roman Catholic Church 1963-78. An excellent vintage signed colour 7 x 9.5 photograph by Pope Paul VI, the image depicting the Pope in a formal half length pose, wearing his red pontifical habit. Photograph by Felici of Rome and bearing their stamp to the lower right corner of the image. Signed ('Paulus P P. VI') by the Pope in bold black fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount and dated 12th March 1966 in his hand. With the Papal blind embossed seal alongside his signature. Neatly mounted, VG £800 - 1200Upon his election to the Papacy, Cardinal Montini took the pontifical name Paul VI to indicate a renewed worldwide mission to spread the message of Christ, following the example of Apostle St. Paul. Pope Paul VI reconvened the Second Vatican Council, giving it priority and direction, and implementing its numerous reforms and fostering improved ecumenical relations with Eastern Orthodox and Protestants, which resulted in many historic meetings and agreements. Pope Benedict XVI declared that the late Pope Paul VI lived a life of heroic virtue and conferred the title of Venerable upon him. In October 2014 Pope Francis beatified him in recognition of a miracle attributed to his intercession.
RICORD PHILIPPE: (1800-1889) French Physician. He was the first to prove that syphilis and gonorrhea are not the same disease. Ricord was appointed physician to Prince Napoleon, and later consulting surgeon to Napoleon III. A.N.S., P Ricord, one page, 8vo, Paris, 5th January 1843, in French. The document being a medical prescription, stating `..Gargling…200 grams, Hydrochloric acid 10 drops,..´ Bearing an ink stamp of the “Pharmacy Leseurre, Rue de la Harpe, Paris”. Folded. VAN DONGEN KEES: (1877-1968) Dutch Painter, a member of the Fauves. A.N.S., Van Dongen, one page, oblong 4to, n.p., n.d., Sunday, in French. The autograph text being an acknowledgment of a payment received from his correspondent, the Dutch Painter stating `Well received your payment of 100 frs, Cordially yours, Van Dongen´. Boldly written and signed in bold blue ink, with several ink stains. The document bears at the heading a printed stamp from the Autograph Collection of Dr. Max Thorek, Chicago. PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish Painter. Signed printed folded 5.5 x 8.5 paper pamphlet, entitled “La Colombe de Picasso”, (“Picasso´s Dove”). Signed `Picasso´ in bold dark ink, with his name alone, beneath a printed photograph of a dove. The document contains a printed text to each of the inside pages and to the verso too. To the second page a printed text by Joseph Noiret, in French; to the third page a lengthy text by Christian Dotremont, and to the last a work by René Caluwaert. To the front lower left corner bearing a collection ink stamp. With a very small area of paper loss to the back page, not affecting the text or signature. VG £800-1200Joseph Noiret (1927-2012) Belgian painter writer and poet. Founder of the avant-garde movement COBRA, and of the review Phantomas. Christian Dotremont (1922-1979), was a Belgian painter and poet. A founding member of the Revolutionary Surrealist Group and COBRA movement. Well known for his painted poems.
ALECHINSKY PIERRE: (1927- ) Belgian abstract Artist. An attractive F.D.C., signed and inscribed by Alechinsky, one page, oblong folio card, Paris, 12th October 1985, in French. Signed and inscribed in pencil by Alechinsky (`For Axel, Alechinsky´) and dated 30th March 2009 in his hand. The document being the commemorative presentation of a 5,00 Francs French Republic stamp showing an Alechinsky´s work. With three binder holes to the left removable border. A numbered copy of an attractive document, with a printed short biography of Alechinsky. EX £200-300The stamp is depicting a work by Alechinsky, being a tribute to Michel Butor (1926-2016) a French writer. To the stamp background Alechinsky features a Butor´s manuscript. Butor, as well as Alechinsky, was a passionate of the book the wheel and the snake, an esoteric symbol of the movement and the eternity.
BENJELLOUN ABDELMAJID: (1944- ) Moroccan Writer, Poet and Historian. A.L.S., Benjelloun, one page, folio, Rabat, 2nd October 1993, to Martine Lopez, in French. Benjelloun thanks his correspondent for her letter and states in part `Your magnificent letter will be kept together with the letters I have received from great poets such as André de Bouchet, Guillevic.. Obviously when the street where you live has the name of a poet, you love poetry! There is something like a happy predestination…´ The letter bears to the upper left corner a printed stamp with Benjelloun address and phone in Morocco. Folded. VG £80-100André du Bouchet (1924-2001) French Poet . Eugène Guillevic (1907-1997) Known as Guillevic. One of the better known and most popular French poets of the second half of the 20th century.
WELLINGTON DUKE OF: (1769-1852) Anglo-Irish Field Marshal & British Prime Minister 1828-30, 1834. A.L.S., Wellington, one page, 8vo, Stratfield Saye, 11th April 1841, to General Sir Willoughby Gordon. Wellington promises to convene a meeting of the committee on the Duke of York's Memorial, and concludes '…I will at that meeting suggest an arrangement for the gratification of the Commander of the Royal Military Asylum.' With integral address leaf in Wellington's hand, with a Penny Red postage stamp affixed and bearing a Maltese Cross postmark and also remnants of a red wax seal (small area of paper loss where broken). VG £100-150General Sir James Willoughby Gordon (1772-1851) British Quartermaster-General to the Forces 1811-51. In 1801 the Duke of York laid the first stone of the Royal Military Asylum in Dover, Kent.
SONTHONAX LEGER-FELICITE & POLVEREL ETIENNE: (1763-1813) and (1740-1795), both French Abolitionists Legislators at Saint Domingue. The first civil Commissioners and de facto rulers of Saint Domingue promulgating the total abolition of slavery on August 1793. An interesting D.S., Sonthonax and Polvorel, one page, folio, Port-aux-Princes, 1st May 1793, to vice-Admiral Sercey, in French. The attractive partially printed document states at the heading “French Republic - In the name of the Republic - Civil Commission”, and shows to the base an ink stamp stating “In the name of the Nation”. Sonthonax and Polvorel authorize vice-Admiral Sercey by the present document to `..take all the measures which he will consider necessary in order to keep the peacefulness and discipline on board and to send handcuff to prison cell the insubordinates if he judges convenient, until all passengers will safely reach France..´ Folded. Very small, minor age wear to the edges, not affecting the text or signatures, otherwise VG £80-100Pierre Charles de Sercey (1753-1836) French Admiral and Noble.
EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. A good A.L.S., Edward P, as Prince of Wales, two pages, 8vo, St. James' Palace, 9th May 1921, to Leila Gough-Calthorpe, on the Prince's personal monogrammed stationery. The Prince writes to thank his correspondent and the Commander-in-Chief for their hospitality and for making him very comfortable, adding that he is sorry his stay was so short and remarking 'I would far sooner have remained at Portsmouth these next few days so as to escape all these "Japs" in London who have come at a very inopportune moment & are really a great nuisance just now!' Accompanied by the original envelope (stamp torn away) hand addressed by the Prince to The Hon. Leila Gough-Calthorpe at Admiralty House, Portsmouth, and signed ('EP') by Edward with his initials in the lower left corner. About EX £400-500Effie 'Leila' Gough-Calthorpe (c.1868-?) Wife of Sir Somerset Gough-Calthorpe (1865-1937) British Admiral of the Fleet, Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth, from 1920. Crown Prince Hirohito (1901-1989) visited England during his six month tour of Europe in May 1921, becoming the first Japanese Crown Prince to travel abroad. Upon his return to Japan Hirohito became Regent in place of his ailing father. The Prince of Wales accompanied the Crown Prince on a number of official engagements including the inspection of a Guard of Honour of World War I heroes at the Guildhall and a carriage procession along Fleet Street in London.
YIKUANG, PRINCE QING & LI HONGZHANG: YIKUANG, PRINCE QING: (1838-1917) Manchu Noble and Politician of the Qing dynasty. First Prime Minister of the Imperial cabinet in 1911, & LI HONGZHANG: (1823-1901) also known as Li Hung-Chang. Chinese Politician, General and Diplomat of the Imperial Court and late Qing Empire. Minister and Viceroy. Very rare A.L.S., with red ink Chinese stamp, and beneath `Li Hungsing´, Pechino (Beijing), in Italian, one page, card folio, April 1892, in old Chinese characters. The written text entitled `Cina´ (“China”), in Italian, being a memorial poem of four verses on the occasion of the four hundred years celebration of the discovery of the new continent of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492, Yikuang stating `Four hundred years ago America was discovered by Humans in the very far horizon, on our maps we had the Divine Land, and now the New World, with great extension, as big as the world known till then.´ and further saying `Colon´s feat discovering the new continent deserves veneration from each generation. His fight and his achievement in the middle of the huge extensions of sea deserve praise.´ Further concluding with a question `leaving aside Magallanica and other lands, who will be able to discover the two other continents that the legend talks about?´ The document contains two written sentences in a slightly smaller letter size, explaining what Prince Qing´s statement refers to. The document bears a contemporary translation into English affixed to the verso. Very small overall, minor age wear, otherwise, VG £1000-1500 The poem is written in a very old Chinese language, a dead language not in use since many centuries, but which was kept in the Imperial Court only in the written form. A similar situation to Latin in Europe. Prince Qing refers in a poetic way to the old belief that after discovering America, men would conquer Magallanica. Terra Australis, or Magallanica, was a hypothetical continent first posited in antiquity and which appeared on maps between the 15th and 18th centuries. The existence of Terra Australis was based on the idea that continental land in the northern hemisphere should be balanced by land in the south. When he mentions the Divine Land he probably refers to China also in a poetic way. The year date is written as the eighteenth year of Guangxu throne. Guangxu (1871-1908) was the eleventh Emperor of the Qing dynasty. He ruled, under Empress dowager Cixi who launched a coup in 1898, after which he was put under house arrest until his death.
CLEMENCEAU GEORGES: (1841-1929) French Prime Minister 1906-09. An interesting D.S., G. Clemenceau, one page, oblong 4to, Paris, 23rd September 1870, in French. The carefully written document is issued by the National Guard during the siege of Paris, only four days after it started, and is a voucher for one thousand five hundred military belts. Signed in bold black ink by Clemenceau in his capacity as Mayor of the 18th district of Paris. Also signed by Commandant Hervé of the 154th battalion. Bearing a French Republic blue ink stamp at the base of the document. EX £100-120
ZORRILLA MANUEL RUIZ: (1833-1895) Spanish Politician, President of the Government (1871) under Amadeo I, one of the Leaders of the Spanish Republicanism. A.N.S., on his private printed visiting card, Paris, in Spanish. Zorrilla asks his correspondent to forward a message to Mr. Bouteiller regarding the Sunday lunch plan, explaining that they will not be able to attend it. Together with General Salcedo, an interesting A.L.S., The General Salcedo, one page, 8vo, n.d. [1873], in Spanish. Accompanied by a signed card with his rank in his hand. The letter being a list of the prisoners taken, horses, and arms, as a result of his victory in the Chinchillas battle (10th August 1873) defeating General Contreras. The list including `Prisoners 388 - Weapons taken 276 - Cannons 2 - A flag of regiment 1 - Beasts, Horses, safe box - General Salcedo - Also two trains with 91 wagons and three machines´ and concludes adding `General Contreras uniform´. Also including an A.L.S., by the French consul in Valencia, one page, 8vo, Valencia, 7th August 1873 giving a pass to a French citizen authorizing him to travel and cross the Spanish territory. Bearing a red wax seal and an ink stamp of the Defence and Salvation Board. The three documents, not including Zorrilla´s visiting card, have been neatly affixed to the inside of a folding card. Overall age wear. G, 4 £100-150Amadeo I, King of Spain 1870-73 abdicated in February 1873, after a hard dispute with Manuel Zorrilla, former President of the Government. As a result of the abdication the government troops have to face several uprisings in some provinces, being the Murcia one in July 1873 one of the first. General Salcedo leading the Government regiments defeated the insurgents leaded by General Contreras at the Chinchilla Battle, 10th August 1873.
PITT WILLIAM: The Younger (1759-1806) British Prime Minister 1783-1801, 1804-06. Signed clipped 12mo piece (`W. Pitt´), addressed to G. W. Gunning in Pitt´s hand. The clipped piece has been neatly affixed to a 4to page removed from an album, beneath a printed image of William Pitt also affixed. Together with SPENCER PERCEVAL (1762-1812) British Prime Minister 1809-12. Assassinated. Signed free front envelope, as Prime Minister, oblong 8vo, addressed in Perceval´s hand to David Gordon, Belfast, and dated in London, 6th September 1811 in his hand too. Signed ('Sp Perceval') to the lower left corner. Also bearing a red ink free post stamp to the front. With remnants of former affixing to the verso. Very slightly irregularly trimmed. G, 2 £100-150
PINOCHET AUGUSTO: (1915-2006) Chilean Dictator 1973-90. T.L.S., Pinochet, one page, folio, Head Staff Commandment, Santiago, 3rd June 1993, to the Vice Commandant Chief of Chilean army, in Spanish. The typed document bears at the heading a “Reserved information” printed red stamp. Pinochet in his capacity as Chief Commandant of the Chilean Army informs on the existing budget deficit, over 20 millions, and on the impossibility of achieving and fulfilling the AIDS programme. Pinochet further authorizes the use of $454.581 from the Prevention in Medicine law to cover the AIDS programme expenses. Bearing several official ink stamps to the front and verso as well as several countersignatures. Five file holes and few pinholes to the left border not affecting the text or signature, and a very small area of paper loss to the upper left corner. G £100-150
