Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) - Postcard / Letter - an important Gandhi letter, written in Guajarati on a Yeravda Central Jail postcard where Gandi was imprisoned from 1932: Dear Sister,          I have written you a letter. So I have preserved your letter of 21st July. Your complaint is absolutely true. For the Kund (Pond/Cistern) you wish to be prepared, it will take a good amount of time for it to be completed. Meanwhile, you should take bath in the Sabarmati Ganga every day. If you will do this, then they will give your Darshan (Sight) soon.  Men are really weak, but the women should become strong. And this is in their hands only. And they will become strong. As the men have arranged their own convenience, the women will also arrange their conveniences on their own strength. Thus there are many secrets if try to solve them. But what can be done when there is no will to achieve something. (He has written a proverb of Gujarati which means “who doesn’t have a will, he/she always find faults in everything”). Blessings from Bapu. Shree Nandubahen Dr. Kanuga’s Bungalow, Ellis Bridge, Ahmedabad. [B.B. (Illegible)] Written in black ink, to both sides, addressed in Gandhi's hand. Stamped with an official Yeravda Central Jail stamp, and signed by an official in red. Postmarked 2nd September 1932. Folded, one corner separated but present. Measures 14x9cm Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British Rule, and in turn inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi's birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Nonviolence. Gandhi is commonly, though not formally, considered the Father of the Nation in India, and was commonly called Bapu (Father). Provenance - from the collection of Dr Balvantrai N. Kanuga, Gandhi's personal long-term physician and friend.

Mina Nasik Road Date: 3/4/34 To Jitendra  I received your letter of date 29/03/34. I had written a letter to your elder uncle on 22nd of the previous month. In which I had enclosed the letters to you and Narendra. I don’t know whether they received those letters or not. You ask them and reply me. Also write me when your examination will complete and when you are coming to Ahmedabad. Will Dahyabhai do the task you have assigned to him? Write me if it is cannot be done. But I assume that he will be able to do it and will not need my help. Hope you and Narendra both will be going to Ahmedabad together. I hope Narendra’s exam is currently going on. Both of you please write to me before going. I have sent your message to Manibahen. Her reply letter will come in two-three days. Dahyabhai came this Saturday, but your letter came after he has left. Patel was later moved to a jail in Nasik, and refused a British offer for a brief release to attend the cremation of his brother Vithalbhai, who had died in October 1933. He was finally released in July 1934 Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel (31 October 1875 – 15 December 1950), endeared as Sardar, was an Indian statesman. He acted as the Home Minister during the political integration of India and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947. One of Mahatma Gandhi's earliest political lieutenants, he organised peasants from Kheda, Borsad, and Bardoli in Gujarat in non-violent civil disobedience against the British Raj, becoming one of the most influential leaders in Gujarat. Vallabhbhai Patel (1875-1950) – Letter - an important letter, handwritten in Gujerati with an official Nasik Road Central Prison stamp to top, written whilst Patel was imprisoned. The letter mentions Gandhi (Bapu) and hints at the important friendship between the two;  Nasik Road, Central Prison Date: 2.8.33 Dear Sister,             Yesterday, we have been brought here to visit Nasik at 3 or 4 o’clock. Lacs of people from remote places came here to do the Shraddh rites spending their own money. And the government has brought me here on their own money. The tour of [illegible] completed and now the tour of Nasik started. If you ask me why they brought us here, then I am unable to answer anything about that. But I can just guess that they have me brought here to separate from Bapu as he might be coming here. There is no other reason. If I had been together, I would have been able to take care of Bapu. But nothing happens as per our wish. The weather here is able to cure the ill people also. Bapu is at Ashram, so it might be very terrible there. But what can be done, after all he is Bapu.  The rain is not stopping since we came here. Already 21 hours passed. I have sent your letter to Maniben. Now I hope her letter should come in this week. [Illegible] will be able to meet you after he gets out in few days. My health is fine. Do not worry about anything. Sincerely, Vallabhbhai’s greetings. Written in black ink to both sides of the folded sheet, with some corrections. Small area of loss to the lower right corner. Vallabhbhai Patel (1875-1950) – Letter - two handwritten letters on the same sheet, written in Gujerati, featuring a Nasik Road Central Prison official stamp to top. The first letter references Gandhi and a visit he has made to the recipient:  Central Prison Nasik Road Date: 24.9.33 Dear sister Nanduben, I have got your letter. I came to know about the thieves entered in the house. The good thing is that there is nothing in the house that thieves can steal. So there is nothing that can make us tensed if they steal something from that. Also as Sumiya is not there, so there is no need to keep the jewellery and cash, and that is why we can sleep worry-free. Maniben reached Mumbai and met Bapu. But she has been called to meet [illegible], she wrote that. She is coming here to see me on Tuesday. It is good that you are outside currently. Improve your health. Maniben will come to you after meeting me. (Bhai) Brother has come here, do not worry about him. What to worry.  Please inform Haribhai and Lilavatiben about them. I got the news from the newspaper that Bapu came to your place. You again got the benefit of his Darshan (sight). For sometimes they will be at Vardha, then don’t know what happens. The air (atmosphere) here is very good, so our health will be good. The nose pain is getting reduced here. And if the God wish, it will go away.  Please keep writing letters. Vallabhbhai Whilst the second letter referencing a protest: Dear brother, Balwant Rai Balubhai has given the news of [illegible]. We receive the letters of Dada (grandfather). It seems that the problem of election is fixed. Chandubhai is well. He will now enjoy as we are together and now his health will improve. My health is well. It seems my health is improved due to the weather here. I believe that more protest will be there. Maniben is coming here on Tuesday. It seems Jitu wants to meet me and Sumiya (Sumitra). So I believe he will come here in a few days. Hope all the dear ones are happy. Give my regards to everyone. Sincerely, Vallabhbhai’s salutation. Vallabhbhai Patel (1875-1950) – Letter - two handwritten letters on the same sheet, written in Gujerati, featuring a Nasik Road Central Prison official stamp to top. The first letter reads:  Central Prison Nasik Road, Date: 22.10.33 Dear Sister, I received your letter. It seems from this letter that Jitu has come to Ahmedabad. He is at home now so he will be cared good. Maniben informed yesterday about the operation (surgery) happened on Haribhai. I also came to know that Lilavatiben is also there. I have wrote him a letter. I have written a letter saying to write one letter every day till Haribhai is recovered. But what can we do if it is tha matter against his nature? We both hope that he will be recovered very soon. The poor Jayantilal was really a good boy. Jitu has lost a good friend. In this world, it is the matter of fortune to have a good friend. It happens rarely but this world is not for good people. Virtuous people why stay here now? This is the ocean to wash the sins of sinful people. Whose sins are washed away from here, they go from here. What to be sad about it? It is to be happy if we understand, because if a person gets released from this sin is considered as good. Death is the entrance of liberation. We feel grieved because of our ignorance. In fact we should be happy that one of our beloved person released from the binding. Maniben and Mrudula are goind to Vardha on this Tuesday. All are going together. Jitu was used to inform us everything writing letters when he came.  I also received letter of Sumitra. Our time passes and we even don’t know about it. Two years is going to complete after about a month. There are many changes (transformations) happened outside. Inside we are having the same days and the same appearances. There is no change, yet the time keeps doing its duty.  The health of both of us is good by the grace of God. Bhai (brother) has left some time now. As the four months complete, he will be able to get into the open air. Only God knows when we will meet. Today I got a letter from Ambalalbhai. It is some better there at Sarladevi. The tonsils have increased so I always had a little fever. The doctor says so. Says about to cut it going Europe in next summer. But currently everything is good. They will leave at date 25th and will arrive at Mumbai on date 6/11/33, as they write. Hope your health is good. I have received the letter of Jivanlal master.  Sincerely, Vallabhbhai’s salutation. The second letter reads: Dear Balvant Rai, I received your letter. Please do a good check-up of Jitu and let me know the status in the letter. Maniben is doing some experiments with milk and buttermilk currently. It seems it is suggested by Dr. [illegible]. But just check there are no other issue in the body, so it’s not a worry. The result of the Kotha election is considered to be so-so. It didn’t happen good that Vadibhai could not make it but it happens. And if someone else is left out, then he/she will fight, so rather it is good that Vadibhai left-out. He will not feel sad. Manilal Mohanlal met me yesterday. He told something about hospital. Now the Chinai will come. Hope your health is good. Thank you, Vallabhbhai’s salutation. Stamped to top of both letterheads 'Superintendent - Nasik Central Prison' with an official's signature in pencil. Written in black ink to both sides of the folded paper. Folds, some pin holes, a small tear and tape repair. 17cm x 20cm, when unfolded. Upon the failure of the Round Table Conference in London, Gandhi and Patel were arrested in January 1932 when the struggle re-opened, and imprisoned in the Yeravda Central Jail. During this term of imprisonment, Patel and Gandhi grew close to each other, and the two developed a close bond of affection, trust, and frankness. Their mutual relationship could be described as that of an elder brother (Gandhi) and his younger brother (Patel). Despite having arguments with Gandhi, Patel respected his instincts and leadership. In prison, the two discussed national and social issues, read Hindu epics, and cracked jokes. Gandhi taught Patel Sanskrit. Gandhi's secretary, Mahadev Desai, kept detailed records of conversations between Gandhi and Patel. When Gandhi embarked on a fast-unto-death protesting the separate electorates allocated for untouchables, Patel looked after Gandhi closely and himself refrained from partaking of food. He served as the first Deputy Prime Minister of India from 1947 to 1950. He was a barrister and a senior leader of the Indian National Congress, who played a leading role in the country's struggle for independence, guiding its integration into a united, independent nation. He was one of the conservative members of the Indian National Congress. In India and elsewhere, he was often called Sardar, meaning "chief" in Hindi, Urdu, and Persian. He was appointed as the 49th President of Indian National Congress, organising the party for elections in 1934 and 1937 while promoting the Quit India Movement.
