The miniatures depict (f. 1r) Solomon enthroned with a group of courtiers beside him insructing his son Rehoboam in an architectural setting with a glimpse of a hilly landscape visible through an open door; (f. 47r) Solomon enthroned between two groups of courtiers (or students?). behind them a wall and behind that glimpses of landscape; (f. 64r) Solomon seated at a large desk writing on a scroll in an architectural setting with shelves of books high up on either side with lansdcape visible through a window above. The three miniatures are in similar architectural borders predominantly in gold with coloured pillars on either side and a tasseled cord on the right on which a small golden manikin is climbing at the foot a gilt pedestal on which is a panel or scroll with 4 lines of text. Provenance: from the La Rochefoucauld family library with signature at foot of first page very similar to that found in books in the Bibliothèque du Château de la Roche-Guyon sold by Sotheby`s in Monaco 9th Dec 1987 (cf lot 753) though unlike the books in that sale this manuscript has neither the library stamp on title nor the family arms on the covers.

Bonomi (Joseph) Ceiling Design Fisherwick Park pen and watercolour 490 x 685mm. 19¼ x 27in. scale at foot repaired tears and small losses at sheet edges verso with the small ink stamp of the RIBA (where the drawing was on deposit) endorsed in pencil “Returned to owner”. ***Provenance: By descent from Joseph Bonomi to the present owner. A group of drawings by Bonomi from this collection was sold in these rooms 1 June 2000 lots 80-87. Arthur Chichester Baron Fisherwick later 1st Marquess of Donegal (1739-1799) bought the Tudor manor house of Fisherwick and rebuilt it as a grand Palladian mansion. Bonomi was engaged in 1787 and designed a summer house for the Park as well as furniture and this ceiling for the principal drawing room of the house. The design provides alternatives for the cornice frieze and borders surrounding the three painted panels. The project was a collaboration between Bonomi and his friend J.F.Rigaud whose paintings with its centrepiece of Apollo in his Chariot completed the ceiling. The stucco work was by Joseph Rose and the colouring and gilding by Pastorini and Borgnis. The house was demolished 1814-1816. This is the remaining portion of his extensive collection of the stamps and postal history of Germany.

Scott`s Expedition to the South Pole 1910-13 An important Collection of Documents and artefacts relating to the Terra Nova and Robert Falcon Scott`s Final Expedition to Conquer the South Pole. The British Antarctic Expedition of 1910-13 led by Robert Falcon Scott aimed to be the first group to reach the South Pole. The party travelled on board the supply ship Terra Nova. The items offered here were obtained by direct descent from Leading Stoker R.N. Edward Archibald McKenzie and include items given to him when he lectured after returning from the Expedition. The Expedition comprised seven officers, including the Captain of the Terra Nova, Edward R. G. R. Evans, twelve scientists and fourteen men; with an additional ship`s complement of thirty two including McKenzie, making sixty five in total. After returning from the Antarctic McKenzie was a Policeman for 25 years. In the Great War he served briefly in the Grenadier Guards before transferring to the Navy. He qualified for the Antarctic Medal and the British War Medal. He was interested in Amateur Dramatics and was a good musician. He was a very competent model maker producing the scale model of the Terra Nova which has been on display at the Science Museum. The 1/42nd scale model was used by the makers of the film `Scott of the Antarctic` in 1948. One of the most poignant items is the diary or log written by McKenzie which includes an entry for February 4th 1911 when they encountered the Norwegian ship Fram in McMurdo Sound and berthed three yards to the south…. A later entry relates the return of the Terra Nova to McMurdo sound to receive the news of the death of the final party led by Scott. Scott`s heroic failure has passed into legend as he reached the Pole only to discover that the Norwegian team led by Roald Amundsen had preceded him by 33 days. Among items sold are McKenzie`s personal log; a cruet set and milk jug from the Terra Nova; letters and a loose postage stamp used by the expedition; signed and dedicated photographs by Herbert George Ponting, FRGS (1870-1935); Terra Nova Naval hat bands; a postcard signed by the Captain of the Terra Nova to McKenzie; a dedicated copy of Ponting`s seminal work; two naïve but remarkable water colours of the scene at McMurdo sound painted on the voyage; an autograph album started at the founding of the Antarctic Club in 1929 containing the names of many Antarctic Explorers including some twenty members of the fatal expedition. The Terra Nova sailed from Cardiff on the 15th July 1910 with Scott joining the ship in South Africa. On reaching Melbourne Scott left the ship to raise funds. Waiting for Scott was a telegram informing him that he was in a race with the Norwegians. Arriving off Ross Island on 4 January 1911, the Terra Nova proceeded to McMurdo Sound, where both Discovery and Nimrod had previously landed. The rest of the story has passed into folklore. The first edition was published by Raduga in 1926. The collaboration between Marshak and Lebedev was emblematic of the intense creative relationships between author and artist during this period. Marshak was a poet, satirist and translator of English literature, becoming the hugely influential editor of the Leningrad board of OGIZ, the State Publishing House. Marshak and Lebedev collaborated on over 50 titles, many for children, of which Bagazh is one of the best-known.
