Lot 256

c1900, the signed white dial, 45mm diameter, with black Roman numerals, blued spade hands, subsidiary seconds register at 6 o’clock and chemin de fer chapter ring, unsigned and unnumbered crown wind mechanical movement with hand setting button at 1 o’clock, the movement marked with pheon stamp and ‘D45988’, case, 55mm diameter, verso screw down, marked ‘D’, interior stamped ‘G5’Footnote: William Ehrhardt opened a workshop at 30 Paradise Street, Birmingham in 1855 and by 1862, he had opened a second one. He exhibited at the 1862 International Exhibition in London and the firm subsequently moved a further two times to larger premises. By 1880, the firm was manufacturing 500 watches a week and by 1898, they had opened a retail shop in London. This particular model, apparently known as ‘the rabbit killer’ due to its size and weight, was possibly made for the Boer War.
