Lot 265

1924-28 1½pi orange and black upper right corner block of six (2 x 3) with plate number '1' and sheet number ‘0187‘, showing very clear evidence of the extraordinary ‘cracked duty plate‘ variety (SG 107 var), fresh u/m. with partial doubling of ‘CYPRUS‘ on both stamps in row 2, while ‘1½ PIASTRES‘ is partly doubled on the right stamp in row 3, with confirmatory breaks in the black Jubilee lines at right. The centring of the duties also shows unexpected variation, with the black shifted upwards on row 1, ‘CYPRUS‘ only shifted upwards in row 2, and ½â€˜ PIASTRES only ‘down‘ on row 3. A splendid and scarce positional piece such serious plate deterioration is likely to have been quickly noticed and repaired, as it would have affected the efficiency of printing. Such a variety is briefly referred to in the Handbook
