GRIEG EDVARD: (1843-1907) Norwegian Composer. A good A.L.S., Edvard Grieg, two pages, on two different leaves, 8vo, Copenhagen, 25th March 1900, to Mr. Louis Diemer, in French. Grieg states in part `I take this occasion to introduce you to my compatriot and bearer of the present letter, Mr. Thor Hals, one of the owners of Hals Brothers Company, piano manufacturers at Christiania (Norway), whose musical instruments are among the best in the north..´ Grieg further strongly recommends Hals´ pianos, refers to a Paris exhibition of these pianos, and expects his correspondent´s approval. Accompanied by the original envelope, hand addressed by Grieg. Also including a printed small 12mo visiting card of Thor Hals, a Norwegian piano manufacturer. The letter, envelope and visiting card bear a collection ink stamp to the upper left corners. The document bears several tape repairs to the borders, only affecting a few letters and the paraph signature, and a small tear to the centre fold edge. MAMONTOV SAVVA: (1841-1918) Russian Industrialist and Patron of the Arts. A good set of three A.L.S., `Sawa Manontoff´, two of four pages each and one of two pages, 8vo, October to December 1907, to Albert Carré, in French. The letters bear to the upper left corner an ink stamp saying “Sawa Mamontoff - Moscou´. Mamontoff responds to his correspondent´s questions, as per Rimsky-Korsakov´s recommendation, related to the mise en scene and costumes of Snegourochka (`The Snowmaiden´), 1882, and states in part `You want to make the Russian opera known in France, and you have chosen Snegourotschka of Rimsky Korsakoff. Also the Great opera Sadko. I have been honoured to take in charge the premiere of the two works at the private Opera theatre in Moscow. Considering the poetry and charm I prefer Snegourotschka because the text and topic is by our great poet Ostrowsky…´ Mamontov refers on multiple occasions to Rimsky-Korsakov, his operas and mises en scene on these lengthy and of very interesting content letters. Together with an A.L., in the hand of Rimsky-Korsakov´s secretary, two pages, 8vo, St. Petersburg, 17th October 1907, to Albert Carré, in French. Rimsky-Korsakov forwards Mamontoff´s address and recommends his correspondent to contact him regarding the mise en scene and costumes of his opera Snegourochka. Also including a set of four A.Ls.S., `Halperine´, three pages each, one 8vo and three 4to, St. Petersburg, November 1907, to Albert Carré, in French. The three letters report on Rimsky-Korsakov´s opera, and refer also to the Opera Comique of Paris, to Diaguileff who is in charge of the mise en scene proposal, etc… A full set of eight letters of very interesting musical content. VG £80-100Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) Russian Composer, a member of the Five Group. Albert Carré (1852-1938) French Theatre and opera Director. For over 50 years Albert Carré was the most prominent figure in the theatrical and musical life of Paris.

CARUSO ENRICO: (1873-1921) Italian Tenor. An excellent, and unusually large, signed and inscribed 14 x 19 photograph by Caruso. The original well-known photograph by Herman Mishkin depicting the Italian tenor standing, in a full length pose, in costume as Canio in Leoncavallo´s opera Pagliacci (1892), one of his most famous roles, holding his clown drum. Signed and attractively inscribed to the centre of the drum `Alla gentile amica Anna Case in signo di ammirazione ed amicizia - Enrico Caruso´, in Italian, also dated in his hand 11th April 1917. The photographer´s mount bears to the right bottom corner the Mishkin Studio stamp. VG £2000-3000Herman Mishkin (1870-1948) Russian-born American Photographer. He specialized in photographing Opera Singers. Anna Case (1888-1984) American Soprano. Case recorded extensively the very first Thomas Edison records tests. Case sang the premiere of Boris Godounov in 1913 at the Metropolitan.

GALEN CLEMENS AUGUST VON: (1878-1946) Count von Galen. German Catholic Cardinal. Bishop of Munster 1933-46. During WWII, von Galen led Catholic protest against Nazis, denounced Gestapo arrests and persecution of the church. He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. A good and scarce D.S., `+ Clemens Augustinus´, one page, 4to, given at the monastery, 12th July 1942, to Camillo Herrmann, in Latin. The partially printed attractive document bears the heading `Clemens Augustinus - Bishop of Munster´, beneath a printed monogramme of the Munster diocese, and is the designation of Camillo Herrmann as priest. Bearing a red ink stamp with the printed text "Clemens Augustinus - Episcopus Monasteriensis", to the bottom left corner. Folded to the centre with an extremely small tear to the left edge, otherwise VG £400-600

CHAPTAL JEAN-ANTOINE: (1756-1832) French Chemist, Physician and Statesman. The Chaptalization in the art of wine-making is due to him. A good A.L.S., `An. Chaptal´, two pages, 4to, Montpelier, 23rd October, [1795], to Parisian bookseller Deterville, in French. Chaptal refers to the new revised edition of his work `Eléments de Chimie´, stating in part `It is now close to two months that I have not received any new pages of our edition.. I have read again the first volume… It is essential that I see the proof sheets, I promise that I will return them to you one by one, which will take in total 14 days..´ further saying `Therefore, send me all which has been printed since then…and do not forget my little requests which I listed on my previous letter.´ Paper with watermark. With blank address leaf bearing ink post stamp, with very small area of paper loss due to the opening. Small water staining and overall, minor age wear. G £250-350Eléments de Chimie was Chaptal´s first major scientific treatise, in three volumes, edited in Montpellier, 1790. His treatise brought the term "nitrogen" into the revolutionary new chemical nomenclature developed by Lavoisier. The three volumes were published by Déterville in Paris in 1796.

CHAUMETTE PIERRE GASPARD: (1763-1794) French Politician during the revolution period. He acted as prosecutor on the Girondists trial in 1793, and made a leading contribution to establishing the Reign of Terror. Chaumette held strong anti-monarchy views before the National Convention. A good D.S., `Chaumette´, one page, 4to, Paris, 24th February 1793, on the Commune of Paris printed stationery, to the secretary registrar of the Commune, in French. Chaumette in his capacity of prosecutor of the Commune reports what has been agreed by the assembly `..the assembly of the Gravilliers section agrees to fix 30.000 as the annual retribution to the Mayor of Paris..´ With blank address leaf. Bearing to the fourth page remnants of a former seal. Also bearing to the front bottom right corner an ink stamp of the prestigious Crawford collection. Small professional repair to the verso, otherwise VG £300-400

RABAUT JEAN-PAUL: (1743-1793) Jean-Paul Rabaut Saint-Etienne. French Revolutionary and Convention member. Leader of the Protestants. Guillotined. A.N.S., `J.P.Rabaut´, one page, oblong 4to, Paris, 23rd March 1793, to M. Gush, in French. The document being a five lines receipt, stating `I have received from M. Gush the amount of six hundred sterling as payment on account for M. Panckoucke´s mandate..´, referring to the Parisian editor who published Rabaut´s last work `Précis de l´Histoire de la Revolution Française´. The document has been professionally affixed to a larger sheet. To the verso showing an ink stamp corresponding to Dr. Max Thorek, Chicago, former collection. VG £200-300

LAKANAL JOSEPH: (1762-1845) French Politician. Member of the National Convention 1792-95. He voted for the execution of King Louis XVI. Lakanal is well remembered when, as President of the Education Committee, he introduced many important changes in the French educational system. Rare A.L.S., `Lakanal - from the Institut of France - Doctor in Sciences and Literature´, three pages, 4to, Magny, n.d., [1808], to Monsieur Le Rat de Magnetot, prefect of Andelys, Eure, in French. A lengthy and interesting letter full of complaints and reproaches to his correspondent´s behaviour, stating in part `..I am seated on the last step.. comfortably.. I have been assured that during your one before last trip to Paris, you have been intriguing talking to a half-god of the Jour, in order to leave me standing and uncomfortable…´ further saying that such comments do not match with his correspondent´s kind messages, making a parallelism with Cyrano-Bergerac, and stating `..It is easy to raise up your soul, high enough so such abject slanders cannot reach you.. Isn´t it useful that larvae exist? Nightingales eat them and sing even better: I do not sing, and have never crawled..´ With address leaf in Lakanal´s hand to the fourth page with a small area of paper loss due to the opening of the letter, also bearing an ink post stamp and remnants of a former red seal. Very small overall, minor age wear and creasing, otherwise G £600-900In 1815, after the battle of Waterloo, Lakanal went into exile to the United States. He became a planter in Alabama, owning slaves, and was appointed president of the University of Luisiana which he reorganized, today know as Tulane University.

The document is issued by the Army of Italy, Infantry Brigade Battalion, and is a two months leave pass given to Captain Codron while passing by Lyon `..to deal with his own personal affairs, after which period he will have to return to his corps..´ Approved and countersigned by Generals and Chiefs of Battalion and Brigade Emmanuel Rey (1768-1846), François Legendre d´Harvesse (1766-1828) and Louis Marie Auvray (1762-1833). Showing an ink revolution army stamp to the left border. With edges slightly trimmed, otherwise G £150-200

OUDINOT & SOULT: Nicolas Oudinot (1767-1847) Marshal of France. Duc de Reggio, & Jean de Dieu Soult (1769-1851) Marshal of France, Duc de Dalmatie. An excellent double signed L.S., `Oudinot´ and `Le M.al Soult´, one page, 4to, Arras, 12th July 1805, to General Andreossy, in French. The partially printed document is issued by Oudinot in his capacity as General of division and bears at the heading the Imperial coat of arms. Oudinot sends a request to his correspondent, which he expects to be forwarded to Marshal Soult `..8 to 10 cavalry soldiers appointed to my headquarters..´ To the left border, Marshal Soult annotates three lines in his hand establishing who will cover the service requested. The document bears to the bottom right corner a stamp of the prestigious Crawford collection. VG £200-300

MARIA CHRISTINA OF AUSTRIA: (1858-1929) Queen consort of Spain 1879-85 as spouse of King Alfonso XII. She was Regent of Spain since the death of her husband and birth of her son King Alfonso XIII 1885-1902. D.S., `Yo la Reina Regenta´ (`I the Queen Regent´, one page, large 17 x 25 folio, San Sebastian Palace, 21st August 1893, to Waldo Ferrer y Garayta, in Spanish. The partially printed document being a title given to Waldo Ferrer y Garayta, appointing him Commander of the Royal order of Charles III. The document bears an attractive printed large vignette of King Charles III, reproducing his portrait to the crowned heading, the blessed cross of the order at the base, and is entitled "D. Alfonso III, by the grace of God and the Constitution, King of Spain, and on his behalf while minor, Da. Maria Cristina, Queen Regent". At the date of the present letter, King Alfonso XIII is only seven years old. Countersigned by the Grand chancellor, Marquis of Rocamora and Duke of Rivas. Also bearing a large blind embossed seal at the base and a large and attractive contemporary post-stamp and ink stamp to the right upper edge. Few small stains to the borders and small tear to the upper edge not affecting text or signatures, otherwise about VG £150-200

WILHELM II: (1859-1941) German Emperor & King of Prussia 1888-1918. Autograph full addressee by Wilhelm II to a large oblong 4to envelope, with an ink stamp dated in Berlin, 28th July 1905, to Admiral von Tirpitz, in German. Boldly written large letters `To His excellency - the State Secretary of the Empire Navy Office - Admiral von Tirpitz - certified mail - Sankt-Blasien´. The envelope bears a red wax imperial seal to the back, above a very fine and attractive richly embossed Imperial coat of arms. The envelope is fully open for better presentation. Two tears to the right edge not affecting the text. VG £100-150Alfred von Tirpitz (1849-1930) German Grand Admiral, Secretary of State of the Imperial Naval Office. Tirpitz took the modest Imperial Navy in the 1890s and turned it into a world-class force that could threaten the British Royal Navy.

The King states in part `..You must be for sure aware of the prompt arrival of a special envoy from Turkey.´ further asking him to take all the necessary measures to welcome and accompany him to Palace in Warsaw. With blank integral leaf. Bearing a collector ink stamp to the front left lower border. Folded. VG £250-350

Signed in bold blue ink `Margaret Thatcher´, to a clear area of the colour printed envelope front. The document presents in a very attractive way a coin first day cover. Also signed by Denis Thatcher (1915-2003) Husband of Margaret Thatcher. Timekeeping was the subject of this celebratory coin edition limit. This issue features the first ever Royal Mail Millennium stamp. EX £100-120

[NICHOLAS II & FEODOROVNA ALEXANDRA]: Nicholas II (1868-1918) Emperor of Russia 1894-1917, and Alexandra Feodorovna (1872-1918) Empress Consort of Russia, wife of Tsar Nicholas II. The last Tsarina of Russia, known for her notorious friendship with the Russian mystic Rasputin. Both assassinated. A very fine 4 x 6.5 cabinet card photograph, unsigned. The Levitsky image, from Saint Petersburg, shows the Tsar seated and the Empress standing alongside, both wearing their coronation ceremony robes. Beneath the image bearing the embossed silver logo of "Levistsky - Photographers of His Imperials Majesties, St. Petersburg", in French. To the verso showing also the printed name and address of photographer Levitsky, telephone 2310, Kazan street, Saint Petersburg, in Cyrillic and French, with an ink stamp in Cyrillic. The coronation robes being the same used the first time by Michael Romanov, first of Romanov´s Tsars, crowned in 1613. Small remnants of former paper affixing to the upper border verso, otherwise VG £400-500
