The Convention of Peking comprised three treaties concluded between the Quing Dynasty and Britain, France and Russia in 1860, regarded by the Chinese as the 'unequal treaties' due to their one-sided terms. The Treaty of Tientsin which had been signed in June 1858 between France, Britain, Russia and the United States on one side and the defeated Qing Dynasty on the other, opened up Chinese ports such as Chefoo and the Yangtse River to Western powers. Chefoo, located on China's north-eastern coast, was designated an international trading port in August 1861, with no less than seventeen nations establishing consulates there. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
