As the famed director described, "This film is a complete catalog of my entire mythological world, a dangerous representation of my identity that was undertaken with no precedent whatsoever." The story is so personal that he based the protagonist entirely on his wife and lead actress, Giulietta Masina. Lot 402

DRAGSTRIP GIRLOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine+ Folded American International, 1957The one sheet offered here is a great representation of the genre, mixing smoldering passion with forbidden excitement in a single image. The lurid, searing red and yellow colors serve to highlight these emotions, drawing potential viewers in inexorably. This folded poster has only light fold wear, including the three center point cross folds, a few minor scattered crimps, and a slight bleed-through from a stamp on the verso, but otherwise is an exceptionally clean copy.Following the end of World War II, Hollywood began to realize that there was a new class of moviegoers that they had yet to exploit: teenagers. Now, with increased mobility, disposable cash, and an almost insatiable desire for entertainment, the teen market has become one that Hollywood has begun to actively court. It was almost inevitable that the new teen genre would intersect with the established crime genre to create a new category of motion picture: the Juvenile Delinquent film. Remarkably, given the period, not all the JDs were male. Pictures like The Violent Years (1956) and Reform School Girl (1957) proved that girls could be just as delinquent as boys. Into this mix came Dragstrip Girl (1957), deftly mixing the JD genre with the famous - and illegal - sport of drag racing in a film about a young woman who loves speed, the thrills it brings, and the tragic consequences that result. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Lot 404

DUMBOPost-War Belgian (14" x 21.75")Fine+ on Linen RKO, 1947The post-war Belgian poster is really the piece to have on this title, featuring Dumbo, Timothy Q. Mouse, Carl, Jr. (the locomotive that pulls the circus train), and the two crows, is far superior to the one sheet. From 1947, this is from the original release of the movie in that country, as Belgium was occupied by Germany during the war, and films imported from America were banned. Prior to restoration, this poster had previous issues, including tiny tears, chipping, and fold wear. There have been sporadic touchups to all, including the top left corner, and there is a tax stamp in the lower left corner. The poster does contain handwritten notes and prices in the upper imprint area, which is not unusual.Dumbo (1941) is now considered one of Disney's classic and most beloved animated features. Based on a children's story by Helen Aberson-Mayer and Harold Pearl, tells the story of an elephant with oversized ears that enable him to fly. The movie was made to recover from the losses suffered after the box office failures of both Pinocchio (1940) and Fantasia (1940). These failures were caused mainly by the severe contraction of the European market during World War II, which led to a decrease in ticket sales. Unlike its predecessors, Dumbo has a shorter running time of only 64 minutes. It was deliberately made with simplicity in mind, and the directive was to keep the production cost as low as possible. This was achieved by purposely avoiding the use of special effects work that had been used in previous features. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Lot 505

LA TRAITES DES BLANCHES BY JEAN-LOUIE DEBUT DE LA FORESTFrench Newspaper Grande (47" x 73")Fine- on European Linen; Artist Theophile Alexandre Steinlen Le Journal, 1899This poster on European linen with an overall appearance that is largely undiminished has had some touch-ups to previous fold wear and separations, pinholes, chipping, as well as tears to the interior. There is some paper loss in the lower vertical folds and in between the words "Le" and "Journal" in the upper left. There is also an ink stamp in the lower left, some general color softening and the linen has been trimmed into the border by approximately 1" vertically and horizontally, extending slightly into the upper printing. This intriguing poster from 1899, with Art Nouveau-inspired design by Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923), promotes Le Journal, a Paris daily newspaper published from 1892-1944. This issue is particularly infamous as it covers a chapter of author Dubut de Laforest's novel La Traite des Blanches (The White Slave Trade), a fictionalized account of an actual incident that occurred in 1880 when it was revealed that some 50 foreign - and underage - girls were taken captive and forced to work as prostitutes in the brothels of Brussels. The case drew international attention, especially when it came to light that some of those involved in the affair were members of the local police force. Steinlen's image, which brings to mind the iconic poster art of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, captures a scene from the novel inside one of the brothels as the house manager looks on derisively as three desperate girls are forced to endure their captivity and abuse. Among those who appreciate posters from this period, Steinlen's work is considered especially collectible, so make sure you don't overlook this rare beauty, as it deserves a special place in your collection. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. This work, exhibited in 2005 at the Conseil Régional de Basse-Normandie, was created as a tribute to Stanley Kubrick's cult film 2001 A Space Odyssey, which was a great inspiration for Futura 2000. Ephemeral and inflammatory since inception, graffiti is an art form for which context is paramount and which inherently combines the urge to deface while expressing freely a political outcry, a signature, an aesthetic gesture. Putting their stamp on their creations, these 'aerosol artists'—to use Monzon's expression—whose first graffiti appeared in Philadelphia in the 1960s, were revealed in New York in the districts of Washington Heights, the Bronx and Brooklyn in the 1970s. The ground-breaking art thrived in the underground, a perfect playing field for the spray can virtuosos. Painted with the speed of execution that is the hallmark of libertarian art, subway wagons rushed by the bleary-eyed early-morning commuters in a flash of bright colours. These clandestine artists initially meant to assert their identity, as well as their belonging to a collective clan culture; however aesthetic ambitions would gradually emerge. In 1973, New York Magazine launched a contest to find the best graffiti: thus Street Art entered the art scene. It was on his way to school—School of Visual Arts—, in the subway, that young Leonard McGurr discovered the new art form; at the age of fifteen he too began tagging the tunnels of New York. His tag (signature) was chosen then: Futura 2000, inspired by a Lincoln car of the same name and the Futura font created by Paul Renner in 1927. He then added the year 2000, because, since he lived in the 1970s, he never thought he would see the dawn of a new millennium. The young prodigy became a protégé of Keith Haring, who helped him gain access to New York art galleries, and was discovered in 1981 at the notorious P.S.1 during the now legendary New York/New Wave exhibition, alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, Rammellzee and others. The following year he had a solo exhibition at the Fun Gallery, as had Jean-Michel Basquiat a few months earlier. A true icon of the hip-hop movement, Futura 2000 has played a part in the prestige of Street Art, and is featured in all the museum exhibitions devoted to graffiti: Tate Gallery in London; Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Hong Kong and Tokyo. One of the works we offer, History of Spray Painting, shows the strong bond between the artist and Keith Haring (the dedication is very enlightening). It was at the dawn of the 1980s that the artist met the Clash; the group was visiting New York at the time. The tagger made the banner for one of their concerts and accompanied them on their world tour. Thanks to this experience —which he would say was one of the best of his life—, Futura 2000 discovered France and met Yvon Lambert. Europe opened its doors to him. The Fondation Cartier, the Palais de Tokyo and all the major institutions called on him. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Raoul Dufy made a significant contribution to the world of fashion and textiles through his collaborations with renowned couture houses.Starting from 1905, Dufy sought to translate his aesthetic from painting to various mediums. He expanded his range of techniques with virtuoso mastery, including engraving, illustration, ceramics, theatre set design, murals, tapestries, and textiles, emphasising a particular attraction to decorative arts. In this regard, textile creation played a significant role in his artistic production, marked by prestigious collaborations with the famous fashion designer Paul Poiret and the silk house Bianchini-Férier.It was from 1910 that Paul Poiret and Raoul Dufy partnered and together founded 'La petite Usine', a modest artisan workshop on Boulevard de Clichy where the artist carried out all stages of creation: drawing, wood engraving, and fabric printing. This collaboration served as a stepping stone for Dufy, who continued his textile creations on an industrial scale with the Bianchini-Férier manufacture. In his own words: 'So here I am led to decoration and fashion, not for relaxation or amusement, but for a serious experience. What echoes this period of my life awakens in me! Thanks to Poiret and Bianchini-Férier, I was able to realise this connection between art and decoration, especially to show that decoration and painting draw from the same source.'His bold, colourful floral motifs transposed onto printed fabrics contributed to the creation of luxurious and elegant textiles. Dufy's recognisable style, characterised by vibrant colours, fluid lines, and nature-inspired motifs, was particularly well-suited to the world of fashion. His works were integrated into the design of dresses, scarves, and accessories, marking an artistic influence in this field. His joyful, vibrant aesthetic and ability to capture movement added an artistic dimension to clothing and textiles, making him a sought-after artist in the context of haute couture. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Wheatstone." Augusta Ada Lovelace, Countess of Lovelace (1815-52), was a renowned English mathematician and innovator in computer science. She was also the only legitimate child of Lord and Lady Byron. Sir Charles Wheatstone (1802-75) was an important scientist and inventor. See his extensive entry in DNB (which chooses to omit Ada Lovelace). FIRST EDITION of this controversial work whose author was renowned as a philosopher, chiefly on religious matters, and a free-thinking secularist. It would have found a sympathetic readership in Ada Lovelace, with whose family this copy is clearly connected, and Charles Wheatstone, but it was by no means met with universal approval, as evidenced by this scathing contemporary review by John Relly Beard, a Unitarian minister and theologian, which appeared in The British Quarterly Review in 1850: "The author ... surpassing the magicians of Egypt in dexterity, has not only imitated Divine deeds, but gone far to supersede the necessity of a creative power. Only give him his law of development, and he will transform you a crab into a monkey, and then make the monkey into a man ..." It is interesting to note that this review appeared almost a decade before the first publication of Charles Darwin's magnum opus. In January 1851, the work was also the subject of the first contribution to The Westminster Review - a radical publication Mackay actively supported - by George Eliot, a writer who finds herself rather more in sympathy with some of the book's more controversial themes, and in which, she claimed: "... we find passages of pre-eminent beauty - gems into which are absorbed the finest rays of intelligence and feeling. We believe Mr. Mackay's work is unique in its kind ..." (2)
