* Edward Seago [1910-1974]- Halftide at Waxham:- Edward Seago studio stamp on reverse of back board watercolour 37.5 x 55cm * Provenance. With Thompson`s Gallery, London *Biography. Edward Brian [Ted] Seago was an English artist who painted both in oils and watercolour. Largely self taught, he did receive some instruction from Sir Alfred Munnings and Bertram Priestman. At 14, he won a Royal Drawing Society award and at 18 years old he joined a travelling show and toured with circuses in Britain and Europe. He continued to paint all this while, becoming well known and popular around the World. Invalided out of the army in 1944, but invited by General Alexander to record the Italian Campaign, in 1945 Colnaghi`s exhibited his war paintings and showed his work annually from that time on. This exhibition and subsequent shows received unprecedented success with large queues before the doors opened. The Queen Mother was a great admirer and collector of Seago`s work. The Duke of Edinburgh invited Seago on a World Tour in `Britannia` in 1956, the paintings of Antartica which were considered to be amongst his best, now hang in Balmoral. He became a member of the RWS in 1959. Seago was a lover of East Anglia, the Norfolk broads and sailing, and was a masterly painter and watercolourist of Broadland. He has had major exhibitions with the Fine Art Society, Richard Green, Portland Gallery and Thomas Gibson. He lived at Ludham in Norfolk, where he died of a brain tumor at the age of 64. In his Will, he requested that one third of his paintings from his studio be destroyed!

(Hackett, p. 150) `The prisoners were taken to the Staats Model School at Pretoria, and Churchill, Brockie, and Haldane made many plans to escape, which were doomed to failure, but eventually Churchill got away on December 12th; the others were observed by a sentry, and dared not make the attempt, but later on they managed to hide themselves under the floorings of the prison, and being joined by Le Mesurier, they disappeared on February 26, 1900, to the consternation and mystification of their guards, who never supposed they were hiding in the building. They were supplied with necessities from time to time by their fellow officers who were in the secret, but found no means to escape till March 16th, when all the prisoners were removed and the building deserted, when finding the coast clear, they succeeded in getting outside, eluded the few passers by, and were soon on the veld. The officers were hidden by some friends amongst bales of wool, which were put on a truck attached to a passenger train bound for Delagoa Bay, which took them safely across the border.` - Mendelssohn I, pp. 669,670. Although unfinished, the Summa is `one of the classics of the history of philosophy and one of the most influential works of Western literature.` It is intended as an instructional guide for moderate theologians, and a compendium of all of the main theological teachings of the Catholic Church. It presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West. The Summa`s topics follow a cycle: the existence of God; Creation, Man; Man`s purpose; Christ; the Sacraments; and back to God. Sowerby, James (With Assistance) British Mineralogy: Or Coloured Figures Intended to Elucidate the Mineralogy of Great Britain Complete set of this celebrated work; five medium 8vo volumes (240 x 155 mm) in all, uniformly in a somewhat later half morocco binding, with cloth sides; raised bands to spines, tooled in six compartments, with red and brown morocco lettering-pieces to second and third compartments in each case, the others ornately gilt with central fleurons, apart from the lowest compartment which has `Port Elizabeth Public Library` in gilt; library name blocked in central oval to upper board of each volume; all edges gilt; marbled endpapers; Sotheran`s minute hand-stamp to front free endpapers verso; pp. xii + 223 + (i), (ii) + [1*-19*] + (i) + 199 + (i), (ii) + 209 + (i), (iv) + 184, vi + 281 + (i) + (xxiv). Five hundred and fifty hand-coloured plates, one hundred to each of the first four volumes, and one hundred and fifty to the final one. Extremities somewhat rubbed; some dye lifted from fourth compartments with removal of library code labels; lower hinge of heavier fifth volume starting; remnant of bookplate to front free endpapers; library codes and stamps, including de-accession stamps, to prelims., some small stamps elsewhere, though never to the front of plates; moderate foxing and browning, affecting the plates themselves very little. Each book has its own index, and the final volume includes the systematic index and general index, followed by notes and corrections. A thorough collation reveals the following points requiring clarification: 1. In Volume 3, there is no leaf for pp. 31,32, though also no missing text, as the consecutive plates and accompanying descriptions are present. 2. Similarly, there appear to be printing errors in Volume 4, where there are no leaves for pp.7,8, or pp. 79,80, and again the consecutive plates and their descriptions are not missing. 3. In Volume 5, `241` appears at the head of the page that should be 237 (`238` to verso), but the text is appropriate for the facing consecutive plate; `239` then appears at the head of the page that should be 243, the pagination continuing `240, 241, 243, ...,` etc. Once again, the required plates and descriptions are all present. The standard of the colouring is consistently excellent throughout the five hundred and fifty plates. This is a remarkable set, the volumes overall in good to very good condition, and the plates outstanding. James Sowerby (1757-1822), although best known for his pioneering botanical publications, deserves no less recognition for the production of lavishly illustrated works on other branches of natural history, most notably mineralogy. The illustrations in the ground-breaking `British Mineralogy` were produced from studying mineral specimens in Sowerby`s own collection, along with others loaned by geologists. The hand-colouring was done by the Sowerbys themselves, with some helpers. Publisher Place: London Publisher: R. Taylor and Co.
