Delivered by Puttocks Mercedes-Benz of Guildford on the 18/04/2000 The SL500's silky-smooth V8 engine is legendary for its subtle performance The main dealer service history corroborates the mileage of some 27,915 miles (atoc) Treated to a comprehensive schedule of detailing works some 100 miles ago Presented to auction with an extensive history file and as one of the finest examples on the market From a long lineage of beautiful Mercedes-Benz SLs, the R129-series was introduced in 1989 and continued the company's tradition of fast and reliable grand touring convertibles. Developed from the earlier R107 500SL, the brand new design was powered by a 5.0-litre V8 engine producing some 302 bhp. The new model also featured an expanding roll-over bar, a fully electric hood, electric seats, mirrors, anti-lock brakes and a multi-link rear axle. A facelift of the R129 was carried out in 1995 which included revisions to the headlights, rear lights and automatic climate control. This particular right-hand drive Mercedes-Benz SL500 is finished in Tourmaline Green Metallic with a Mushroom leather interior and Burr Walnut trim. The first stamp in the service book would suggest that the car was ordered, rather glamorously, through the Mercedes-Benz dealer on the Champs-Elysee, Paris, but delivered through Mercedes Benz Puttocks in Guildford, where it received its first service on 11th April 2000 having covered only 20 miles. This car was ordered with an incredible list of options including a glass roof, Adaptive Damping System (ADS) with Skyhook, Xenon headlights with cleaning equipment, a fire-extinguisher, multi-contour, heated electric seats with memory and pulse functions and an automatically dipping rearview mirror to name but a few. Maintenance duties on this wonderful car have always been carried out at Mercedes-Benz main dealers as seen in the Service Book which now displays a total of 8 stamps and can be found in the car's comprehensive history file along with the related invoices. The black electric roof is in superb condition as is the body-coloured hardtop. Supplied with a fresh MOT until May 2021, four new tyres, a V5C and its complete book pack containing all relevant literature, this very sharp SL500 is now showing some 27,7915 miles, at the time of cataloguing, from new and has had four owners prior to our vendor. This is, without doubt, one of the finest SL500s we have ever offered and we urge you to view the car in person - it does not disappoint. Whilst visiting Devon in the 1960's he became acquainted with Charles Frazer Smith who had worked for MI6 & MI9 in the war, and designed spy items for the SOE and others. D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930), English author. Autograph postcard, in pencil, addressed to Miss Louie Burrows, 72 Moorlands Rd, North Bay, Scarborough. 'Thank you for letter - I'll try to see you one day - possibly Monday week. We having a veritable red & yellow time here - gaudy's not the word. Saw Nina - Mary's lovely. DHL'. Postage stamp not present, partial Blackpool postmark. Professor John Worthen and Dr Andrew Harrison of the D. H. Lawrence Research Centre have kindly provided the following information: This is an unpublished postcard. It pre-dates Lawrence's engagement to Louie Burrows, which happened in early December 1910. Lawrence was certainly writing from the boarding house of Catherine Swarbrick (known as Kate) at 77 Talbot Road, Blackpool, where he was staying with his friend George Neville (for more information on their stay, see pp.145-53 of Neville's book, A Memoir of D. H. Lawrence). The 'red & yellow time' in the card is partly explained by that memoir, in which he describes how two other guests had dressing gowns of rose and gold colour, and how Lawrence and Neville called them 'Rosie' and 'Old Gold' and successfully evaded them. The mistakes in the card ('We having' and the scrawled 'lovely') suggest the unsettled nature of life there. In the card, Lawrence says 'saw Nina' (which we know took place on Thursday 11 August 1910), so the card must have been written either on the day of their return from Barrow-in-Furness, on the evening of the 11th, or on Friday 12th, or on the day he and Neville left, Saturday 13th. The last seems unlikely, as the card seems to describe things that are going on, not things now over, so the date must be c.11-12 August 1910. The postmark was certainly 'Blackpool'. The Stewarts were at 44 Nelson Street, Barrow; they had apparently three children, the Nina whom Lawrence mentions, a daughter Mary (almost certainly the Mary also mentioned in the card) and a younger son.Provenance: By descent - Louie Burrows was the vendor's great-aunt
