BORMANN MARTIN: (1900-1945) German Chief of the Nazi Party Chancellery 1941-45 and Private Secretary of the Fuhrer of the German Reich 1943-45. An interesting T.L.S., Bormann, one page, 4to, Berlin, 2nd March 1940, to SS-Gruppenfuhrer Schaub, in German. Bormann informs his correspondent, in full, 'Miss Thea Henkel, previously a waitress at the Cafe Heck in Munich, was found a place, at her own request, with the district administrative authorities (the department for issue of permits). I have already informed the Fuhrer of this matter'. With a couple of pencil lines and the official received ink stamp of the Adjutant des Fuhrers (dated 6th March 1940), two file holes to the left edge, and a small, very neat split to the rigt edge of the central fold, not affecting the text or signature. VG   Julius Schaub (1898-1967) German Chief Aide and Adjutant to Adolf Hitler 1925-45. Schaub was present in the Fuhrerbunker towards the end of World War II although was ordered to leave in April 1945 and destroy all of Hitler's personal belongings and papers.   The fact that Bormann was writing to Schaub to let him know that Adolf Hitler had been made aware of the employment of a young lady from a cafe would, at first, seem somewhat trivial until it is appreciated that the Cafe Heck was in fact Hitler's favourite spot in Munich and the place where he would frequently meet friends and associates in the 1920s.

Lot 133

DICKENS CHARLES: (1812-1870) English Novelist. A fine autograph envelope signed, boldly addressed by Dickens to Alfred Tennyson Esquire at St. James's Square in Cheltenham.  BRAUN FRITZ: (1879-1964) German School Teacher, the father of Eva Braun, Adolf Hitler's partner and eventual wife. An extremely rare original vintage signed sepia 2.5 x 3.5 photograph by Fritz Braun, to the verso, the candid image depicting his daughter, Eva Braun, standing in a full length pose outdoors, wearing an overcoat and hat and posing alongside a motor car. Signed ('F Braun') by Braun in bold indelible pencil and further annotated in his hand, in German, in full, 'My daughter Eva in front of her home in Munich in the year 1939'. Above the annotation appears Fritz Braun's personal ink stamp with his name, profession ('Senior Vocational-School Teacher, retired') and his address in Ruhpolding, Upper Bavaria. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and with some light fading to the image, otherwise about VG   Provenance: The present photograph, removed from the Braun's private family album, was given by Fritz Braun to his friend Julius Weder as a memento in 1951. The image is most likely unpublished.   In 1939, the date of the present photograph, Eva Braun was residing in the fashionable Bogenhausen district of Munich and it is her home at Wasserburgerstrasse 12 (now Delpstrasse 12) that can be seen in the photograph. Braun lived there with her younger sister Gretl and the house was not far from Hitler's Prinzregentenplatz apartment. The Braun sisters used the property as their main residence when Hitler was at the front during World War II. The motor car in the photograph is most likely one made by the Maybach Motorenbau.

Lot 277

ERNST KARL: (1904-1934) German SA-Gruppenfuhrer, one of the suspects thought to be involved in the Reichstag fire in February 1933, just one month after Adolf Hitler was sworn in as Chancellor of Germany and regarded as a pivotal event in the establishment of Nazi Germany. Ernst is believed to have entered into a homosexual relationship with Ernst Rohm, who had participated in the Beer Hall Putsch, however Karl Ernst married in June 1934 (Adolf Hitler served as best man at his wedding). Just six weeks later Hitler ordered a purge of the SA, known as the Night of the Long Knives, and both Rohm and Ernst were executed, the latter shot by a firing squad. An extremely rare D.S., Ernst, one page, small oblong 12mo, Berlin, 5th October 1933, in German. The partially printed document, completed in another hand, appears to be a form of identity card issued to Ernst by the SA of the NSDAP and provides details of his rank within the Berlin - Brandenburg group of the Sturmabteilung (SA). Boldly signed by Ernst in black fountain pen ink. With a light official oval ink stamp. Autographs of Ernst are extremely rare in any form as a result of his execution at the age of 29. VG

LUGOSI BELA: (1882-1956) Hungarian Actor, famous for his screen and stage portrayal of Bram Stoker's Count Dracula. An interesting T.L.S., Bela Lugosi, one page, 4to, Christopher Street, New York, 4th May 1950, to Bertram W. H. Poole. Lugosi writes 'On December 6th 1949 you were so kind and gracious to inform me that “if you will pay me $800 within the next six or eight months I would be glad to call the matter square”'and continues to add that he appreciates his correspondent's 'sporty attitude' although remarks 'Unfortunately I'm still struggling to approach my reduced overhead and can hardly make it', explaining 'The 8th month expires at the end of July and I start my summer stock engagements around the end of June and from then on I would be in the position to send you $100.00 a week for the coming eight weeks. If you could afford to agree to that it would solve my problem' and also making an alternative suggestion, 'On the other hand I just spoke to a friend and country man of mine, a reputable stamp dealer and auctioner (sic) whom you know well, Mr. Ferryman…..who would be glad to put my collection on auction - using my name as bait'. Lugosi further writes 'In case you would favor the later proposition be so kind and get in touch with him stipulating your conditions and the legal way you would wish it should be handled and put in writing to assure your security'. Accompanied by the original envelope. Together with a carbon typed copy of Poole's reply to Lugosi, unsigned, one page, 4to, California, 9th May 1950, thanking the actor for his letter and stating, in part, 'I was beginning to wonder when I would hear from you again. If you can guarantee to send me $100 a week for the months of July and August that would be a satisfactory solution of the problem. As the end of the so-called stamp “season” is rapidly approaching it would hardly be possible to get quicker action by letting Ferryman sell the collection at auction. It takes considerable time to lot stamps for a sale, print the catalogues, distribute them some weeks in advance etc….' Also including a second, earlier T.L.S., Bela Lugosi, (a secretarial signature, most likely in the hand of Lugosi's fourth wife, Lillian Arch), one page, 4to, Hotel Woodrow, New York, 15th October 1949, also to Bertram W. H. Poole. Lugosi states that he has been travelling all over the country 'to make a meager (sic) living' and remarks 'The whole situation is very embarrassing to me and I never would have had the nerve to borrow the money if I thought it would turn out like this', explaining '…I am sure you know that the film industry was dead and I only made one picture in three years. Finally I had to go out and pick up odd jobs to cover overhead and take care of the most important matter my stamp collection', concluding 'I appreciate your generous offer to send you 200.00 at my earliest convenience, which I will do, and after that 100.00 or more a month. I cannot explain how deeply I appreciate your patience. Thank you, thank you'. Accompanied by the original envelope. An unusual group of letters relating to Lugosi's interest in philately and illustrating the well documented financial struggles the actor was experiencing at this stage of his career. VG, 3   Bertram William Henry Poole (1880-1957) English Philatelist who settled in America from around 1913. Poole wrote numerous handbooks on stamps and also founded and edited several magazines including Poole's Monthly Philatelist, Philatelic Opinion and The Philatelic Journal of Great Britain. He was one of the original signatories to Great Britain's Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1921.   The website Mental Floss reports that Lugosi was a 'hardcore' stamp collector and also states that his fourth wife, Lillian Arch, estimated that her husband had amassed more than 150,000 stamps. The actor once declared that 'stamp collecting is a hobby which may cost you as much as 10% of your investment. You can always sell your stamps with not more than a 10% loss. Sometimes, you can even make money'.

MUSSOLINI BENITO: (1883-1945) Italian Fascist Dictator of World War II. T.L.S., Mussolini, two pages, small folio, Rome, 23rd May 1925, to the President of the Council of Ministers (Prime Minister), President of the Supreme Defence Commission. on the printed stationery of the Minister of the Navy, in Italian. Mussolini’s letter is written in regard to the ‘Assignment of a Navy Corps of Engineers senior officer to the Joint Supreme Defence Commission on the basis of art.4 of the Presidential Decree 21st June 1923’ and states, in part, ‘The Office of the General Staff of the Royal Navy since May 1924 raised the very important question concerning requirements that merchant ships should meet to be inscribed in the State auxiliary fleet from the point of view of the buoyancy safety, armament, provisions for airplanes etc. in order to let the Merchant Navy to take part in resistance and national defence in the event of a war. The question later developed by the Supreme Defence Commission and conveyed for the necessary technical opinions to the Committee for ship projects has recently…..given rise to a settlement scheme that should now further be developed. Your Excellency with a letter from March this year stressed on the necessity to properly provide these important studies “for the reconstitution of the auxiliary fleet which the Supreme Defence Commission intends to gradually implement in order to assure to the Country maritime communications and supplies in case of conflict”. I would therefore judge necessary and urgent that a Navy Corps of Engineers senior officer, to be appointed for this task, which I would indicate in the Navy Corps Engineers Colonel Pugliese Umberto, particularly competent in the matter. This Superior Officer should be assigned to the Joint Supreme Defence Commission…..and…..during the period of preparation of studies, this Superior Officer would depend on the Office of the General Staff of the Royal Navy for the necessary connections with this Supreme Defence Commission and with the other institutions interested in carrying out the same studies’. With an official red ink stamp and several annotations to the head of the first page. A letter of good content in which Mussolini looks to strengthen the Italian Navy ahead of a potential war. A few extremely small tears and light age wear to the edges, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG   The present letter is a curious example of Italian bureaucracy as Mussolini was in fact writing to himself – the Italian Dictator was serving as both Minister of the Navy (January 1933 – July 1943) and President of the Council of Ministers (October 1922 – July 1943) at the time.

[GORING HERMANN]: (1893-1946) German Political and Military leader, a prominent member of the Nazi Party. Commander of the Luftwaffe during World War II. KEITEL BODEWIN (1888-1953) German General of World War II, Chief of the Army Personnel Office of the Reichswehr and the Wehrmacht 1938-42. Brother of Wilhelm Keitel. An important D.S., Keitel, one page, folio, n.p. (Berlin?), n.d. (c.1940), in German. The elegantly penned manuscript document is a contemporary copy of the original document promoting Hermann Goring to be a General of Infantry, as issued in Berlin on 30th August 1933 and originally signed by Paul von Hindenburg (President of the German Reich), Werner von Blomberg (Commander-in-Chief of the Reichswehr) and Kurt von Hammerstein-Equord (Chief of the German Army Command). Signed by Keitel at the foot in his capacity as Chief of the Army Personnel Office, certifying that the document is a correct copy, and bearing an official circular black ink stamp featuring the Nazi eagle and swastika alongside his signature. A document of historic content, illustrating Adolf Hitler consolidating his military power in 1933, as well as that of Goring who would become the second most powerful man in Germany. Some very light, extremely minor creasing and a few very light stains, not affecting the text or signature, VG Following Adolf Hitler's appointment as Chancellor of Germany in January 1933 Hermann Goring was appointed as minister without portfolio, as well as Minister of the Interior for Prussia and Reich Commissioner of Aviation. One of his first acts as a cabinet minister was to oversee the creation of the Gestapo, which was established in November 1933, just a few months after the original promotion document was presented to Goring.  The present document may have been prepared as a certified copy for retention in the archives of the Army Personnel Office, or may have been issued as a duplicate copy to Hermann Goring himself for his personal records.
