Charles I. Letter signed at the head (Charles R) to an unamed correspondent but clearly the Privy Council in Scotland ("Right trusty & wellbeloved Cosens & Counsellors"), announcing his determination to stamp out "the practise of exorbitant and unsufferable usury, which of late yeres is cum into ane ordinary trade of many merchants ther," "Given att our Court att Whythall this 23 of March 1632 styl. Angl" [i.e. 1633 new style]. 1 page, folio, with integral blank leaf, slightly dustmarked. Note: Countersigned by the Master of Requests, James Galloway, afterwards Lord Dunkeld, who had been appointed to receive the "legall forfeits" of Scottish usurers. The Master of Requests, on whom the forfeits were bestowed, was a judge in the Court of Requests, an offshoot of the Council dealing with judicial business in civil cases, exercising an authority similar to that of the Star Chamber in criminal matters. In May the Scottish Privy Council agreed to levy fines for usury (Register of the Privy Council of Scotland IV 2nd series, 189)
The Gentleman`s Magazine, or Monthly Intelligencer. London: 1731-1898. c.283 volumes, a continuous run, engraved maps and plates, some folding, some coloured, all but a few contemporary half calf, some bindings rubbed or hinges weak, some boards detached, a few spines defective or split, some volumes neatly rebacked, later volumes mostly in good order, a few volumes rebound in cloth, occasional light spotting; Selections, 3 volumes of 4; and a rare set of the seven volumes of Indexes of The Gentleman`s Magazine, similiar bindings; sold not subject to return . Note: A complete set of this important historical publication from its commencement in 1731 until 1898. The Gentleman`s Magazine was founded in London in 1731 by Edward Cave whose innovation was to create a monthly digest of news and commentary on any topic the educated public might be interested in. Indeed, Cave, who edited The Gentleman`s Magazine under the pen name "Sylvanus Urban", was the first to use the term "magazine" (meaning "storehouse") for a periodical. Prior its founding there had been specialized journals, but no such wide-ranging publication (though there had been attempts, such as The Gentleman`s Journal, which was edited by Peter Motteux and ran from 1692 to 1694). Samuel Johnson`s first regular employment as a writer was withThe Gentleman`s Magazine which remains an inexhaustible mine of information for scholars of eighteenth century life. From 1731 to 1782 one volume a year was published, and from 1783 two volumes a year. Provenance: c. 200 volumes: Hugh S. A 1796 pattern heavy cavalry trooper`s sword, straight, shallow fullered blade 35", with hatchet tip, marked Bate on backstrap with inspector`s stamp and broad arrow with BO at forte, regulation steel hilt with pierced disc guard, flat knucklebow, plain pommel and backstrap with ears, wooden grip (covering missing) in its steel scabbard by Osborne & Gunby, with 2 rings, the scabbard and guard marked en suite 2d Ds/F. No 9. Basically GC for age (worn and cleaned over pitting, scabbard dented). Plate 6
