(17) The original series of Crossroads, recorded at ATVs Centrals Broad Street Studios in Birmingham, first aired on Monday, November 2, 1964, and was first shown five days a week. Set in a fictional motel in Birmingham, the episodes were recorded as live with very little opportunities for re-takes. The series affectionately known for the wobbly sets and fluffed lines attracted huge audiences with ratings as high as 15 million viewers during the 1970s and early 80s. Prime Minister Harold Wilsons wife Mary, complained when the newly formed Thames television decided to stop airing the series in 1968. Crossroads was axed in 1988 and after a brief ill-fated revival in 2001, it aired the last ever episode on May 30, 2003.Joan Noele Gordon (1919-1985) was an English actress, television presenter, and producer, who starred in Crossroads from 1964 until she was sacked in 1981. She was credited as the first woman to be seen on colour television sets when she was asked to take part, as a teenager, in John Logie Bairds colour transmission tests in 1938. Noele Gordon later became the first woman to interview a British Prime Minister during ITVs first chat show, Tea With Noele Gordon, when she interviewed Harold Macmillan. Noele Gordon starred in Crossroads from 1964 until she was sacked in 1981, with a brief return in 2003. In January 2023, ITVX screened a new drama series, written by Russell T. Davies, titled Nolly, starring Helena Bonham Carter as Noele Gordon, which follows her time working on Crossroads. Provenance: The vendors father, Dr. Nicholson, was a GP in Ross-on-Wye where Noele Gordon and her mother, Jockie, lived at Weir End a large country house. He was their doctor for over 15 years from the early 1970s. The vendors personal memories are noted here - I was adopted as surrogate grandchild by Jockie and Nolly and was asked over to play at Weir End, where they both lived when Nolly wasnt in Birmingham filming. They used to let me play on their baby grand piano and Jockie used to make tea parties for me with dollies and teddies as company. There was a local lady who made beautiful handmade soft toys. Nolly and Jockie had several of these made for me, which I still own. I remember laughing a lot, listening to music, singing and having a lot of fun with both of those ladies. Nolly would bring fellow actors to visit, and she asked all the cast to sign these photos for me. The Larry Grayson photo comes from a time when we were her guests at the London Palladium and went backstage to meet him, although I dont remember the specific show or occasion. The other autographs in my collection, were sourced for me by Nolly (except for Jake Thackray, who was treated by my father at some point), from artists based at ATV/Central television (e.g. TISWAS signatures). Tony Adams was Nolly's good friend and always drove her down to Ross from Birmingham in the Rolls Royce. He was so kind to her, and I remember him as a really nice, genuine guy. We saw Noele in Gypsy, and I remember how upset she was when Crossroads was axed. My friendship with her went from about 1970 until 1981 when I left home for college. My father last visited her in her final months, in Birmingham. Condition Report: overall good conditions, with strong signatures.
