Property of a deceased's estate1948 Vincent-HRD 998cc RapideRegistration no. EBX 969Frame no. R3155Engine no. F10AB/1/1165 (see text)REAR FRAME NO. RC3155 (see text)CRANKCASE MATING NOS. L88/L88 Odometer reading: 693 miles, believed since restoration - not warranted MoT expiry date: Unknown•Present ownership since 1980•Extensively modified•Requires re-commissioningEver since the Series-A Rapide's arrival in 1937, the Vincent v-twin has been synonymous with design innovation and engineering excellence. But above all else it was the v-twin's stupendous performance that captivated motorcyclists. With a top speed approaching 120mph, and bettering it in the Black Shadow's case, the Vincent v-twin was the fastest road vehicle of its day.Vincent Owners Club records confirm this machine's upper frame number and engine number pertain to a 1948 Series-B Rapide while the crankcase mating numbers are correct for engine number 'F10AB/1 /1165'. There is evidence of an underlying stamp to engine prefix 'F10AB'; however, this is believed to be a factory error as the typeface appears correct. Rear frame number 'RC3155' is a non-factory re-stamp (note the additional 'C' and different typeface from that of the upper frame number, particularly the '3'). 'EBX 690' was first registered in Carmarthenshire and comes with an old-style continuation logbook issued in 1960, which erroneously records the frame number with an additional '5'. Two owners are listed, the second of whom, Mr Kenneth Johnson of St Helens, sold the Vincent to the late owner in February 1980 (sales receipt on file). 'EBX 690' incorporates numerous modifications including Lightning-type brakes, coil ignition, Amal Monobloc carburettors, alloy wheel rims, rev counter and clock, Black Shadow type speedometer, and only one rear brake. The engine turns over but it is not known when the machine was last run. Sold strictly as viewed, it will require re-commissioning or possibly more extensive restoration before further use. The machine is offered with a substantial file of history to include period photographs, bills, correspondence, old V5 document, MoTs, maintenance manuals, and an original Vincent Rider's Handbook.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 45/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH.
