SIJAS PROSPER: (1759-1794) French Officer, adjutant to Bouchotte. Sijas was guillotined, together with Robespierre, at the early age of 35. D.S., Prosper Sijas, one page, 4to, n.p., 6th December 1793, to Lieutenant Caylan, in French. The Partially printed document, bearing the heading of the War Ministry and the printed motto `Liberté, Egalité ou la Mort´, (`Freedom, Equality or Death´), is a certificate granting Caylan´s appointment as Lieutenant. With blank integral leaf. With an ink `bonnet´stamp to the front page. VG £80-100
ROBESPIERRE AUGUSTIN: (1763-1794) Also known as Robespierre the Young. Younger brother of Maximilien and Deputy of the convention. He was guillotined, at the early age of 31, as accomplice of Maximilien Robespierre. D.S., Robespierre, one page, folio, Nice, 29th May 1794, on the Convention Deputies of the Alpes Maritimes, army of Italy army printed stationery, in French. The partially printed document is an order to pay 300.000 Pounds to the commissar in charge of the uniforms supply. Countersigned by Dutramblay. The present letter was signed only two months before being executed. Bearing a black ink stamp beneath Robespierre´s signature `Representative of the People at the Army of Italy´. Also bearing a red ink stamp of the National Treasury and a red wax seal of the French republic representatives in good condition to the front. VG £400-600Such an important amount of money was most probably related to the expedition to Corsica. On 25th May 1794 several battalions from the army of Italy arrived to Toulon and were going to embark to Corsica. But the expedition never departed as the English-Corsican Kingdom was created on 19th June 1794.
[THE GIRONDINISTS ESCAPE]: Charles Jean Barbaroux (1767-1794) member of the convention. Guillotined at the early age of 27. D.S., Barbaroux, two pages, folio, 15th November 1792, in French. Barbaroux orders the opening of the depots and stores which were previously sealed, allowing the inspection of the Convention Commissars. Countersigned by Deputy Jean DeBry. With a Convention paper seal affixed to the front. Very slightly professionally repaired to the verso. With an ink collection stamp to the bottom right corner; François Nicolas Buzot (17 60-1794) Member of the Convention. He committed suicide. A.L.S., f.n.l. Buzot, one page, oblong 8vo, 28th February. Buzot lends an English book to his correspondent stating `I am flattered feeling that I help a citizen whose works have pleased and teached me..´ With blank address leaf; Jérôme Pétion de Villeneuve (1756-1794) Vice-Mayor of Paris and Convention Deputy. He committed suicide; Together with a D.S., one page, folio, Paris, 31st August 1792, to Charles Fortair. The document being an order to General Dumouriez aide-de-camp. With a Paris town hall paper seal affixed to the front. Countersigned by war Minister Servan de Gerbey. Also including a written text corresponding to a law approved, two pages, large folio, 8th March 1795, with the equality justice monogramme at the heading. The document refers to the Representative´s of the People list, the list of the ones accused, and those who will become part of the National Convention. Further referring to Delahaye (1761-1819), stating `..Deputy Lahaye is not included in the previous list. The Public Safety Committee and the one of National Security are instructed to make a prompt report about him.´ With a red wax seal of the Republic to the front. G, 4 £500-800Barbaroux, Buzot and Petion having learned about the order to arrest them, as traitors, escape and hide themselves at Saint-Émilion during ten months. A shepherd identified them and feeling they were about to be caught up they decided to shoot themselves. Petion and Buzot committed suicide. Barbaroux shoot himself but did not die. He would be guillotined shortly after.
BOURBOTTE PIERRE: (1763-1795) National Convention Deputy. Guillotined together with the Prairial insurgents. D.S., Bourbotte, one page, folio, dated 24th January 1795, in French. The partially printed attractive document being a decree issued by the war committee for the requisition of a cart and two horses and bears a large printed heading of the war committee with the revolution motto. With an ink stamp at the base alongside seven additional countersignatures by Convention Deputies Etienne Honoré Le Tourneur (1751-1817), Etienne Gossuin (1758-1827), Edmond Jean Baptiste Milhaud (1766-1833), Antoine Lémane (1749-1818), François Aubry (1747-1798), Pierre Joseph François Bodin (1748-1809) and Alexandre Paul de Chateauneuf-Randon (1757-1827). SIEYES EMMANUEL: (1748-1836), MERLIN DE DOUAI PHILIPPE (1754-1838) and REUBELL JEAN FRANÇOIS (1747-1807), National Convention Deputies. D.S., by the three Convention members, one page, large 11 x 20 folio, 9th March, 1795, in French. The partially printed document, being a passport, bears a very large and attractive French Republic heading showing Marianne, France's national symbol of liberty, treading the Royal sceptre. The passport allows travelling out of France, and is made in favour of Jean Baptiste Bouillerot travelling to Switzerland. With an ink Republic stamp to the front. VG £300-400
FAURE LOUIS-JOSEPH: (1760-1837) French Deputy Prosecutor of the Revolutionary Tribunal. He was replaced by Fouquier-Tinville. Faure was one of the four authors of the Napoleon code. L.S., Faure, two pages, 4to, Paris, 21st July 1795, on the printed stationery of the Public Prosecutor, Criminal Tribunal. Faure referring to the arrested citizen Barthelemy Gando, states `convinced that he has been participating in this crime, helping to introduce in French territory and issuing national documents, and being in possession of assignats, he has been condemned yesterday and sentenced to death, with all his belongings confiscated in the benefit of the Republic.´ The document bears the bonnet printed heading and an ink stamp. COLLOT D´HERBOIS & BILLAUD-VARENNE : Jean Marie Collot d´Herbois (1749-1796) French Actor, Dramatist and Revolutionary. President of the National Convention in June 1793. Although he saved Madame Tussaud from the guillotine, d'Herbois administered the execution of more than 2,000 people in the city of Lyon during the Reign of Terror; Jacques Nicolas Billaud-Varenne (1756-1819) French Revolutionary, often considered a key architect of the period known as The Reign of Terror. Both Collot D´Herbois and Billaud-Varenne were members of the Committee of Public Safety and were sentenced to deportation to French Guiana after their involvement in the 12th Germinal insurrection (1st April 1795). An excellent selection of documents comprising an extremely rare A.L.S., `Collot´ by Colot D´herbois´ wife, Anne Catherine Catrais (1759-1810) and countersigned `Billaud´ by Billaud-Varenne´s wife, Anne Angélique Doye, one page, 4to, to Paul Barras. The letter is written six months after their husbands were condemned and sent to French Guiana and is a plea to Barras, very recently appointed main executive leader of the Directory regime, and states in part `..because your report has to be issued this evening...we beg you to support our request to the Directory regarding their deliberation... in our favour. We wait and expect all from you..´. Their request never got a response; Together with a printed report entitled `..for the examination of Collot D´Herbois and Billaud-Varenne´s behaviour, people´s representatives..´ by Saladin, member of the Convention, 50 pages, 8vo, 3rd March 1795. The denounce mentions their complicity with Robespierre and St-Just; Also including an excellent D.S., by Jacques Nicolas Billaud-Varenne, Jean Marie Collot d'Herbois, Lazare Carnot (1753-1823) and Robert Lindet (1746-1825), one page, folio, Public Safety heading and is individually signed by these four Convention leaders. Accompanied by two printed decrees, the first from 12th Germinal, including 22 articles, eight pages, 4to, bearing a red ink stamp, and the second from 29th Germinal, three pages, 4to, listing the commissions members; Also including an extremely rare A.L.S., by Billaud-Varenne (`Billaud-Varenne´), two pages, 4to, from L´Hermitage, French Guiana, 4th October 1814, to Riviere-Oncle. Billaud-Varenne, pardoned by Napoleon, remains in French Guiana as farmer, and states `The nigger who brought your objects has told me that the buffet you have ordered to make for me is now finished. As I have no craft, I will write to...´ further saying `..I am involved in the exploitation of my mangroves, and this is a task that I can´t leave not even an instant..´ With blank integral leaf. VIGNES FRANÇOIS FELIX: (1769-1799) French General. Killed at the Legnago battle at the very early age of 29. Very rare D.S., Vignes, one page, oblong folio, 17th March 1796, in French. The partially printed document bearing the Rhin & Moselle army printed heading, Vignes in his capacity as Chief of Brigade issues a certificate in favour of Captain Poulat, reporting on his loyal and good services given. Countersigned by the Commissair of war and several members of the Committee. Bearing an ink stamp of the infantry brigade. Small stains to the edges. Folded. G £150-200

A fine 19th century French Japanese-style (Japonaise) lacquered brass repeating carriage clock by A. Dumas. With faux bamboo column supports and three komei type bronze overlay panels, the sides depict figures at various pursuits and the dial mask is ornamented with a swan. With silvered dial under a copper slip and having black enamel Roman numeral markers. Housing an 8 day movement with platform escapement striking half hourly on a gong and with repeating mechanism. Makers stamp A. D. underneath the case, 19.5cm high including the handle extended, 10.75cm wide, 10cm deep. Condition Report. To be used as a guide only. Running. Sold with the original key its number matching that on the backplate. Slight lacquer wear only.

World War One (WW1) - a 1917 Dated U.S. Remington Pattern 1913 Bayonet with Scabbard U.S. Bayonets were made by Remington for the British .303" P.14 rifle. It has grooved slab wood grips. It is stamped on the ricasso '1913' and with the Remington roundel together with '5 17' date (May 1917). The reverse has a British Inspection stamp. A Victorian brass cylindrical corkscrew by Robert Jones & Son No 2, the plain cylinder with raised banded decoration and inscribed "Robert Jones S & Son Makers 105 Cheapside Birmingham", with Victorian kite mark verso, the rosewood handle with brush missing, 15 cm long CONDITION REPORTS Looks to have been in poor state and somewhat restored. Handle haas been badly damaged. Chips, losses, scratches and splits and subsequently re-varnished perhaps. There is no bruch. The metal ware is generally rusty under the Robert Jones & Son stamp. An area has been scratched off vigorously. Various further scratches and marks, pitted marks to the body. An area of rust to the top of the brass barrel. Interior shows rusting. The two spikes that come down either side of the screw appear to have been bent and the screw itself appears not to have the whole length and has been broken and lost. The iron shaft with corrosion and rust and pitted marks. All over considerable signs of wear and tear - see images for further details. Considerable signs of wear and tear throughout, not in good condition. Also extreme wear to the screw attached to the handle, missing section, rust pitted etc
