A good original unsigned 7.5 x 5 photograph, the image showing the Tsar on a horse, holding a sacred icon before his kneeling soldiers during World War One. Bearing to the verso a press stamp marked “obituary”. This photograph would have been used by the press when publishing the Royal Family´s obituaries after their murders in 1918. 229      ROSSINI GIOACHINO: (1792-1868) Italian Composer. A rare and excellent D.S., `Gioachino Rossini´, two pages, 4to, thin paper, Paris, 15th March 1866, in Italian. The partially printed document being the official application form presented to register the copyright of one of his operas Le Siege de Corinthe in Milan, Italy. The document states in part `Gioachino Rossini intending to formally reserve the rights due to the author, according to the law from 25th June 1865, presents the opera with grand score for orchestra..´ Rossini signs beneath the opera title `L´assedio dil Corinto´, and the date of the premiere "1826". Signed at the base by the prefect secretary. Bearing an official taxation stamp to the upper left front corner and two ink stamps of the Italian ministry to the front and verso. Also bearing to the verso a contemporary registry annotation related to Rossini and his opera, dated in Florence, on 1st of May 1866. Very small hole not affecting the text or signature, and very small tear to the bottom edge, otherwise G   Le Siege de Corinthe (1826) is a three acts opera by Rossini premiered in Paris in 1826, andwas Rossini´s first French opera.

A large 4to printed souvenir reproduction of the famous Einstein-Szilard letter of August 1939 to American President Franklin D. Roosevelt, warning him that Germany may develop atomic bombs and suggesting that the United States should commence its own nuclear programme, signed by Townes in blue ink with his name alone to a clear area at the head of the first page. Also bearing a United States postage stamp featuring a portrait of Einstein and postmarked at Princeton, New Jersey, 14th March 1966. VG During World War II Townes worked on radar bombing systems at Bell Labs.

RUSHDIE SALMAN: (1947-  ) British Indian Novelist & Essayist. An interesting A.L.S., Salman Rushdie, three pages, 8vo, Fernshaw Road, London (the premises of his literacy agency, Wylie, Aitken & Stone), 2nd November 1992, to Ernst Reinhard Piper. Rushdie thanks his correspondent for their help 'in Artikel 19 Verlag' and at the Frankfurt Bookfair and 'also for your expressions of solidarity and hope for the future', continuing 'As it turned out, it was probably a mistake to have moved to Kiepenheuer [& Witsch, the German publishing house] with The Satanic Verses; but that is what I was advised at the time, and there is no point in trying to rewrite the past'. Rushdie also apologises to Piper for his decision, realising that he was hurt by it, and remarks 'But, as of course you know, writers (and publishers) make such choices - good ones, bad ones - all the time'. The novelist concludes his letter writing 'At any rate, I am truly grateful for your selfless support, and hope we may meet again soon. In the meanwhile, the storm continues - now, as you may have seen, in Germany also. It is a long, tough fight, but it must be won'. With the publisher's ink received stamp dated 9th November 1992 to a clear area at the head of the first page. A letter of significant content. VG    Ernst Reinhard Piper (1952-     ) German Historian who joined his father's publishing house in 1982. The German edition of The Satanic Verses was published by Artikel 19 Verlag in 1989; the publishers created specifically to protect them from the fatwa issued against Rushdie, Article 19 relating to the freedom of expression included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The 1981 Booker Prize winning Rushdie's work combines magical realism with historical fiction and much of his work is set on the Indian subcontinent. His fourth novel, The Satanic Verses, was the subject of a major controversy which resulted in the British government placing the author under police protection. In 2008 The Times ranked Rushdie thirteenth on its list of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945.

Signed and inscribed in bold black fountain pen ink to a clear area at the base of the image, also dated 11th April 1947 in his hand. WEISSKOPF VICTOR: (1908-2002) Austrian-born American Theoretical Physicist, Group Leader of the Theoretical Division of the Manhattan Project during World War II. A.L.S., Viki, two pages, 4to, Cambridge, Massachusetts, n.d. (1950s), to Joaquin Luttinger, on the printed stationery of the Department of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Weisskopf states that he has received his colleagues letter to the editor as a referee and comments 'I think you should add a few remarks in order to make it more useful', continuing to ask four questions regarding scientific formulas and why some are not defined in the paper, advising 'You ought to give some numerical results, even if they are bad…..It does not matter if the letter has a few words more'. Weisskopf concludes 'If you want to add 1, 3, 4, please send me, right away, by air mail the corrected copy. If you want to leave it as it is…..send me a telegram'. Accompanied by the original envelope (postage stamp and cancellations removed) hand addressed by Weisskopf. VG Joaquin Luttinger (1923-1997) American Physicist, recognised for his contributions to the theory of interacting electrons in one-dimensional metals. Luttinger studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the late 1940s.

[STALIN MILITARY AWARD]: An attractive and colourful Russian military award, one page, 4to, n.p., 2nd May 1945, to "Tovarish Guard Major Kononenko Anatoly Lukich", in Cyrillic. The partially printed award bears to the heading a head and shoulders image of Stalin in military uniform,  and features at the base a printed drawing showing Russians soldiers with the printed text beneath “In Combat we are deciding the Fate of Generations. We will Lead our Homeland to Glory”. The document states `By order of the Supreme Commander-in-chief, Marshal of the Soviet Union tovarish Stalin, Award to all soldiers of our military force, including you, who took part in the battle, and for taking the city oif Berlin.´ Signed at the base by Commander of the Guard Military Unit. LOUIS XIV: (1638-1715) Also known as Louis the Great or The Sun King. King of France 1643-1715. Son of Louis XIII. His reign of more than 72 years is the longest recorded of any monarch in European history. An extremely rare Autograph Letter, with paraph at the conclusion in the King´s hand, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. [March-April 1667], to Hugues de Lionne, in French. The King refers to two important crucial state affairs, stating `We must wait and see what the letter of Count of St. Albans will generate and consider constantly the honest means to get the peace.´ the King referring to the peace negotiations between England and the provinces of the Netherlands. Further saying `I approve your tought on Butti and I think he can serve usefully at the Conclave.´ referring this time to the difficult relationships between France and the Holy See and an expected prompt conclave. An extremely interesting and rare letter with very good historical content. With blank address leaf, written in the King´s hand `to Lionne´, and bearing remnants of a former seal. With a reputed collector´s small ink stamp, Victor Sanson, "VS", to the bottom right corner. Small overall creasing and age wear, otherwise G   Hugues de Lionne (1611-1671) French Statesman. Secretary to the Queen Regent Anne of Austria. As minister of state, he was associated with Mazarin in the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659) which secured the marriage of Louis XIV to the infanta Maria Theresa of Spain. Among his most important diplomatic successes were the Treaty of Breda (1667) and the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1668).The first State affair mentioned in the present letter refers to the Peace Treaty negotiations between England and the provinces of the Netherlands which started early 1667, France being involved in war against England since a year earlier January 1666. During the pourparler, Jean de Witt, representative of the provinces of the Netherlands, agreed with France to choose the city of Breda for the Peace Treaty signature. What is known as Treaty of Breda. Peace between France and England was signed a few months later on 31st July 1667.Henri Jermyn, Count of Saint Alban (1604-1684) emissary appointed by King Charles II of England.Louis XIV and Pope Alexander VII were in permanent quarrel, Alexander's pontificate was shadowed by continual friction with Cardinal Mazarin, adviser to King Louis XIV of France. The quarrel between Versailles and Rome resulted in Alexander VII's temporary loss of Avignon and his forced acceptance of the humiliating treaty of Pisa in 1664. At the time of the present letter, Louis XIV had been informed of the Pope´s poor health and, expecting a prompt end and conclave, sent his cardinals representatives to Rome, in order to impose his candidate Cardinal Giulio Rospigliosi (1600-1669), who would be elected few months later as Pope Clement IX on 26th June 1667. Louis XIV refers in the present letter to Butti, Abbot Francesco Butti (1604-1682), jurist and diplomat, close to Mazarin, who would later be a key figure in introducing Italian music in France. Butti was appointed by the King to Rome in 1667, with strict instructions to report daily to French Ambassador about the conclave progress.

ELIZABETH OF BAVARIA: (1876-1965) Queen consort of the Belgians 1909-34, as spouse of King Albert I. Mother of King Leopold III of Belgium and grandmother of Kings Baudouin and Albert II of Belgium. A.L.S., Elisabeth, one page, 8vo, La Panne, 29th July 1916, to Mrs. Wallace. A boldly and cleanly written letter by the Belgian Queen, in English, during World War One, stating in full `I thank you and all the ladies who have worked so faithfully for the splendid portable house which is the delight of one hundred children saved from danger. I am deeply touched by the generous help which American women and children have given to this work to which I am attached with all my heart.´ With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope. Post-marked with an ink stamp stating "Service du Roi". VG

HAILE SELASSIE I: (1892-1975) Ethiopian Regent Plenipotentiary 1916-30 and Emperor 1930-74. An extremely rare, early A.L.S., as Negus Tafari, and in his capacity as 'Heir to the Imperial Throne and Regent of the Ethiopian Empire', one page, n.p., (Addis Ababa?), 17th November 1928, to Pierre Alype, in Ge'ez. The Negus offers peace to his correspondent and continues 'Your letter, dated 8th October 1928, in which you were kind enough to send your wishes on the occasion of my elevation to the royal dignity and my coronation, has arrived', concluding 'I thank you for the wishes you expressed for the glory of my reign and the happiness of my family'. An official circular purple rubber stamp featuring the Lion of Judah and cross sceptre appears at the head of the page. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by a contemporary typed French translation. Autograph letters of Haile Selassie are extremely rare, particularly those signed before becoming Emperor. A few light, minor creases to the edges and the integral leaf almost completely detached at the vertical central fold, otherwise VG In 1916 Empress Zewditu I granted Haile Selassie the position of Balemulu Silt'an Enderase (Regent Plenipotentiary) and in 1928 she planned on elevating him to the throne of Shewa, however last minute opposition from certain provincial rulers caused a change and his title Negus (or King) was conferred, on 7th October 1928, just ten days before the present letter was signed, without geographical qualification or definition.

SIKORSKI WLADYSLAW: (1881-1943) Polish military and political leading figure who promoted the cause of the independence of Poland from the Russian Empire. He served as Prime Minister of Poland 1922-23, and of the Polish government in exile during WWII. Sikorski died in a plane crash, the circumstances of the accident still remaining unclear. A very good signed and inscribed 5 x 7 photograph, the Vandyk image showing Sikorski in a head and shoulders pose, wearing his military uniform and decorations. Signed in bold blue ink to the lower white border `Sikorski´, in Polish, and dated beneath `London 22nd July 1942´ in his hand. Bearing to the verso an ink stamp of the London Photographer Vandyk, 41, Buckingham Palace Road. Signed portraits of Sikorsky are rare in any form. Very small age ear and toning, otherwise G  Sikorski visited the England and the United States in 1942 looking for the allies support and pleading in favour of his invaded homeland. In his speeches he would say `The Polish Armed Forces have been fighting, are fighting and shall continue to fight on land, on sea and in the air, wherever the military forces of Germany can be destroyed.´

The first being a good and attractive multiple signed F.D.C, one page, oblong 4to, Pot Stanley, 14th June 1992. Signed in bold blue ink `Margaret Thatcher´, at the base of the envelope front, also signed by five additional personalities, including Rex Hunt (1926-2012) British Diplomat, Royal Air Force Pilot, and Governor, Commander-in-chief and Vice Admiral of the Falkland Islands; Julian Thompson (1934- ) British military Historian. Former Royal Marine Officer, Commander of the 3rd Commando Brigade during the Falklands War; Simon Weston (1961- ) British veteran, known throughout the United Kingdom for his recovery and charity work after suffering severe burn injuries during the Falklands War, Lord Carrington (1919- ) Foreign and Defence Secretary. The document being the commemorative presentation of the 10th Anniversary of Liberation of the Falkland Islands, showing four stamps. All have boldly signed to the front cover. Together with a very good signed F.D.C, one page, oblong 8vo, Greenwich, 12th January 1999. Signed in bold blue ink `Margaret Thatcher´, to a clear area of the colour printed envelope front. The document presents in a very attractive way a coin first day cover. Also signed by Denis Thatcher (1915-2003) Husband of Margaret Thatcher. Timekeeping was the subject of this celebratory coin edition limit. This issue features the first ever Royal Mail Millennium stamp. VG, 2

GUEVARA CHE: (1928-1967) Argentine Marxist Revolutionary & Guerrilla leader, a major figure in the Cuban Revolution. Two documents, the first being a D.S., Che, one page, oblong 12mo, n.p., Cuba, 27th February 1963, to Napoleon Seuc Chiu y Cité, in Spanish. The partially printed document, in Spanish, is a clipped piece, being the base part of an official notice, signed by Ché Guevara with his typically small signature, in bold black ink, in his capacity as Minister for Industry, and above the printed text “Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara - Ministro”. Bearing alongside an ink stamp of the Cuban Republic, Ministry of Industry. Also signed by Napoleon Seuc Chiu y Cité. Overall age toning, with irregular and slightly trimmed edges and corners, with small paper loss, none affecting the text or signature. Together with an original 7 x 5 attractive photograph, unsigned, showing Che Guevara standing, giving a speech to a crowd. Both documents have been lightly affixed to a black card. G

A good D.S. by the two major historical figures of the Cuban revolution, individually signed `Che´, and `Fidel Castro´, one page, folio, Cuba, 13th February 1960, in Spanish. The typed document bears the letter heading of the Treasury Ministry and reports on a legal procedure. Signed at the base by Castro and Guevara above their printed names “Fidel Castro Ruz” in his capacity as Prime Minister of Cuba and ““Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara - Ministro” as Minister of Industry. Bearing alongside an ink stamp of the Cuban Republic, Ministry of Industry. Overall creasing with small holes to the upper left corner due to former staples. G

HOCHE LAZARE: (1768-1797) French General of the Revolutionary army. Best known for his victory over Royalist forces in Brittany. Minister of war. Lazare died of tuberculosis at the early age of 29. An excellent L.S., with three autograph lines in is hand, `L. Hoche´, one page, 4to, n.p., [Vendée],  21st November 1796, to General Dugua, in French. The document states in part `Patriots are threatened and often slain by Royalists. Everything makes us fear a rekindle of the war in the Vendée if we do not hasten to stop the evil.´, further requesting troops to join them and the appointment of a commissar who would grant order and `..avoid contagious overflows..´. The document being the copy of a letter sent by the inhabitants of Lisieux to the Directory which Hoche forwards to General Dugua annotating alongside his signature `..to G[ener]al Dugua, who will be the General requested.´ Bearing a red ink Directory stamp to the upper left corner. A very good content and association letter. With edges slightly trimmed and overall small creasing. G   Charles François Dugua (1744-1802) French General. Present during Napoleon´s campaign in Egypt, commender of Cairo, further General of the West army and furthermore General Head of Staff under Lecrec at Saint Domingue. Killed during the attack to Fort Pierrot.

COCHON DE LAPPARENT CHARLES: (1750-1825) French Politician and Minister of Police. Member of the National Convention and of the Committee of Public Health. Cochon de Lapparent was one of the Commissars in charge of the King´s indictment, voting in favour of the King´s execution. An excellent and rare A.L.S., `Cochon´, four pages, 4to, Paris, 22nd October 1796, to General Hoche, in French. The document bears the printed heading, and an ink stamp, of the Minister of Police of the Republic. A very cleanly written lengthy letter, Cochon stating in part `I watch, my dear General, with same sadness as you, the direction that since a while the sense of Public spirit is taking, and am ready to prove with all my correspondence that I have done all I could with the power I hold to prevent the malicious trying to take advantage of the recent events…The government only wishes, and can´t do anything else but wishing, the consolidation of the Republic, and I support this as much as my poor capabilities allow me to do so. I am indignant reading about the horrors and the lies against the Republic that all these Royalist journals, paid with foreign gold, are vomiting. Best known for his victory over Royalist forces in Brittany. Minister of war. The Colonnes Mobiles, also called Colonnes Infernales (Infernal Columns) were operations led by the French revolutionary in the War in the Vendée. The National Convention approved laws allowing the extermination of anti-Republican terrorists in the Vendée. Army columns were formed and sent through the Vendée to exterminate the anti-republican population. The actions of these "Infernal Columns" continue to be a subject of heated debate in France.

BERTHIER LOUIS-ALEXANDRE: (1753-1815) Marshal of France, Prince of Neuchatel. Chief of Staff under Napoleon. Very rare L.S., `Ale[xand]r Berthier´, one page, 4to, Cairo, 7th November 1798, to M. Poussielgue, General Administrator of the Finances in Egypt, in French. A rare letter signed by Berthier from Cairo, referring to few objects given to Napoleon Bonaparte. The letter bears to the heading a stamp of the French Republic and the printed heading of “Citizen Alexandre Berthier, General of Division. Chief General-Staff of the Army”. Berthier refers to Napoleon stating `I send to you my dear Poussielgue the receipt for the several objects which have been given to me. I forward to you those that the General in Chief has not taken which are….object in silver, a teapot, horse chest protection..´ One light stain to the lower left border not affecting the text or signature. MARIE LOUISE DUCHESS OF PARMA: (1791-1847) Austrian Archduchess, the second wife of Napoleon. Empress of the French 1810-14. A good, large D.S., Marie Louise, as Regent Empress on behalf of Napoleon, one page (vellum), large oblong folio, Imperial Palace, St. Cloud, 3rd July 1813, in French. The partially printed document relates to Louis Pierre de Sainson, Lieutenant Colonel serving the King of Westphalia in his engineer topographic cabine, who is authorized to remain under the service of the King, having consulted a report given by the Minister of Justice, he `..Swears the oath to H.M. the King of Westphalia..´ under the rules given according to Imperial decree of the 6th April 1809 and 26th August 1811. Signed by the Empress at the foot, also bearing several countersignatures. A document in very fine condition. With the reputed Crawford collection ink stamp provenance to the bottom right corner. VG Jerome Bonaparte (1784-1860) King of Westphalia 1807-13 as Jerome I. Youngest brother of Napoleon I.

An excellent vintage signed and inscribed sepia 10 x 13 photograph of Gable standing in a three quarter length profile pose in costume as Fletcher Christian in a scene from the film Mutiny on the Bounty (1935). Photograph by Grimes of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and bearing their credit stamp to the verso. Signed in blue fountain pen ink by Gable across a light area of the image, 'To Irving, It was Mutiny on the Bounty!! Clark'; Charles Laughton (1899-1962) English Actor, Academy Award winner. An excellent vintage signed and inscribed sepia 10.5 x 13.5 photograph of Laughton standing in a half length pose in costume from one of his most famous screen roles as Captain William Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935). Photograph by Grimes of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and bearing their credit stamp to the verso. Signed by Laughton in bold black fountain pen ink to a clear area of the image, 'For Irving from Charlie (you must be sick of my face)'. Both Gable and Laughton received Best Actor Academy Award nominations for their roles in Mutiny on the Bounty and the film itself won a Best Picture Oscar. A rare and desirable pair of signed photographs. Some very slight corner and surface creasing, one small tear to the right white border of Laughton's photograph and two very small areas of paper loss to two corners of the border and not affecting the image. About VG, 2 The present photographs were inscribed by Gable and Laughton to Irving Glassberg (1906-1958) Polish-American Cinematographer.
