Document individually signed by the three military heroes `Pijon´, `René´, and `Y. Pastol´. One page, oblong large folio, Lausanne, 15th February 1798. The partially printed document bearing the heading of the 18th brigade of infantry is a granted leave in favour of François Salle `..having been wounded by a gun shot during the 29th Fructidor affair.., referring to the Biberach battle, with a French victory under the lead of Moreau. Also bearing an ink stamp and a red wax seal. Countersigned by General Jean Fugiere (1752-1813). Folded. VG £200-300

BONNARD CHARLES & BISSON BAPTISTE: Charles Bonnard (1754-1800) & Baptiste Bisson (1767-1811) French Generals. Both renowned alcoholics. Bonnard was suspended for his misuse of the public funds and committed suicide during an alcoholic crisis. Bisson was known as "The Obese" and was even receiving an extra salary payment to attend his appetite and thirst for alcohol. A very attractive D.S., one page, oblong folio, Brussels, 23rd July 1798, to Jean Quimpe, in French. Individually signed by both generals (`Bonnard´) and (`Bisson´) at the base of the document. The partially printed document being a leave given to Quimpe because of the wounds he has suffered in June 1793 related to the Arlon affair. With several countersignatures to the front and verso, a war commissair ink stamp, and an excellent red wax seal to the upper left front corner. Folded. Small overall, minor age wear, with very small tears to the edges. G £100-150

Fouché responds to his correspondent´s request and instructs the police prefect `..include citizen Hugues Botten Castellamonte in the group of Italian patriots with authorised stay in Paris..´ With an autograph annotation as response by Maret. With blank address leaf bearing remnants of a red wax seal and a red ink stamp. VG £300-400

FRENCH NAVY 1802: An attractive naval document, one page, large folio, Bordeaux, 20th November 1802, in French. The partially printed document, bearing an attractive and large ornated naval heading, is a leave authorization given to the schooner Les Deux Amis (`The Two Friends´), permitting navigation under French flag and Captain Larrieu `Departing from port of Bordeaux to Martinique with the wine content´. The document bears a red ink stamp of the French Republic and is countersigned by General Gudin. Signed to the verso by commissar of St. Domingue, stating that the vessel was sold at The Cap in June 1803 to John Suckley & Co. Folded. VG £200-300

TURTLE ISLAND - PASSPORT: A well-known island which used to be a pirate hideaway during the seventeenth century. D.S., one page, oblong 4to, Turtle Island, 9th August 1795, in French. The partially printed document, bearing at the heading the French Republic motto, is signed with ink stamp of General Jean Cornu de la Poype (1758-1851), in his capacity as Commander of the north department of the Saint Domigue island, and countersigned by the military Commander. The document is a passport given to Jean Dupuy stating `Captain of the schooner Minerve, pass for three days, going to Môle to treat his own affairs..´  Edges irregularly trimmed, and overall creasing. SONTHONAX LEGER & POLVEREL ETIENNE: Léger-Félicité Sonthonax(1763-1813) and Etienne Polverel (1740-1795) First French abolitionist Legislators. Civil Commissars in Saint Domingue, they promulgated the full abolition of slavery in the north province of the island. A very interesting L.S., `Sonthonax´, and `Polverel´ twice,one page, folio, Port-au-Prince, 29th April 1793. The present letter was written only two months before the promulgation of abolition and is signed by both legislators in the name of the French republic and in their capacities as `Delegates in the French Islands of America to re-establish the public order and peace.´  The document is an order given to the Commandant of Port-au-Prince stating `..to arrest immediately citizen Madame Chavanne and to take him provisionally on board the vessel of the Republic called Eole, until we give further orders..´ The document bears an ink stamp to the front with printed letters “Civil National Convention, delegation in Saint Domingue – In the Nation´s Name”. With blank integral leaf. VG   £200-300    The arrest order most probably correspond to the wife of black General abolitionist Jean-Baptiste Chavanne (1748-1791) Haitian abolitionist who, together with mulatto Vincent Ogé (1755-1791) leaded the first revolt claiming for the freedom of all slaves. They were arrested and sentenced to be hammered to death, showing great bravery during is terrible torture in the presence of assembly members and authorities.

Former world nº 1, he won 14 Grand Slam titles. Perry was the first player to win a `Career Grand Slam´ winning all four singles titles. Signed 6 x 4 page (`Fred Perry´), removed from an autograph album, bearing two small paper images affixed to the page ; HENRI COCHET (1901-1987) French tennis Player. Cochet won four Rolland Garros singles titles and fifteen Grand Slam titles in total. Signed 3.5 x 1 clipped piece `H.Cochet´, and JEAN BOROTRA (1898-1994) French tennis Player. Borotra won the Australian, the French and Wimbledon Grand Slam tournaments. Signed Commemorative Cover, `J.Borotra´, issued by the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum. The large partially printed document, bearing the A. Lumiere & Sons printed heading, being a signed cheque by Auguste Lumiere, Lyon, 23rd March 1897, is made payable to Gouyx & Co for the sum of 27.55 Fr. The document bears a large number of ink stamps, tax stamps, cancellations and countersignatures to the front and verso, including a second signature by Auguste Lumiere to the verso, beneath the Lumiere & Sons ink stamp. DANTON GEORGES: (1759-1794) Leading figure of the French Revolution and first President of the Committee of Public Safety. Danton voted for the death of Louis XVI in 1793. Guillotined by the advocates of revolutionary terror. An excellent and rare L.S., Danton, one page, large folio, Paris, 13th August 1792, in French. The hand written letter being a decree of the National Assembly related to the 10th August Storming of the Tuileries Palace and the Swiss Guards behaviour, stating `By decree, the National Assembly establishes that the Minister of war will send an urgent report to this Assembly explaining the reasons which have forced Captains Buxdorf, Bourcand and Salis Scevis to resignate and about Lieutenant Colonel Bachman´s behaviour..´ Bearing at the base a red ink stamp. Accompanied by a contemporary 9 x 14 engraving showing Danton´s portrait and biography. Folded. VG, 2 £1500-2000Niklaus Franz von Bachmann (1740-1831) Swiss General of the Napoleonic wars. Brother of Karl Joseph von Bachmann, Commander of the Swiss Guards. Bachman is at the origin of the today´s date flag, being the first during the Second Coalition to re-introduce to his troops the old Swiss symbol of the white cross on a red field which had not been used anymore since the Middle Ages.

DON CAMILLO: FERNANDEL (1903-1971) Fernand Cantandin. French Actor. An excellent signed and inscribed 5 x 7 photograph by Fernandel, the original Sam Levin image depicting the French actor in a smiling head and shoulders pose. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink (`For Paul Maes, Cordially, Fernandel´), also dated 1957 in his hand. Also including GINO CERVI (1901-1974) Italian Actor. Scarce signed and inscribed 5 x 7 photograph, the Sam Levin image showing Cervi in formal head and shoulders pose. Inscribed to André Journiaux. Both photographs bearing to the verso a Sam Levin photographer ink stamp. VG, 2 £150-200Don Camillo were a series of five French-Italian comedy films, between 1952 and 1965, starring Fernandel as the Italian priest Don Camillo and Gino Cervi as the communist Mayor of their rural town. Don Camillo is a character created by the Italian writer and journalist Giovanni Guareschi, whose name, and some of his character, is based on an actual Roman Catholic priest, a WWII partisan and detainee at the concentration camps of Dachau and Mauthausen named Don Camillo Valota (1912-1998). André Jouniaux (1924-2013), French author of the song `La Chanson de Catherine´ which was performed by Edith Piaf and later by Juliette Gréco.

ALECHINSKY PIERRE: (1927- ) Belgian abstract Artist. An attractive F.D.C., signed and inscribed by Alechinsky, one page, oblong folio card, Paris, 12th October 1985, in French. Signed and inscribed in pencil by Alechinsky (`For Axel, Alechinsky´) and dated 30th March 2009 in his hand. The document being the commemorative presentation of a 5,00 Francs French Republic stamp showing an Alechinsky´s work. With three binder holes to the left removable border. A numbered copy of an attractive document, with a printed short biography of Alechinsky. EX £100-150The stamp is depicting a work by Alechinsky, being a tribute to Michel Butor (1926-2016) a French writer. To the stamp background Alechinsky features a Butor´s manuscript. Butor, as well as Alechinsky, was a passionate of the book the wheel and the snake, an esoteric symbol of the movement and the eternity.

Together with A.L.S., Marcel Prevost, one page, 8vo, bearing an ink stamp from his own library, being a fourteen verses poem entitled Sonnet sur une épure, a youth work by Prevost stating `..Vois ce joli contour, cette ligne si pure, - Le point rond s'unissant au trait fin continu, - Vois le commun solide ombré comme nature - Par le raisonnement dans les airs soutenu..´; Also including A.L.S., Marcel Prevost, on a postcard showing to the front an image his property of Chateau de la Roche. Also including an original 3 x 5 unsigned cabinet photograph depicting Prevost in uniform during WWI. G to VG, 4 £80-100

CHAUMETTE PIERRE: (1763-1794) French Prosecutor of the Parisian Commune and Spokesperson of the Sans-Culottes. Guillotined together with the Hebertists. L.S., Chaumette, one page, 4to, Paris, 13th October 1793, in French. The partially printed document bears the heading of the Commune of Paris, Chaumette stating `..the allowance to be approved for citizen Berthelemy, whose accommodation and furniture was used to host the prisoners at the Temple.´ Also bearing an ink stamp of the French Republic. The present letter was written only three days after Marie Antoinette was executed. Very small repair to the verso, otherwise VG £400-600Barthélémy was the archivist of the Order of Malta who was moved out from his own home, converted from then as the Prison of the Temple by the Commune. Marie-Antoinette and his daughter used his bedroom while imprisoned. This fortress only had the Royal family as prisoners.

Baden Powell, one page, 4to, London, 27th March 1897, to the editor of the magazine The Aeronaute. The letter bears at the heading an ink stamp of the “Aeronautical Society of Great Britain”. Baden Powell thanks his correspondent for the last edited copy he kindly sent to him and states `Would you be so good as to send me the number for January also, in order that I may insert a notice of it in the next number of our journal..´ VG  £80-100

The document being an appointment given by the King to Francisco Azcue as Mayor of the city of Segovia. The document bears an ink stamp at the heading showing “Carolus III - Hispania Rex” Bearing to the second page several countersignatures beneath the King´s stamped signature, including the King´s secretary Don Andrés de Otamendi. Very small holes to the centre fold. Small tear to the right edge, otherwise G £100-150

A stamp showing Juan Carlos I, being the same image of the photograph, has been affixed to the upper right side of the photograph with an ink stamp beneath from the Philatelic Post service of Madrid, dated 22nd November 1978, commemorating the issue of this post stamp. Boldly signed by the King to the lower photographer´s mount, and dated 1978 in his hand. Also bearing a second identical ink stamp to the lower white photographer´s mount. Attractively matted in beige, framed in dark red wood and gilt, and glazed to an overall size of 12 x 14 (30 x 35 cm). VG £150-200

Signed colour 8 x 10 photograph, the image depicting a very young Philip VI, as Prince of Asturias, in a head and shoulders. A stamp showing Prince Philip, being the same image of the photograph, has been affixed to the lower left side of the photograph with an ink stamp beneath from the Asturias Principality, commemorating the issue of this post stamp. Boldly signed in bold black ink by the young Prince to the lower part of the image. Matted in white, framed in silver wood, and glazed to an overall size of 13 x 15 (33 x 38 cm). VG £120-150

D.S., Prosper Sijas, one page, 4to, n.p., 6th December 1793, to Lieutenant Caylan, in French. The Partially printed document, bearing the heading of the War Ministry and the printed motto `Liberté, Egalité ou la Mort´, (`Freedom, Equality or Death´), is a certificate granting Caylan´s appointment as Lieutenant. With blank integral leaf. With an ink `bonnet´stamp to the front page. VG £80-100

ROBESPIERRE AUGUSTIN: (1763-1794) Also known as Robespierre the Young. Younger brother of Maximilien and Deputy of the convention. He was guillotined, at the early age of 31, as accomplice of Maximilien Robespierre. D.S., Robespierre, one page, folio, Nice, 29th May 1794, on the Convention Deputies of the Alpes Maritimes, army of Italy army printed stationery, in French. The partially printed document is an order to pay 300.000 Pounds to the commissar in charge of the uniforms supply. Countersigned by Dutramblay. The present letter was signed only two months before being executed. Bearing a black ink stamp beneath Robespierre´s signature `Representative of the People at the Army of Italy´. Also bearing a red ink stamp of the National Treasury and a red wax seal of the French republic representatives in good condition to the front. VG £400-600Such an important amount of money was most probably related to the expedition to Corsica. On 25th May 1794 several battalions from the army of Italy arrived to Toulon and were going to embark to Corsica. But the expedition never departed as the English-Corsican Kingdom was created on 19th June 1794.

[THE GIRONDINISTS ESCAPE]: Charles Jean Barbaroux (1767-1794) member of the convention. Guillotined at the early age of 27. D.S., Barbaroux, two pages, folio, 15th November 1792, in French. Barbaroux orders the opening of the depots and stores which were previously sealed, allowing the inspection of the Convention Commissars. Countersigned by Deputy Jean DeBry. With a Convention paper seal affixed to the front. Very slightly professionally repaired to the verso. With an ink collection stamp to the bottom right corner; François Nicolas Buzot (17 60-1794) Member of the Convention. He committed suicide. A.L.S., f.n.l. Buzot, one page, oblong 8vo, 28th February. Buzot lends an English book to his correspondent stating `I am flattered feeling that I help a citizen whose works have pleased and teached me..´ With blank address leaf; Jérôme Pétion de Villeneuve (1756-1794) Vice-Mayor of Paris and Convention Deputy. He committed suicide; Together with a D.S., one page, folio, Paris, 31st August 1792, to Charles Fortair. The document being an order to General Dumouriez aide-de-camp. With a Paris town hall paper seal affixed to the front. Countersigned by war Minister Servan de Gerbey. Also including a written text corresponding to a law approved, two pages, large folio, 8th March 1795, with the equality justice monogramme at the heading. The document refers to the Representative´s of the People list, the list of the ones accused, and those who will become part of the National Convention. Further referring to Delahaye (1761-1819), stating `..Deputy Lahaye is not included in the previous list. The Public Safety Committee and the one of National Security are instructed to make a prompt report about him.´ With a red wax seal of the Republic to the front. G, 4 £500-800Barbaroux, Buzot and Petion having learned about the order to arrest them, as traitors, escape and hide themselves at Saint-Émilion during ten months. A shepherd identified them and feeling they were about to be caught up they decided to shoot themselves. Petion and Buzot committed suicide. Barbaroux shoot himself but did not die. He would be guillotined shortly after.

BOURBOTTE PIERRE: (1763-1795) National Convention Deputy. Guillotined together with the Prairial insurgents. D.S., Bourbotte, one page, folio, dated 24th January 1795, in French. The partially printed attractive document being a decree issued by the war committee for the requisition of a cart and two horses and bears a large printed heading of the war committee with the revolution motto. With an ink stamp at the base alongside seven additional countersignatures by Convention Deputies Etienne Honoré Le Tourneur (1751-1817), Etienne Gossuin (1758-1827), Edmond Jean Baptiste Milhaud (1766-1833), Antoine Lémane (1749-1818), François Aubry (1747-1798), Pierre Joseph François Bodin (1748-1809) and Alexandre Paul de Chateauneuf-Randon (1757-1827). VG £150-200

SIEYES EMMANUEL: (1748-1836), MERLIN DE DOUAI PHILIPPE (1754-1838) and REUBELL JEAN FRANÇOIS (1747-1807), National Convention Deputies. D.S., by the three Convention members, one page, large 11 x 20 folio, 9th March, 1795, in French. The partially printed document, being a passport, bears a very large and attractive French Republic heading showing Marianne, France's national symbol of liberty, treading the Royal sceptre. The passport allows travelling out of France, and is made in favour of Jean Baptiste Bouillerot travelling to Switzerland. With an ink Republic stamp to the front. VG £300-400

FAURE LOUIS-JOSEPH: (1760-1837) French Deputy Prosecutor of the Revolutionary Tribunal. He was replaced by Fouquier-Tinville. Faure was one of the four authors of the Napoleon code. L.S., Faure, two pages, 4to, Paris, 21st July 1795, on the printed stationery of the Public Prosecutor, Criminal Tribunal. Faure referring to the arrested citizen Barthelemy Gando, states `convinced that he has been participating in this crime, helping to introduce in French territory and issuing national documents, and being in possession of assignats, he has been condemned yesterday and sentenced to death, with all his belongings confiscated in the benefit of the Republic.´ The document bears the bonnet printed heading and an ink stamp. VG £150-200

COLLOT D´HERBOIS & BILLAUD-VARENNE : Jean Marie Collot d´Herbois (1749-1796) French Actor, Dramatist and Revolutionary. President of the National Convention in June 1793. Although he saved Madame Tussaud from the guillotine, d'Herbois administered the execution of more than 2,000 people in the city of Lyon during the Reign of Terror; Jacques Nicolas Billaud-Varenne (1756-1819) French Revolutionary, often considered a key architect of the period known as The Reign of Terror. Both Collot D´Herbois and Billaud-Varenne were members of the Committee of Public Safety and were sentenced to deportation to French Guiana after their involvement in the 12th Germinal insurrection (1st April 1795). An excellent selection of documents comprising an extremely rare A.L.S., `Collot´ by Colot D´herbois´ wife, Anne Catherine Catrais (1759-1810) and countersigned `Billaud´ by Billaud-Varenne´s wife, Anne Angélique Doye, one page, 4to, to Paul Barras. The letter is written six months after their husbands were condemned and sent to French Guiana and is a plea to Barras, very recently appointed main executive leader of the Directory regime, and states in part `..because your report has to be issued this evening...we beg you to support our request to the Directory regarding their deliberation... in our favour. We wait and expect all from you..´. Their request never got a response; Together with a printed report entitled `..for the examination of Collot D´Herbois and Billaud-Varenne´s behaviour, people´s representatives..´ by Saladin, member of the Convention, 50 pages, 8vo, 3rd March 1795. The denounce mentions their complicity with Robespierre and St-Just; Also including an excellent D.S., by Jacques Nicolas Billaud-Varenne, Jean Marie Collot d'Herbois, Lazare Carnot (1753-1823) and Robert Lindet (1746-1825), one page, folio, Public Safety heading and is individually signed by these four Convention leaders. Accompanied by two printed decrees, the first from 12th Germinal, including 22 articles, eight pages, 4to, bearing a red ink stamp, and the second from 29th Germinal, three pages, 4to, listing the commissions members; Also including an extremely rare A.L.S., by Billaud-Varenne (`Billaud-Varenne´), two pages, 4to, from L´Hermitage, French Guiana, 4th October 1814, to Riviere-Oncle. Billaud-Varenne, pardoned by Napoleon, remains in French Guiana as farmer, and states `The nigger who brought your objects has told me that the buffet you have ordered to make for me is now finished. As I have no craft, I will write to...´ further saying `..I am involved in the exploitation of my mangroves, and this is a task that I can´t leave not even an instant..´ With blank integral leaf. G to VG, 6 £1000-1200 Paul Barras (1755-1829) French Politician during revolution, President of the National Convention and the main executive Leader of the Directory regime of 1795-99.

The partially printed document bearing the Rhin & Moselle army printed heading, Vignes in his capacity as Chief of Brigade issues a certificate in favour of Captain Poulat, reporting on his loyal and good services given. Countersigned by the Commissair of war and several members of the Committee. Bearing an ink stamp of the infantry brigade. Small stains to the edges. Folded. G £150-200

A fine 19th century French Japanese-style (Japonaise) lacquered brass repeating carriage clock by A. Dumas. With faux bamboo column supports and three komei type bronze overlay panels, the sides depict figures at various pursuits and the dial mask is ornamented with a swan. With silvered dial under a copper slip and having black enamel Roman numeral markers. Housing an 8 day movement with platform escapement striking half hourly on a gong and with repeating mechanism. Makers stamp A. D. underneath the case, 19.5cm high including the handle extended, 10.75cm wide, 10cm deep. Condition Report. To be used as a guide only. Running. Sold with the original key its number matching that on the backplate. Slight lacquer wear only.

It is stamped on the ricasso '1913' and with the Remington roundel together with '5 17' date (May 1917). The reverse has a British Inspection stamp. A Victorian brass cylindrical corkscrew by Robert Jones & Son No 2, the plain cylinder with raised banded decoration and inscribed "Robert Jones S & Son Makers 105 Cheapside Birmingham", with Victorian kite mark verso, the rosewood handle with brush missing, 15 cm long CONDITION REPORTS Looks to have been in poor state and somewhat restored. Handle haas been badly damaged. Chips, losses, scratches and splits and subsequently re-varnished perhaps. There is no bruch. The metal ware is generally rusty under the Robert Jones & Son stamp. An area has been scratched off vigorously. Various further scratches and marks, pitted marks to the body. An area of rust to the top of the brass barrel. Interior shows rusting. The two spikes that come down either side of the screw appear to have been bent and the screw itself appears not to have the whole length and has been broken and lost. The iron shaft with corrosion and rust and pitted marks. All over considerable signs of wear and tear - see images for further details. Considerable signs of wear and tear throughout, not in good condition. Also extreme wear to the screw attached to the handle, missing section, rust pitted etc
