HEBERT JACQUES R.: ( - ) French-Canadian Aviator, the first Canadian to fly from England to Australia. A rare Flown Cover Signed by Hebert, bearing the typed caption England..Australia Flight. Darwin..Sydney by courtesy J. R. Hebert Esq and with an Australia postage stamp post marked at Brisbane, Queensland, 12th December 1932. Signed by Hebert in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to a clear area. VG Only 12 examples of the present cover were flown by Hebert on this particular leg of his historic flight.

HUGHES HOWARD: (1905-1976) American Business Tycoon, Philanthropist & Aviator. A rare Air Mail cover issued for Howard Hughes and the New York World's Fair of 1939 individually signed by Hughes and the four crew members of his Around the World record breaking flight upon which the cover was flown, Thomas Thurlow (Navigator), Harry Connor (Navigator), Richard Stoddart (Radio Engineer) and Edward Lund (Flight Engineer). All have signed in dark fountain pen inks with their names alone to clear areas. The cover is addressed to Earl Daley of the Hughes Aircraft Company in Hollywood and bears several cachets and postage stamps tracking the flight, including two US postage stamps post marked at New York on 10th July 1938 (day of departure) and 14th July 1938 (day of return), a French postage stamp post marked 11th July 1938 and a Russian postage stamp post marked at Moscow on 12th July 1938. Only a small number of covers were carried on the Lockhead Super Electra piloted by Hughes on his record breaking world flight of just 91 hours and those that were were only given to people associated with the flight; furthermore an even smaller number of the covers were signed by Hughes and his crew. The present example was apparently previously owned by Nadine Henley, secretary to Hughes. VG

STAGG JAMES: (1900-1975) British Royal Air Force Group Captain of World War II. Chief Meteorological Officer for Operation Overlord, Stagg notably persuaded General Dwight D. Eisenhower to change the date of the Allied Invasion of Europe from 5th June to 6th June 1944. D.S., J M Stagg, on one side of a postcard, Royal Meteorological Society, London, 3rd November 1955. The typed document confirms that Stagg will serve on the Scientific Activities Fund Committee for 1955/56, however he adds a holograph statement beneath, signed with his initials ('JMS'), and reading, in full, 'but I should be quite happy to give up my seat if anyone else is anxious to fill it. Please have no hesitation in leaving me out of membership when you want to'. With Royal Meteorological Society red oval received date stamp. One light vertical fold to the centre, not affecting the signature, otherwise VG

WINEHOUSE AMY: (1983-2011) English Singer. A selection of five autograph envelopes, unsigned, each hand addressed by Winehouse to her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil ('B. Civil WA7614') at H.M.P. Edmunds Hill in Newmarket, Suffolk. Four of the envelopes are annotated to the verso by Winehouse with various brief, romantic notes ('My heart's desire is purely you, Oh Blakey my all-at-sea Sailor', 'S.W.A.C.K. Sealed with a Cartier kiss' etc.) and are also illustrated with numerous drawings of hearts, anchors etc. Each of the envelopes are post marked at St Lucia between January and February 2009 and all also bear the received stamp and date of H.M.P. Edmunds Hill. Some light age wear, G (1) to generally VG, 5 The present envelopes originally accompanied letters written towards the end of the singer's marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil (1978- ), their divorce being granted in July 2009 and becoming final the following month. At the time of the present envelopes being received Fielder-Civil was imprisoned following his guilty plea on charges of trying to pervert the course of justice.

'…Send me a signal bruv….' WINEHOUSE AMY: (1983-2011) English Singer. A rare A.L.S., your wife, your Amy xx, one page, 4to, St. Lucia, West Indies, n.d. (c.February 2009), to her husband Blake Fielder-Civil ('My husband Blake'). Winehouse writes, in full, 'We need to sit down and be able to look into each other's eyes. YOU KNOW THIS. Don't be a silly sausage. Send me a signal bruv. I want a V[isiting] O[rder].' Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Winehouse to her husband ('B. Civil WA7614') at H. M. P. Edmunds Hill in Newmarket, Suffolk. The singer has boldly penned Air Mail to the envelope in light green ink and also added the words 'Love my Blake' and five hearts and four kisses to the verso. Post marked at St. Lucia and bearing a Received stamp at H. M. P. Edmunds Hill, dated 5th February 2009. VG The present letter is written towards the end of the singer's marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil (1978- ), their divorce being granted in July 2009 and becoming final the following month. At the time of the present letter Fielder-Civil was imprisoned following his guilty plea on charges of trying to pervert the course of justice.

Bearing a German postage stamp and post marked at Biebrich to the recto and with two further post marks to the verso. The post marks only very slightly affect the text. Some light overall age wear, about VG Wendelin Weissheimer (1838-1910) German Composer, Conductor & Music Writer. He studied with Franz Liszt and was in close contact with Richard Wagner and other composers.

Walter thanks his correspondent for their kind lines and for some eggs, remarking 'they considerably embellished my stay here'. With a circular received stamp dated 8th November 1946 to the upper right corner. About VG

Rodin arranges an appointment with his correspondent for 4pm the following day, explaining that 'I have to go and run some errands at 4.30' and also offering the option of meeting on Friday. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Rodin (stamp torn away and various tears and paper loss, only FR). VG

SHAW GEORGE BERNARD: (1856-1950) Irish Playwright, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1925. A.L.S., with his initials GBS, on one side of his printed correspondence card, Ayot St Lawrence, Welwyn, Hertfordshire, 7th March 1938, to Marcel Sternberger. Shaw proposes an appointment with his correspondent, writing '10.30 on Friday morning at 4 Whitehall Court is the only moment I can spare this week' and further remarks 'Thanks for the stamp, an admirable example of the new picture-portrait style'. Hand addressed by Shaw to the verso, which also features a red 1d postage stamp (possibly the one referred to by Shaw) bearing a profile portrait of King George VI. The verso shows extensive overall traces of glue stains and former mounting, however the holograph address, stamp and postmark remain perfectly legible. About VG Marcel Sternberger (1899-1956) Hungarian Portrait Photographer whose subjects included Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein and, indeed, George Bernard Shaw.

LESLIE JOHN: (1766-1832) Scottish Mathematician & Physicist, remembered for his research into heat. D.S., John Leslie, one page, slim oblong 8vo, Edinburgh, 10th March 1813. The holograph document is a promissory note addressed to Messrs. John Ballantyne & Co. of Edinburgh and states 'Three months after date pay to my order the sum of One hundred & seventy five pounds value in acct.' With blind embossed revenue stamp to the upper left corner. A few ink annotations and ink stroke marks, as a form of cancellation, only very slightly affect the text but not the signature. PASTEUR LOUIS: (1822-1895) French Chemist & Microbiologist. A good vintage signed 10 x 13 engraving by Pasteur, the fine oval image being a proof by Henriquel-Dupont (1884) and depicting the chemist in a head and shoulders pose. With an attractive decorative border. Signed ('L Pasteur') in pencil to the lower margin with a few additional words ('Bon comme ton') in his hand, in French, approving the tone of the engraving. With a slightly illegible oval rubber stamp beneath the image dated 27th June 1884. Some extremely minor, light foxing to the white margins, otherwise VG Louis Pierre Henriquel-Dupont (1797-1892) French Engraver.
