LMS solid silver presentation KEY engraved LONDON MIDLAND & SCOTTISH RAILWAY with full Coat Of Arms one side and the other PRESENTED TO HIS WORSHIP THE MAYOR OF SOUTHEND-ON-SEA COUNCILLOR H. S. FRITH BY SIR JOSIAH C. STAMP GBS CHAIMAN AND PRESIDENT OF THE LM&SR RLY COY ON THE OCCASION OF THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE NEW LEIGH-ON-SEA STATION ON THE 4 JAN 1934. Measures 5in long and is hallmarked London 1933 Sterling Silver. A truly historic item in excellent condition. A photocopy of a picture showing the ceremony is included.
FRENCH FOOTBALL Two 7" x 10" press photographs showing the captains of Le Havre and Atlanta exchanging pennants and the captains of Inter Milan and Racing Club also exchanging pennants. Both games took place in 1959 in the Coupe de L'Amitie or La Coppa Dell Amici . Photos have stamp of Olympia Agenzia Milano on the reverse. Good
Africa.- Thomson (Joseph) To the Central African Lakes and Back, 2 vol., first edition, half-title, mounted photographic portrait frontispieces (vol. 1, laid down), 2 folding colour maps, both with small areas of loss and laid down, ink stamp erased from verso titles, 32pp. publishers' catalogue at end vol. 2, original cloth bound in, modern half morocco, gilt, 1881; and another by the same, 8vo (3)⁂ Thomson was a Scottish geologist and explorer who accompanied Alexander Keith Johnston on his expedition to establish a route from Dar es Salaam to Lake Nyasa and Lake Taganyika. Johnston died during the trip and Thomson took over leadership of the expedition, travelling 3,000 miles in 14 months.
Canada.- Cartwright (George) A Journal of Transactions and Events, during a Residence of nearly Sixteen Years on the Coast of Labrador..., 3 vol. in 1, first edition, engraved portrait frontispiece of the author visiting his fox-traps (lightly offset on title), list of subscribers, 2 large folding engraved maps (some tears neatly repaired), light staining to a few leaves, 3D1 with paper flaw tear to lower margin, unobtrusive embossed library stamp to a couple of leaves, a good uncut copy on large paper with wide margins, bound in handsome modern dark blue straight-grain morocco with gilt-tooled borders of Greek key and leafy sprays, spine gilt in compartments with five double raised bands, uncut, [Sabin 11150], 4to, Newark, 1792. ⁂ Cartwright was a British officer who made six expeditions to Newfoundland and Labrador between 1770 and 1786, hunting and trapping. His account includes descriptions of the animals, particularly foxes and beavers, and the native Indians and Eskimos. Please note: Lot 183 – this appears to be a made-up copy with the frontispiece portrait, title and folding maps mounted on stubs, and the portrait (which is on thicker paper) and the ‘Explanation of the Frontispiece’ leaf being shorter
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) Christ Crucified Between the Two Thieves: an oval plate, etching, a good impression of New Hollstein's second state (of three), on laid paper with partial watermark of Strasbourg lily (similar to Hinterding's B-i, datable to 1650s), platemark 133 x 98 mm. (5 1/4 x 3 7/8 in), sheet 136 x 101 mm. (5 3/8 x 4 in), tipped onto paper support along left edge, minor surface dirt, unframed, circa 1641 and later. Albumasar. De magnis coniunctionibus, [edited by Johannes Angelus], collation: A-N8, O6, P8, 118 leaves, typically 40 lines, Gothic type, numerous woodcut illustrations and diagrams, 6-line decorative initials, stain to margin of c.50 ff. (fairly extensive on c.20 ff., just touching letters on 3), repair to f3, blind-stamp in the margin of 4 ff., hinges reinforced, ownership inscription "W.B. Thorpe, 11/10/71" on front free endpaper, large library bookplate on front pastedown, 18th century calf, rebacked in later calf, corners badly worn, small sticker on upper cover, near foot of spine, [BMC II 383; Goff A360; Hain 611*], small 4to (209 x 145 mm.), [Augsburg], Erhard Ratdolt, [March, 1489].⁂ First edition of this scarce work presenting the philosophical and historical justifications for astrology. The text was one of the earliest and most important vehicles for the transmission of Aristotelian concepts to the west. (Richard Lamay Abu Ma'shar and Latin Aristotelianism in the Twelfth Century... , 1962). Albumasar, the most renowned of astologers writing in Arabic, was part of the group of pro-Persian intellectuals who served the Caliph al-Ma'mun (813-833) in Baghdad. The present work is a slightly abridged version of his Kitab al-mudkhal al-kabir ila 'ilm ahkam al-nujjum (Great Introduction to the Science of Astrology), written in about 848-850.
A collection of items to include a 19th Century Grand Tour Souvenir tortoiseshell purse with an inset picture of Milan Cathedral / Duomo di Milano together with a fantastic carved Tortoise of small proportions ( believed Japanese ) signed to the base, an early 20th Century brass stamp box and a miniature brass miners lamp. Highest measures 7.5 cm.
