NOBEL PRIZE WINNERS: An excellent multiple signed commemorative cover issued in honour of Fritz Pregl and featuring his colour image and a postage stamp with his portrait, post marked in Vienna, 12th December 1973, individually signed by Werner Heisenberg (1901-1976, German theoretical physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics 1932), Feodor Lynen (1911-1979, German biochemist, Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine, 1964), Manfred Eigen (1927-2019, German biophysical chemist, Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry, 1967) and Ernst Otto Fischer (1918-2007, German chemist, Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry, 1973). All have signed in blue inks to clear areas of the cover, Eigen adding the place and date, Gottingen, 27th August 1974, in his hand. BRANLY EDOUARD: (1844-1940) French inventor & physicist, primarily known for his early involvement in wireless telegraphy. A.L.S., E. Branly, one page, 8vo, n.p., 23rd January 1929, to an unidentified correspondent, in French. Branly informs his correspondent that 'I sent my acceptation on the date indicated' and further adds 'I have just found the mislaid paper; I am placing my signature on it. This will be preferable for uniformity'. Together with an unrelated autograph envelope, unsigned, addressed in Branly's hand to Monsieur Claude, an architect in Paris and post marked 14th February 1925. The letter is a little irregularly torn to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature, and the envelope has had the original postage stamp torn away. G to VG, 2
TESLA NIKOLA: (1856-1943) Serbian-American Inventor and Engineer. Best-known for his contributions to the design of alternating current electricity supply systems. Tesla worked for a short time at the Edison Company before he set up laboratories and companies to develop his own ideas and devices. Edison and Tesla animosity toward each other was much commented during their lives. Very rare D.S., `Nikola Tesla´, being a signed cheque, Broadway, New York, 26th December 1934. The partially printed cheque, filled out by the representatives of the Royal Yugoslav Consulate General in New York and signed by the Yugoslavian Consul General, is drawn on The Chase National Bank and is made payable to Dr. Nikola Tesla for the sum of $125.00. Signed to the verso by Tesla as recipient. With bank cancellation, and a bank ink stamp cancellation to the verso, none of them affecting the signature. One extremely small pinhole, otherwise VG
HEDIN SVEN: (1865-1952) Swedish geographer and explorer who, during several expeditions to Central Asia, mapped the Great Wall of China amongst other locations. Vintage signed 4 x 6 postcard photograph of Hedin in a profile head and shoulders pose. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink at the head of the image and dated 1950 in his hand. With an A.L.S., Sven Hedin, to the verso, Stockholm, 30th May 1950, to Kenneth E. Crouch. Hedin informs his correspondent that all of the stamps from his expeditions to Asia have been handed to his friend Colonel Hans Lagerloef and further provides the address of Erni Kehr in New York who 'is entirely familiar with my deals with Col. Lagerloef', further remarking 'If you write to Erni Kehr the matter may easily be arranged according to your wish'. One very slight, minor corner crease, otherwise VG Hans Lagerloef (1880-1952) Swedish philatelist who amassed one of the world's largest stamp collections. Hedin collaborated with Lagerloef to produce a set of postage stamps relating to the Sino-Swedish Expedition of 1927-35 which were intended to finance the expedition and its report.
FOUCHÉ JOSEPH: (1759-1820) Convention Deputy and Minister of Police. Multiple signed D.S., Fouché, two pages, 4to, Chaumont & Paris, 15th May and 3rd October 1799, to Nicolas Brugnon & Marie Saunois, on the Haute-Marne administration department printed stationery, in French. The partially printed document being a certificate issued by Haute-Marne department as requested by Brugnon & Saunois, stating that they have never been included in the emigrants list in order to `..grant an inheritance at the Saint-Domingue island..´ Signed by Fouché to the second page, in his capacity as Minister of the Police. Also signed to the second page by Pierre-Laurent Forfait (1752-1807) Navy Minister under Consulate. Signed Forfait in his capacity as Navy and colonies Minister. Countersigned by several administrators of the Haute-Marne department. The document bears a red ink stamp of the Police Ministry alongside Fouché´s signature, as well as a Navy ministry ink stamp, and a vignette of the Haute-Marne department at the heading.
